Tim Winton’s book ‘Blueback’ is about the relationship of a young Australian boy who has grown up in a small town and his connection to his natural environment, the land, the sea, and his best friend Blueback. The story is about the different experiences Abel faces growing up across periods of time and cleverly puts the reader into his life. Throughout the story, Abel’s character demonstrates the strong bond he has with his mother, his dream to understand the ocean and find its hidden secrets. Blueback is a novel that draws in the reader because of its relevant themes raised within the story such as the importance of environmental sustainability and taking care of the environment. He makes these characters seem very attached to the environment as in the book he says such things that give it that impression Dora and Abel live off the land in a sustainable way and make sure that they take care of the environment by only taking what they need. Dora and Abel give this impression from one of the following quote "The whole bay would stink for a week as they chopped the fish into the rich compost they made from tree bark, vegetables, scraps and sea grass." Costello, also known as “Reef Stripper” who replaces Mad Macca as the Abelone fisher, takes to more sea life and starts to strip the reef and is how he gets his name: reef stripper. Abel and Dora confront Costello about how he is stripping Longboat Bay, they talk to Costello but it doesn't go to plan. But after a long debate amongst Dora and Costello, it finally ends as Dora says, “Co Costello's fine cost him his licence and puts him out of business”.Dora and Abel don't give up and continue to protect Longboat Bay and make Longboat Bay a sanctuary for all things.
