Slavery is a state of being a slave; a condition compared to that of a slave in respect of exhausting labor or restricted freedom (Google). Slavery is being forced against your will to do forced labor for little or no cost at all. “The true slave is not a person who has been shocked, beaten, tortured, and made to comply under the threat of death (Paul Liberty Forum).” One would say this is false and say that is what a true slave is, but what is the true definition of slavery? Some people believe it is simply just forced labor. The examination of the history of slavery and the impact it has had on African societies and culture, millions of Diamonds were traded for millions of lives each year, is explained extensively in this paper and in many different pieces of literature.
There are many different types of diamonds that vary in value. Koh-I-Noor is one of the most expensive diamonds and the Cullian is another that can be bought at the price of 400 million (3,106.75 carats) and it is one of the largest diamonds found. Diamonds represent wealth, love, and elegance, while the history behind them is brutal, awful, sickening, and bloody. Millions of diamonds came out of areas that have been mining for 50-60 years. The slaves that participate in the mining process are poor; some slaves get paid a share of what they did, others work simply for food, and some work under false hopes of one day catching the big one. They were known as the “Casino economy” because sometimes they found diamonds and other times they went home empty handed (Africa’s Diamond Trade). Blood diamond workers were forced by rebel groups to dig for diamonds in the mines in horrible condition. These blood diamonds fueled Africa’s economy and warfare in war areas. Many people died a blood diamond slave because the only way out was death or escape. Because of Blood Diamond slavery, many groups started to form to stop it; still today, there are groups because it is a modern day slavery type. Conflict diamonds are still around, but they are not everywhere like they use to be. For each diamond found is another life taken.
