Brief Summary “My first victim was a woman-” (134) He immediately starts off describing his first encounter of racism when he moves to Chicago as a student. He encounters countless other examples of how he was discriminated just because of the color of his skin. “It was the echo of that terrified woman’s shoes that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I had come into.”(135) He described himself as the opposite of a criminal and was embarrassed because the people’s looks and reactions towards him almost made him feel guilty …show more content…

Some things that he had to encounter was when people would walk on the other side of the street to avoid him. He also noticed that people would walk faster to try to keep distance or if he was too close they would clutch their handbags or purses as if he was going to snatch it from them. This began to anger him until he learned how to adjust.
“Over the years, I learned to smother the rage I felt at so often being taken as a criminal.”(136) He began to change his own ways as to reduce the stress or the fright of the people around him. He began to dress a little differently. If he continued his daily route following someone who seemed nervous in front of him he would walk into some lobby or place and wait a while then continue on his way so that the person wouldn’t think he was following them. He needs to realize that those people were simply doing what they were taught to do to protect themselves. It is very sad, but crime is very high especially in major cities of America. As a girl my mother has given me many ideas and things to do just in case something bad was going to happen. It is called being proactive. Trying to get ahead to prevent a problem instead of dealing with the aftermath. I can not speak for all women, however many do not act a certain way as to be prepared to protect ourselves because of a person’s skin color, it is because of the fact that that person is more than likely a man. A man who could overpower us. If a man is walking too closely I am going to get away. It is a natural reaction. I’m sure he was not taught such things simply because he is a male and would be threatened
