For my Independent novel study project, I chose to do a book cover on The Chrysalids. The cover of a book cannot target a specific audience; however, I constructed mine to target people in the age group 12-18. I chose that specific group because the main character, David, is in that group when the story is being told; thus, the audience can relate to the characters at personal level.
My visual is very obvious to deconstruct. In the bottom half of the foreground, there is a church, a mountain range, several farms, and a buggy pulled by the great horses mentioned in the book. In the top half of the foreground, there are several buildings, a billboard, an airplane, and a giant helicopter-like device. There is also a boy, whom I drew to represent David. The boy has a blindfold on his neck that he had pulled down. This action symbolizes David being showed that True Image comes in many forms, including deviations, and nobody know if there really IS a True Image. This image, and the detail that goes into it in the Torah’s description, loom large in the Jewish imagination, and our conceptualization of our community. As the Israelites move forward into the desert, surely they can rally behind this glorious homage to God’s greatness – surely they will be proud to march to the Promised Land behind this banner for holiness, the ultimate reminder of God’s presence. And within the Ark, the tablets themselves, perhaps the broken first set alongside the second set that Moses carved himself. What could be more powerful?
Just because people within a family are blood related and living together, it does not mean they are identical in their beliefs and actions. In some cases the generations of people in the family have the same way looking at things and understand the same sets of rules and believe in same kind of moral behavior. Unlike that, in the novel, “The Chrysalids”, the protagonist, David Strorm and his father, Joseph, the antagonist have very different characters and conflicting points of view.
Imagery: The novel gives the world a rotting smell in the first page by having Winston go home to smell old rag mats which shows the world we are going to see is exactly a rose patch. Also the most powerful imagery is the poster of Big Brother who watches over all as we can see in the line “the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.” The imagery in this line
The symbols and images reinforce each other because they create a dark image of the future in the minds of the audience, and also present familiar religious signs like fire in Hell. What makes the imagery so effective in the essay is that it resonates with the audience because of the religious connections that Edwards
Within every story of tragic events there is always a visible spark of hope. The novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is a story of great despair and tragedy yet with hope prominently noticeable. The protagonist, David as well as his companions face various challenges, which result in double edged swords exhibiting despair throughout; however, nearing the end the desperation breaks apart letting hope shine through.
Throughout the story, Walker uses brilliant imagery in describing each detail of what the mother sees through the eyes of her world. This imagery in turn creates a more interesting and imaginative story, and allows the reader to experience what the narrator is experiencing. The theme of imagery is not within the story, but how the story is told. However, the theme of love of one's family heritage is within the heart and not on the wall.
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
A society is an organized group of individuals. In the novel, The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham the Sealand society and Waknuk society are both similar and different in the way they live. The Sealand and Waknuk societies are both egocentric and ignorant, but the Sealand society accepts changes, where the Waknuk society does not accept change and would rather stay the same.
1. The Yellow Wallpaper: The wallpaper is, as the title suggests, the chief symbol in this story. What does it symbolize, and how does it work as a symbol? What details about the wallpaper seem significant? How does the narrator 's attitude toward and vision of the wallpaper change, and what is the significance of those changes?

In John Wyndham's The Chrysalids, the repercussions of the static community of Waknuk and the community that the Zealanders built, that is willing to change, are derived from the influence of the Old People. After the tribulations, the people of Waknuk did not accept change they felt as though the Old People's ways were best. Their goal was to reach the same standard of civilization, but that was only achievable if they lived exactly how the Old People did. However the Zealanders believed that change was necessary in order to live life. This choice that both communities made affected their growth as a society. The Waknuk community remained static whereas the Zealanders advanced their society in respect to technology.
There are several elements in this painting which may be difficult to interpret but may have meaning, such as; the headdress on the ground, the horse on the flag, the two men in different style and colored clothing, the smoke that appears much darker, and the two men pointing away from the scene, the wind direction being portrayed differently.
The eagle is empowering as it stands on Prometheus who is lying on his back. Both characters are drawn diagonally on the canvas to give a dynamic quality of motion. The position of the eagle makes it appear that it is just about to fly away, with its wings spread wide open and its beak gripping hold of Prometheus’s liver while he lie there in agony. Chained to the rock by his wrist, Prometheus is lying on his back in a position with little to no power in his favor. With his body in bent away from the eagle, and kicking behind him, Prometheus is desperately trying to avoid the eagle’s sharp beak and talons. The definition in his muscles contributes to this agony as his powerfully built body structure is left helpless against the eagle as he pulls with all his might in hopes of breaking free from the chain. The usage of defined lines also influences the feeling of motion in the painting. The only objects to have defined lines are Prometheus and the eagle. The body of Prometheus and the wings of the eagle share sharp edges while the remainder of the paintings objects blends in one the background and one another. The backgrounds dull appearance lacks motion while Prometheus and the eagle’s sharp edges bring the objects to life and give them the appearance that they are truly fighting on the ground. The Garden of Eden presents itself as another symbolic location. The event that Emil told the story of stealing the apples from the garden was a very symbolic point of the novel in which Emil breaks away from his light realm. The garden that Emil stole the apples from represented the Garden of Eden and the apples, or forbidden fruit, symbolized Emil's first sin. This event foreshadows what is next to come in the conflict of good and evil. Emils first step out of the light realm gives way to more symbolic events where he becomes more submerged into the dark realm. At the beginning of the novel, Emil notices that there is a coat of arms above his house representing the Cain religion. The coat of arms contained a sparrow hawk bird on it. Hesse uses this symbolic approach to give the sparrow hawk purpose in the rest of the story, as a symbol of the mark of Cain. Emil discovered that the bird represents the god Abraxas. From this point, Emil is determined to find the meaning of the bird and Abraxas. After the rain washed away a painting of Beatrice that Emil painted, Emil could see Demian and himself in the canvas. Emil then painted a picture of the sparrow hawk on the same canvas. Hesse used this event to symbolize the connection between Emil, Demian, and Abraxas. After bringing these characters together as one, Hesse was able to conclude Emils transformation into the New World. Emil sees the bird again above the hallway of Frau Evas home.
