Blind In The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and was published in 1925. The book is placed in 1920s, New York. The story is about Nick Caraway and how he met the millionaire, Jay Gatsby. According to Samuels, ”The book's chief characters are blind, and they behave blindly.” It is evident that Samuel is correct in his assertion because Gatsby, Nick, and Wilson are all blind in their own ways.

Jay Gatsby behaves blindly in the book the Great Gatsby written by F Scott Fitzgerald because he thinks Daisy never loved Tom and that he could be in the same social level as Tom. One reason why jay gatsby was blind is because jay left daisy for along time- and daisy thought Gatsby was dead so she fell in love with another man. Gastby responds to nick by saying “I don’t think she ever loved him.” Gatsby turned around from a window and looked at me challengingly. “You must remember, old sport, she was very excited this afternoon. He told

her those things in a way that frightened her” (116,117). This explains that gatsby really is blind to the fact that Daisy found someone knew and fell in love with them. He thought all along that she would always love him even when she thought he was dead. The last reason why gatsby is blind is because he had false hope in the green light and what it stands for. Gatsby believe in the light so much that he tells nick what it means to him nick says “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… . And one fine morning ——
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back cease- lessly into the past” (138). This explains that he blindly believed that Daisy would want a future with him but in reality she never would.
Wilson was blind in the book the great gatsby by f scott Fitzgerald because he thinks that his wife loves him.

One reason why his wife doesn’t love him is because she cheats on him with Tom. Wilson doesn’t know anything about it tom says “Wilson? He thinks she goes to see her sister in New York. He’s so dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive” (22). This explains that Wilson is blind to the fact that tom is sleeping with his wife and that his wife is not happy with him. Wilson was also blind by thinking that his wife actually loves him. Wilson’s wife does not love him because she loves money and that’s why she is cheating on him with tom. Wilson wife thought he was someone else when she married him she even says “I married him because I thought he was a gentleman,” she said finally. “I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe” (29). this explains that all Myrtle cared about was money, she had believed that Wilson was rich but when she found out that he was not, she thought he was useless. She never loved

him.
Nick is blind in the book the great gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald because he doesn’t see the worst in gatsby because of nicks father. When nick was younger his father said “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the ad- vantages that you’ve had” (1). this explained that nick was blind because he only wanted to see the good in gatsby and nothing else. He couldn’t see how obsessed he was and his job which was illegal. Nick was also blind because he couldn’t realize that money was everything. Tom and daisy didn’t care about gatsby or his well being, Daisy never loved him she loved his money and in the end nick said They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made… .(137). this explains that tom and daisy were actually bad people and nick couldn’t see that. He was blind because he didn’t realize that people were just using gatsby. In conclusion Samuel was correct in saying that The book's chief characters are blind, and they behave blindly.”
All in all, in the book the great gatsby written by f scott Fitzgerald the characters behave blindly. Gatsby blindly believed that Daisy did not love Tom but she did. Nick Carraway blindly trusts Gatsby and sees only the best in him. Wilson was blind to the fact that his wife, Myrtle, did not love him back.
