Black Lives Matter The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) is an international activist movement, originating in the African American community, that campaigns against violence toward black people. Violence towards black people has become more of a problem in recent years with multiple police shootings, such as Trayvon Martin in Florida or Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The protesting has caused many people to join the cause and fight for what the average American thinks as a set of born rights; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So in today’s world, do black people have those same rights? The movement started after 17 year old Trayvon Martin was killed and his murderer, George Zimmerman, was charged with second degree murder. They have been trained to respond to all sorts of problems and act accordingly, the cops are responding in the way that they were trained to. Cops are trained to act rationally and not in the moment, they should act by reflex from all the training that they want through. Although, it is statistically impossible to have every single law enforcement agency to employ a police force that is 100% capable and 0% corrupt, therefore bad cops must exist. Unfortunately, those bad cops have chosen the worst time to make a bad decision and instead of trying to calm a situation down they escalate it. This takes the encounter to a whole new level, possibly statewide or national. Once that happens it’s hard to take it back, the damage has already been done. During this movement, many lives have been lost and some of those have been men or women in blue. The only thing that makes the police really mad is the death of a fellow police member. This causes a downward spiral of violence because then it seems to the black First they were slaves of our Founding Fathers and now they are creators of evil and destruction in our very own country. Today they are a source of entertainment, we have them entertaining us on TV, playing sports like football, basketball, and baseball. We criticize them for their play style and terrible plays, when we all know that we could have done far better since we have the superior white skin color. But most of us don 't want to play sports, it’s too hard and not worthy of all the work that goes in. We only want to participate in the important part, the games. Every Sunday and Monday night during football season, we superior white people gather around our all powerful 60” TVs and watch the black people bash their heads into each other. We care so much about the game and what it gets for us, that we don 't care about the hardships that the players go through to be able to provide that entertainment for us. It is all about the entertainment that the black players give

This famous quote was said by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the most famous black basketball players, symbolized what many black athletes were pursuing when they first got into sports. In today’s world not only are black athletes a part of our sports venue, they are dominating the landscape of some sports such as the NBA which consists of a whopping 80% black athletes. Black athletes continue to revitalize sports in America as some athletes became the face of their sports such as Muhammad Ali in boxing, Jackie Robinson in baseball and Michael Jordan in basketball. Sports came as a form of entertainment for many Americans, but for black athletes it came as a pathway to express who they were and what they believed in. The more they became involved in sports, the more media they were able to attract which enabled them to talk about topics other than sports such as racism, their religions and equality through the civil rights movement. These views and statements made in their interviews and press conferences were the ones that became publicized and more popular amongst the typical white men in America and it played a huge role in changing the way blacks were viewed in American society.

Many Americans have seen or at least heard of the movie “Remember the Titans.” The classic film focuses on a school that is blending black and whites and taking on an African American head coach. The coach knows the importance of winning, but also knows the team must work together to get those wins and have respect for every single person in the locker room. Although coach Boone was still put in a tough situation with the school board and the community, he was able to lead his team, with the help of a white assistant coach, to an undefeated season. Front page news it seems almost weekly. All the shootings go one of two ways. Either a Police Officer has been shot or a Police Officer has shot a citizen, but either way the final result is death. Whether an Officer has been shot or an Officer has shot someone these cases seem to be related to one thing, fear. People in today’s society feel as though they can’t trust Police Officers as they are there to hurt and kill them. Racism in politics seems to be a primary topic that has grabbed the attention of the public due to the fact of people waking up and noticing the problem. Originally after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, in 1870 the first black U.S. senators were elected to office. Then after those few senators, there was a long time where none were elected. Racism still has not disappeared, even after multiple attempts to stop it. In politics today, lawmakers consider many movements such as “Black Lives Matter” and even consider these movements in the presidential candidate debates. Needless to say, this conversation would be nonexistent if racism was not in politics.

Since the colonization of what was to become the United States of America, the injustice of racial prejudice has been a prominent characteristic of this country. As a result, Blacks and other Americans of color are often, if not always, victims of racial profiling and despite many efforts to achieve racial equality, prejudiced mindsets have remained with some people well into the 21st century. Consequently, this has prompted many Blacks to go to questionably extreme measure to protect their children from potentially becoming another casualty of racial discrimination. Many have chosen to just ignore the problem, however the reluctance to speak out against racial injustices only shows weakness among Blacks and other Americans of color.
Such a simple but revealing quote captures the essence of a new form of racism that has evolved in America. Appalling cases of overt racism still manifest themselves, but the racism of today has become considerably more subtle than in the past. This subtlety is likely the cause of America’s disillusioned attitude towards racism. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The absence of brutality and unregenerate evil is not the presence of justice.” Many have falsely assumed that with the eradication of explicit segregation laws, the problems of race and more importantly racism had been solved. The racism of today might not be as embedded within the law, but the racism of today quietly, yet undeniably, benefits and privileges certain groups over others. I would challenge society to reconsider its definition of racism, and use that new understanding to help make for a better tomorrow. The first step is for society to concede that America has produced a systemized hierarchy, one that has become known as white privilege.
Historical and sociological research has shown, through much evidence collection and analysis of primary documents that the American sporting industry can give an accurate reflection, to a certain extent, of racial struggles and discrimination into the larger context of American society. To understand this stance, a deep look into aspects of sport beyond simply playing the game must be a primary focus. Since the integration of baseball, followed shortly after by American football, why are the numbers of African American owners, coaches and managers so very low? Throughout each person’s lives they often hear statements such as these. Women are supposed to act a certain way, men are supposed to be the strong ones, different races are assumed to be of a lesser class. Who really set these standards for everyone? Is this really a way the world should view each other? Stereotypes and racism have always been an underlying issue throughout many years. Police brutality is one of the most serious human rights violations in the United States and it occurs everywhere. The reason why I chose this topic is because police brutality happens all the time in the United States and still remains unrecognized by many. Additionally, the public should be knowledgeable about this topic because of how serious this crime can be and the serious outcomes that police brutality can have on other police officers and the public. The job of police officers is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crimes. They are involved in very dangerous and stressful occupations that can involve violent situations that must be stopped and controlled by any means. In many confrontations with people, police may find it necessary to use excessive force to take control of a certain situation. Sometimes this makes an officer fight with a suspect who resists being arrested. Not all cops in communities are great cops. At least once a year, the news covers a story about a person being beat by an officer. The article “Minority Threat and Police Brutality: Determinants of Civil Rights Criminal Complaints in U.S. Municipalities” by Malcolm D. Holmes from the University of Wyoming, uses the conflict theory to explain why officers go after minorities sometimes causing police brutality. It explains the police’s tension with African American and Latino males. Those minorities are the ones that retaliate more against police officers which causes the officer to use violent force to defend themselves.
Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system. Protests around the world have taken place to fight for justice in the black community. The immense number of deaths of unarmed black men and women is a clear sign that they are more likely to be killed by police than white people. Physical violence and excessive use of force by the U.S. police towards African Americans are seen in the news regularly.
Part of human nature is judging something by what surrounds it even if it is another human. Think of a community that has every color, every race, every religion, and every kind of person that community however, doesn’t value each other to some point which causes a problem, a problem that we call racism in today’s era, a problem that needs to be eliminated because it allows a gap that shouldn’t exist in our society. The scholars expounds that Black athletes were commodities on the playing field to help win games and bring in revenue to their respected schools. However, the schools were just as eager and willing to leave their Black players behind and dishonoring the player as a part of the team. Therefore, not compromising the team’s winning and bring in profits for the school. Sadly, Black athletes at predominately White institutions (PWIs) who believed that they were bettering the live of themselves and their families members by going to college and playing collegiate sports to increase their post secondary careers. However, these athletes were only “show ponies” for their schools. Unfortunately, Black athletes had allegiance to their school; however, the school turned their backs on the athletes to protect the profit and notoriety of the school and the programs. Money and respect from White fans and spectators were more important to the PWIs than standing up for the respect of their Black players. Racial bigotry in sports was rampant and it was only going to get worse.
