Is cable still a preferred source of entertainment, or is cable being overran by online streaming websites, such as Netflix? Cable has been competing with new ways of television watching, such as Dish or DIRECTV, causing cable to not be the preferred source of television. Over the past several years a new way of watching movies and television on demand has been introduced to the consumer: Netflix. Netflix is a online streaming network that allows the consumer to watch television shows and movies that are no longer available to watch on cable. Since the consumer is becoming more and more dependent on getting their entertainment on demand, Netflix has become one of the main sources for getting that entertainment. In the more recent years, however, Netflix has begun to overrun the media industry. “In 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and recently announced plans to close its remaining U.S. stores.” (TECHCRUNCH) This took place shortly after the big interest in Netflix. While Blockbuster was a way for families to go and get a movie on a Friday night, Netflix has made getting a movie much more convenient. Since Netflix is a very consumer personal website, it is more applicable to the consumer because their personal needs are more easily met using Netflix than using Blockbuster. Families can now log onto their computer or Apple TV and have thousands of movies right at their fingertips. Along with being an easier accessible route for the consumer, Netflix is also more personal than a store full of movies geared towards everyone. “It makes much more sense to think about it as an un-ordered collection of titles you want to see, where Netflix can apply the personalization, the recommendations algorithms that we spent a lot of time and effort [developing] to pick out from the un-ordered list the set of titles that would be interesting.
