Imagine you’re about to take a test that will determine if you pass or fail a class. How do you feel? This feeling is called anxiety. Now, imagine having this feeling all the time, even when you don’t know why. This is an anxiety disorder. I have suffered on and off from an anxiety disorder since I was 12 years old. It started when my younger sister was a little girl in second grade. Her and her friends had just heard of a scary story about "Bloody Mary." The story about "Bloody Mary" was that a little girl and her mother went into the school bathroom and died. The legend was that if you said "Bloody Mary" three times in the mirror, a ghost would come and kill you. So, being the little kids they were, they decided to try it. When they did try it, my little sister and one of her friends hid in the stall while another chanted "Bloody Mary, bloody Mary, bloody Marry". While they were in the stall, my little sisters' friend took a led pencil and wrote on the wall "I'll kill you! -Bloody Mary." …show more content…
She decided that a reasonable punishment would be to suspend my little sister for 3 days, then put on their permanent record that she was a terrorist and a vandalistic threat. This, to my parents, was unacceptable. They tried to reason with the counselor to not put it on her permanent record, but she would not even consider it. So, they took me and her both out of the school and threw us into another. This was really upsetting to me as a shy 12-year-old
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. 2. A time that I was punished harshly was when I wasn't getting my priorities straight. I sat down with my dad and we had a talk about if what I was doing was benefitting me for the long run. I was working every single day after school because I need to get paid to pay for my monthly truck fee. I have two jobs, one is working for Marylyn Johnson and the other is working at the Ackley Vet Center. I would work at Marylyn's three times a week and the vet three times a week. That would leave me Sunday to work with my cows. I also didn't leave that much time in my schedule to do my housework. I didn't think it was a big deal because I didn't have any shows coming up for awhile. However, it was a big deal for my parents. They yelled at me and told me I coudn't leave the house for the whole weekend. I also had to start doing my own laundry. I didn't understand my punishment because it's not like I was hanging out with friends
I was a typical 6th grader with a love for social time and hatred towards pointless homework. As I was tapping my foot on my creaking wooden desk with my book opened pretending to read, Mr. Daniels was watching over me like a bird that just gave birth to chicken eggs. I had a feeling she was going to ask me a question about what I was reading. I realized from that point on to always trust my instincts. Mrs. Daniels tall toothpick shaped body leaned over and asked me to summarize the first chapter in front of the whole class. Due to not even beginning to read the first page I told her I did not even know where to begin. Since I was not prepared for class, not participating, and being rude about my task at hand I received a punishment. My punishment was every week I had to write a summary in my own words about the chapter I had read. My eyes rolled in the back of my head so far I didn't know if they would ever go back to normal. Bloody Mary I remember enacting an urban ritual with my friends back in middle school. Giggling and squealing, running in and out of the bathroom, not really believing but still terrified by the possibilities. It was less a story with a moral than it was just a sleepover prank. Needless to say I wasn’t surprised that when I asked a roommate to relate an urban legend to me over lunch one day that she chose that of “Bloody Mary. Do you know what it feels like to have your palms sweat, throat close up, and your fingers tremble? This is the everyday life of someone who lives with anxiety. As soon as I wake up in the morning, I hear my brain freaking out about the day ahead of me. What do I eat for breakfast? What do I do first when I get home from school? What happens if I get in a car crash on my way to school? A million thoughts at one time racing through my head. I never have the time to process all of them. Most mornings, I lay in my bed and have to take a few deep breaths to begin my hectic but not so hectic day. That’s just the beginning. It’s safe to say that I feel that I 'm an anxious person and that I have an anxiety disorder.
Most students experience some degree of test anxiety. Test anxiety refers to a combination of physiological, emotional, and psychological components that are caused by the stress of taking exams. This may interfere with one's ability to think, reason, and plan. For some students, test anxiety is an unpleasant experience but doesn't necessarily interfere with exam performance. For other students, however, test anxiety is not only an unpleasant experience but also seriously interferes with exam performance.
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Every person experiences some form of anxiety in his or her lifetime. Anxiety helps us deal with tense situations like using our flight or fight reaction, study harder for an exam, or keep focus on important deadlines. Anxiety can be useful until it gets to the point of interfering with everyday life. Some people explain it as not being able to shut the anxiety off. When anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it becomes a disabling disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). Each year, anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). There are five major Anxiety Disorders they include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobias.
Anxiety disorders are genuine mental illnesses, and should be treated as such. Modern society doesn’t comprehend them as significant matters, and doesn’t understand how horrifying it can be to have this condition. A lot of people don’t fully grasp the severity of having this disorder, and thus are not sure how to help someone who is suffering with it. I was officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder during my last year of high school. I was struggling to graduate because my nerves were taking advantage of me getting an education. I would stress out about minimal issues and would purposely skip school to avoid my negative feelings. I always thought I was simply too shy for my own good and overanalyzed everything, but I realized it is more complex than that once it was affecting my schoolwork. My family didn’t believe anything was wrong with me, so it took a long time for me to receive any sort of treatment that would benefit me in the slightest. I was on medication for it until I could no longer afford it. Now my only option is to deal with it to the best of my abilities while having assistance from my family. Test anxiety can be caused by timed tests and the fear of not finishing the test, even if one can do all the problems. Any of the above reasons along with unpreparedness can be a contributing or a starting factor to one developing test anxiety. Manifestation Test anxiety can manifest itself in different ways; physical, emotional, mental, and/or behavioral. My personal experience with test anxiety is physical, I start to sweat profusely and an increased heartrate, upset stomach, and sometimes shortness of breath occurs followed by the mental psych out.
I was very isolated as kid when it came to talking with people. At a young age, I started to feel anxiety attacks when I would always get dropped off at school or even at stores. I didn't know how to handle my anxiety attacks mostly because I did not know what they were and I didn’t know how to cope with an anxiety attack. I had no idea that I was suffering from anxiety until I was in the 8th grade. In my 8th grade my anxiety had grown on me worse and worse by the time it went by.
I believe that everyone in school deals with different levels of test anxiety. It doesn’t matter the age or grade level, taking a test is nerve wrecking. “Test anxiety is a combination of physiological, emotional, and cognitive components that are caused by stress of taking exams and may interfere with one’s concentration, planning, and academic performance” (Plotnik, 2014). In Module 1 I learned that there are two different types of students that deal with test anxiety in different ways. The first student lets the stress of the test interfere with the performance of the exam.
