What is a community? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, its "A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common." Now it is safe to say a Catholic school would be a community because we all live relatively close to each other, but a Catholic school is more than that. The particular characteristic we all share in our school isn't just being Catholic, its how we live out being a Catholic community through different ways. Our school community at Blessed Trinity demonstrates all three components to this year's prompt: faith, knowledge, and service.
Blessed Trinity Catholic School is an environment where we are free to practice, celebrate, and learn about our faith. As a whole student body, we celebrate Mass together on Wednesdays. The older and younger children are assigned a prayer partner for these Mass days. Students are strongly encouraged to challenge and fully apply themselves while learning. As a student body, we strive for greatness together. Even if academics isn't a student's specialty, there are many other ways we gain knowledge at Blessed Trinity. Because we are a Leader in Me school, constant reminders and guides about the 7 habits of highly effective people are posted around campus and are integrated into lessons. Whether academic or not, almost every person can sometimes not understand things. Students are always encouraged to ask questions and ask for help, and answers or assistance are provided through different ways. We have programs such as Title One, which is a group getting together for help on a subject, that are always happening. At Blessed Trinity, I have been taught that knowledge can not be possible without help, which is presented to us in many
Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
As I walked up the street toward the front of Grace Cathedral, I was in awe at the size and ornateness of this cathedral. It was tall and wide and looked very much like the churches we had been studying in class in the prior weeks. As I got closer and closer I began to make out The Ghiberti Doors, also known as the gates of paradise. These are the main cathedral doors made out of bronze, and are replicas of the originals which stood centuries ago at the east entrance to the Baptistry of Florence Cathedral (the Duomo) Italy. I approached and spent about fifteen minutes, just examining all the different engraved scenes within the ten sections in the two doors. After I had finished looking at the Ghiberti Doors, I entered through one of the side doors, since you are not able to use the Ghiberti Doors, because they weight too much. Before I stepped inside the cathedral, I pulled out my text analysis and read over it, so that when I entered I could examine whether or not this cathedral exuded the same sacredness as the cathedral in the text analysis. I feel this Cathedral really does exude not entirely the purity of heaven, but does seem to somewhat separate you from the outer world, as Abbot Suger spoke of. Also, it brings in some of the surrounding beauty from St. Denis, such as the sapphire and stained glass, as well as the gold plating.
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. Due to the many meanings of the word community, people have learned to substitute community for other words. Most of the definitions are common has in a society linked by common interests but, would you really say a buffalo community? Of course not, you would say a herd of buffalo. Unfortunately, community is really only used if someone were to be talking about where people live. Even the meanings of community don’t announce themselves when people use the word. A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. We have a responsibility to cultivate a sense of community and belonging. The quote, “It takes a village to raise a child”, rings true in so many ways. Education is a collaborative effort that needs leadership and a strong vision. Co-operation among all stakeholders is essential. A community is an essential extension of a school. Relationships between a school and its’ community, whether educational, entrepreneurial, co-operative or charitable, should not just be encouraged but pursued.
