There may be natural unfair advantages in sports, but when taking performance-enhancing drugs, athletes gain an unfair advantage not needed in sports. PEDs create many advantages deemed unfair, one of which is endurance, achieved through blood doping. Rather than increasing their endurance through training and exercising, athletes turn to blood doping. Erythropoietin (EPO) is the most common form of blood doping. This steroid increases oxygen movement throughout the muscles to improve stamina and endurance. Blood doping boosts red blood cell numbers, which are used to transport oxygen to muscles from the lungs, and more oxygen in the blood will improve endurance (“NIDA Blog Team”). Blood doping has a huge impact on athletes and gives an unfair …show more content…
advantage, rather than improving their talent by themselves. Stimulants are used to improve endurance and stamina by increasing the heart rate and blood pressure (“Performance Enhancing Drugs”). Those who dope use PEDs to get better rather than putting in the work for themselves. Steroids have a gift when it pertains to increasing muscle. When doping, muscle is gained while also increasing leanness rather than doing the work clean, without drugs (“Performance Enhancing Drugs - Advantages”). Unclean athletes, those who use steroids, take shortcuts to skip all the work. These drugs also affect training, allowing users to make the most of the little time being put in.
Steroids allow training to be effective, taking the results away from an individual's own ability (“Performance Enhancing Drugs”). Athletes who do not use drugs earn so much more of their money since they have to work so much harder to stay on the same level as users. Drug users boost their performance in unfair ways through shortcuts that clean athletes have absolutely no way of competing with.
Performance-enhancing drugs are not allowed in sports, but if they were, many athletes would be pressured into doping. In sports, athletes would have the tough choice of taking PEDs or not competing. Athletes love to compete, but not all want to risk their lives in the process. If athletes become allowed to use drugs, the rest will have to decide between using drugs too, or dropping out of the sport because they will not be as effective as those who are on PEDs (“Does the Use...”). Drugs risk lives for every pill or shot, and not all athletes are for that. If any athletes decide to use PEDs, the rest will need to as well. Coaches have admitted that athletes need to dope to be highly competitive in all levels of sports (“Does the Use...”). Even coaches around the world have admitted that allowing drugs

would mean that the professionals would need to use drugs or get out of the game, no other option. If steroids were to become allowed, athletes would be extremely coerced by their desire and need to win. As reported by Sports Illustrated, "half of all recently surveyed Olympic athletes admitted that they would be willing to take a drug -- even if it would kill them eventually -- as long as it would let them win every event they entered five years in a row." This type of winning necessity leads to athletes feeling coerced into using banned substances just to stay with everyone else (“Does the Use...”). Athletes are obsessed with winning, which is not positive for sports. Coercion is definitely in sports where success can be measured in a fraction of an inch, a pound, or a second, and that miniscule portion is the difference between success and failure. And, for athletes, it is not just about winning and the success that comes with, but the players get employed to win, and that their future depends solely on just that, winning. Under these standards, the decision to or to not take PEDs is absolutely not an individual's choice (“Does the Use...”). Athletes get money for winning by those miniscule margins, so athletes would have to take drugs if they would want to get paid. If PEDs became legalized in professional sports, it would have a gigantic impact on high school and college athletes. A whopping 77 percent of males, when surveyed, said that if PEDs were allowed in sports, that it “puts pressure on young athletes to use drugs to get ahead” (“Do Teens...”). High schoolers and college students do not need more issues to worry about. Young professional athletes already have enough pressure to live up to their expectations or to make the doubters pay, they do not need drugs to add to all that pressure. On February 9, 2009, Alex Rodriguez gave a speech on performance-enhancing drugs, in which he stated, "When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me, and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day. And I wanted to prove to everyone that, you know, I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. And I did take a banned substance." (“Does the Use...”). Alex Rodriguez was pressured into doping and PEDs were not even allowed, so just imagine if drugs were made legal in sports. For drugs to become allowed in sports, many changes would need to be made, careers would be ruined, and money would be lost. Sports associations should not allow performance-enhancing drugs because of how it will affect the athletes and the public.
There are a multitude of long-term and short-term health effects, the athletes would all be negatively affecting others as role models, receive an unfair advantage that others could not compete with, and be coerced into using performance-enhancing drugs. PED use is becoming a huge issue in sports as more people are doping every year and ruining sports for the rest of the world. Performance-enhancing drugs may boost performance, but it comes at a cost, not only to athletes, but to friends, family, those who look up in need of a role model, and for the future of all
sports.
Many athletes use steroids to become stronger and improve their ability to play their sport. Certain players believe there is nothing wrong with using steroids. Athletes who excel greatly would normally be chosen to be in the Hall of Fame, but if using steroids, they should not be allowed. Steroids have many effects on people. Baseball players are big influences on children and teenagers, which could cause even more steroid use because of major league baseball players.
Most drugs can be put into one of the five categories of performance enhancing drugs. Anabolic Steroids are mainly strength builders. They can be available in forms that flush out of your system within a few hours. The most popular of these drugs is the synthetic testosterone. Most people have a one to one ratio of testosterone and epitosterone. Few people have elevated levels of three to one, while the Olympics allow up to a six to one ratio4. According to the Olympic Guidelines, you could take this drug up to the six to one ratio and still participate in the games with the contenders that don't take anabolic steroids. They can't really discourage this because this is still following the guidelines. Another category is EPO, which stands for Erythropoietin. Erythropoietin regulates red blood cell production. The red blood cells deliver the oxygen to the muscles and organs of the body. EPO is mostly used by the long distance runners because of its endurance enhancing qualities.
Steroids are ruining sports in the United States, and they are also going to ruin future athletes if the United States does not put a stop to it. Many young athletes in the United States are taking performance enhancing drugs because they see that professional athletes are doing it and getting results. These teenagers are using steroids because they want to look muscular and fit, but they are not aware of the negative effects steroids have on their bodies. Young athletes do not know that they are not only risking their careers but also their bodies. Steroids may make a person look muscular and fit, but at the same time, it is ruining their heart. Steroids also cause people to act differently and do foolish things like using other drugs. Parents can prevent steroid use by teaching their children about it at a young age and staying involved in their children’s sport lives. Steroids have ruined professional careers. They ruined Lance Armstrong, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds’ careers and almost ruined Alex Rodriguez’s career. Professional athletes use steroids to improve their performance which is cheating. The game is not fair if someone is performing better by using drugs, and everybody should be performing with what they got. There are many different ways to achieve what they want in fair and healthier way. Many high school athletes are using steroids in the United States. They are not doing it under a doctor’s supervision; therefore, they are ruining their bodies without them knowing. Many of these athletes are looking at the outcome only and not what there are doing to their bodies in addition to getting stronger, muscular, and fit. All governing sport bodies in the United States need to take steroid testing seriously and give at...
Performance enhancing drugs affect so many people that don’t even realize it. Fans of the game, coaches, university leaders and of course athletes are the major groups of people that can be affected the most from the usage of performance enhancing drugs. Numerous studies have stated that an athletes drug use in sport could be credited to a complex interaction of personal and environmental factors (Judge). Athletes hold themselves to high standards for themselves or maybe even family members they must provide for. Athlete will do whatever it takes to strive in their sport because in most cases personal success can lead to better opportunities such as the National Football League or maybe even the National Basketball Association. Overall, individuals can be affected in a positive manner through the use of performance enhancing drugs. Furthermore, the use of performance enhancing can do nothing but help athletes. Also, some college athletes need performance enhancing drugs more than others. Not every athlete comes from a well provided family and knowing that can plaque athletes to where they’ll do whatever it takes to be successful. With this in mind it would totally be unfair if only one or a couple of athlete used enhancing drugs however if every athlete were granted the right to use performance enhancing drugs there
The role of PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) in world of sports has been the center of much controversy and debate dating back to the beginning of the Olympics, that has captured a considerable amount of attention within the past century. The revelation of PED use by star athletes has been a repeating occurrence in the world of professional sports. These allegations quickly turn legacies into scandals, for what one person once stood for throughout their career is now quickly overshadowed by the insert of a needle. The question then is, what if they were made legal? what would the reaction be and how would it change each respective league if PEDs were now allowed on the playing field? The use of these supplements has found its place in sports in a very timely and real matter, with many in opposition towards the use because of the growing concerns surrounding them, health and morally. In a closer examination of the purpose of professional sports, it is clear that the use of PEDs only bolster its purpose: allowing professional athletes to push to reach the peak of human perfection resulting in increased performance and success in sports from an entertainment perspective.
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite, and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids, one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced.
Imagine a world of sports without the worry of steroids. Now picture one where everyone is on them. Which is the better way? Thousands of years ago Olympic athletes saw the greatest achievement was simply taking part in such a special event. A lot of people argue that the use of steroids is sports is cheating. It is giving an unfair advantage to athletes over those who aren't using. But a counter argument says that a wealthy athlete has an advantage anyway. These individuals have the ability to buy the best trainers and virtually have no worries. This can be considered an unfair advantage but is still allowed by all perfesional sports. For good or for bad what is steriods doing to our world class athletes and entertainment around the world?
Not drug testing student athletes will affect the relationships that the student athlete has with others. The team that the athlete is on will be one of the largest groups of relationships that will be affected. Being on a team is like a family and a family requires teamwork. Family and teamwork requires every member to work together and get along. Younger athletes on the team look up to the older members of the team or the captains. “Many of these younger students revere the senior football player or want to be like that star sophomore on the soccer field,” (More Schools Should Drug-test Athletes). If these athletes are setting the example by doing drugs and playing sports, then the younger players will most likely pursue in their role models footsteps. Likewise, taking drugs during the season is prohibited, so if someone on the team is using drugs they will probably not advise the coach or other team members. This will lead to lying to others. and then later hurting the team. Fights and distrust among team member...
Drugs bring out the flaws in people. The worst decisions can ruin a life. Everyday drug users had the potential to become more. Sports increase the need for faster players allowing more opportunities in the drug world. Usage of steroids is a sickness and not acceptable on or off the field. By cheating your way to the top you crush people who equally worked hard as well. Athletes should be tested to prevent the unfair circumstances many find themselves in. Players should not be permitted to take any illegal drugs that could improve their status on the team. Sports is being born with drive and talent not taking a pill to make you unnaturally a great athlete.
In today’s age, performance enhancing drugs have become more advanced than just some special herbs and spices. Scientists today have found ways to manipulate elements to help provide muscle mass and stamina. Some types of performance enhancing drugs are human growth hormones (HGH), testosterone boosters, anabolic steroids etc. When taking HGH, a person might experience results such as an increase in muscle mass, an increase in bone density, and a reduced fat content in the body (Freudenrich). The same results could be found when you take anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids have been sought after to athletes and bodybuilders because they increase the size and strength of muscles. They also increase aggressiveness and competitiveness, which can be desirable traits in sports (Helmenstine). On different occasions such as a cyclist or a long distance runner, these athletes will store some of their red blood cells when their hemoglobin is high. The athlete will then train and work as usual, but right before the athlete competes they will transfuse the blood they took out back into their body therefore creating more red blood cells to ...
The use of performance enhancing drugs can lead to great health issues, can provide unfair advantages to those who are in the right and not doping up, and can cause the spirit of the sport to be violated and the loss of an athlete’s integrity. Though one could argue against each of these three criteria and have a valid argument, I believe that the dangers to an athletes health are reason enough for the ban on performance enhancing drugs to continue. Using these drugs can have extreme effects on bodily organs and the quality of life an athlete will lead after their use. The dangers that using a performance enhancing drug could bring to one’s health is not the only issue, causing the spirit of the sport to be violated is also an important reason. Many people look up to athletes or love a sport, but their support for the athlete as well as their support for that particular sporting event is in danger when an illegal act is committed within that
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.
...t these drugs are catastrophic and cause so many diseases and sicknesses that should not happen to an athlete. Athletes will be looked at as superheroes and children would not want to idolize a player that got to where he is because he did drugs. A child wants to look up to a player that beat the odds and worked harder than everyone else. If Performance Enhancing Drugs were legalized and allowed in all professional sports, there would be a lot of deaths, and player that have diseases caused by the drugs they took. Also High school and college players would begin to take it because they would feel like that is the only way to get to the pros. And lastly players would hurt themselves and their teammates and fellow players. PED’s have a lot of potential but not yet. There are too many health defects and we do not want our “heroes” to die from a disease caused by drugs.
Doping is a practice that has been going on since the time of "ancient Greek athletes, who supposedly ate herbs, sesame seeds, dried figs, and mushrooms for this purpose" (Hoberman, 1992, 104). Likewise, athletes have readily consumed such drugs as caffeine and alcohol to improve performa...
Overall it is clear that the need to use performance enhancing drugs is outweighed by the consequences and issues caused by performance enhancing drugs. Sporting events such as the world cup, the Olympics or the World Series make young children feel inspired and encouraged about what they could achieve through dedication and hard work. I feel it is important for the sporting industry as well as the athletes to return respectability to the sport. By
