Problem statement.
The underlying problem at the event that took place tagged Black Lives Matter at ETSU is one that is a result of societal influence that has helped fueled the animosity towards people of color.
The societal issue: It has been a global issue that people of color are seen as aliens and one cannot help but wonder who exactly will answer the question of who has the right to what. There have been various protests like this all over the world. Black lives matter is a peaceful movement of people who are not saying that only their lives matters, but also reminding a nation that it is still burdened by the memory of slavery, Jim Crow and the continuous reality of ever growing discrimination. Black men and women should be treated with equal dignity as an American life, law enforcement inclusive. This movement have seen a lot of horrors as there is white supremacy in America, this has every black person shrinking at the thought of meeting another person with white skin. Most cases of

This will foster oneness and helps in healing the world, if it starts with one, it can spread to the world. The university management should not wait until issues like the one that happened during the protest happened before reacting, proactive measures needed to be put in place to forestall future
Blacks were treated unjustly due to the Jim Crow laws and the racial stigmas embedded into American society. Under these laws, whites and colored people were “separate but equal,” however this could not be further from the truth. Due to the extreme racism in the United States during this time period, especially in the South, many blacks were dehumanized by whites to ensure that they remained inferior to them. As a result of their suffering from the prejudice society of America, there was a national outcry to better the lives of colored people.
The issues of how technology is influencing our nation today has come into play with social media and surveillance in our personal lives. We use twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to express our opinions on things and as a voice to inform people on what’s going on in today’s society. We have learned how to use the tools we’ve been given to change our lives forever; our government has access to all of our personal information in exchange for our protection against terrorism. In Bijan Stephen’s article on “Black Lives Matter” and Rebecca McKinnon’s chapter on “the Arab Spring”, they both touch on the power of technology in negative and positive ways.
The change in policies orient the Richmond Police force into a manner in which they are able to interact with individuals without being overtly and overly aggressive. Richmond officers are oriented to defuse high-tension situations and be reminded that the person they are dealing with are indeed human, a person like anyone else. One of the reasons why Richmond Police officers deal with situations with the least amount of force, is because of the new training regime that was that instated in 2008, according to Mercury News (2014), by Chief Magnus. Chief Magnus instated a very rigorous and diverse training segment based on solely dealing with the use of force at the training facilities and the streets of Richmond. Every utility a Richmond Officer
This movement is about the equality of African Americans and saying that their lives matter just as much as other races who get more rights and freedom. This movement has gone on since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. In society, African Americans are lesser than whites and are given less rights, but in the Black Lives Matter movement, not only African Americans, but also many other races are going against what society says and protesting for rights from which they deserve. This relates to the idea of going against society and making your own decisions which relates to Transcendentalism.
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
The identities have tended to be divided into some different categories, such as gender, race, and class, and these sources have been judged in the different ways. In other words, the different determinant factors of the individuality have been considered separately, and these components have been regarded as a unrelated simple category. Under these points of view, however, it is hard to recognize the problems of interrelated individual component of the identity. Thus, to solve the disregarding crossover point, the new theory of the “intersectionality” are essential. This essay explores the key definition of the “intersectionality” from the viewpoint of gender studies, and how the concept is connected with the social system and individual identity
Racism is still prevalent as it has been demonstrated by Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers being called a traitor and other derogatory names for protesting the national anthem by choosing to take a knee when it’s playing. Oftentimes, black bodies feel oppressed and often view themselves being targets of police brutality and injustice which are sensationalized by the social media and thus, they protest. A movement called Black Lives Matter has emerged and been brought to the attention of the whole world. People of color want the freedom to excel without oppressions let alone, to be treated equally based on personal merits regardless of the color of their skin. The majority of American realizes it, is very concerned about it, and wants to do something about it. As a member of this group, Rankine took action by delivering this
There are people in America that makes us wonder why there is a world to begin with. There are people who represent the greater good of the world, and there are others who are unfortunately not for the greater good of the world. We have to constantly deal with those whose only goal in life is to bring the lives of others down to the ground; to shatter and to break them. This is what is happening now in the world, and this most likely will never change. As a result of trying to change the ways in which we live and interact with these people, there was a movement that wanted to change the lives of African-Americans, as well as other races. This movement was called “Black Lives Matter”. The people who were responsible for the creation of
It was more of a problem during and after segregation, but is reportedly no longer present. This is important to me because I believe as humans, we are all equal no matter the race or ethnicity. (Citizens, 2010) Another step being made to bring awareness to the cause is that there are professional organizations. There are numerous organizations that focus on civil rights, but two that concentrate on racial rights and equality.
According to Oxford Dictionaries, race relations are "…Relations between members or communities of different races within one country" (Oxford Dictionaries, 2017). Race relations are based on differences an individual possesses (physical and genetic traits) in comparison to other people. The traits explained by G. Edwards "are important in contributing to the observed ecological, economic, social, and political which constitute the subject matter of race relations" (Edwards, 2008). Therefore, the way in which a person differs from a certain racial group will lead to the same differences in cultural characteristics. Additionally, many critics claim race relations have seen a positive shift since the end of WWII and brought about a change in the composition of racial minorities; members within a group who appear less powerful in comparison to a larger group
America has had a long history of crimes that occur in order to achieve this equality as expressed in this line “in general we have seen theft, injustice, lynchings, riot and murder based on “accusations” or attempts at “social equality” (Dubois). As Dubois has stated, the crimes that have been committed in attempt to create social equality, have only caused more problems by harming others. This expresses how socially unequal the colored people have it, since it creates a motive to do something in order to have their voices and opinions heard. Similar to the recent freeway protest in Sacramento, which was an attempt to create a social equality to prevent police brutality. Compared to the acts, laws, and policies that are going to be discussed later, this event specifically shows how African Americans are still striving for social equality in present day America. For example, in this text a member of the protests states “"This is an epic day for black Sacramento," Brrazey Liberty, a musician and Black Lives Matter activist told The Sacramento Bee. "We feel like we had a victory today. Today was ours." (Wamsley NPR). Based on this statement regarding the protest, It is clear that there are still goals set in place to create social equality, which means that there is still social inequality that exists
“Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement against police violence that is, as argued by BLM supporters, disproportionately and systematically directed at black people. The movement has highlighted incidents in which police have harassed and killed black men and women. BLM is considered one of the most visible and controversial civil rights movement of the last decades.” (Black Lives Matter. 2016) “Black Lives Matter is an American social activist organization devoted to stopping violence and injustice against African Americans. The group was founded in 2013 following the acquittal of In the sixties African Americans began a Civil Rights Movement that, to some, still continue today; hence, the Black Lives Matter movement. During the sixties, the
There are many problems in today’s world, one of which is the existence of racism. Obviously it has improved dramatically over time, however racism is still out there in our every day lives. The movement Black Lives Matter has spread nationwide attracting the attention of many different parties. Black Lives Matter has had a large impact on the whole country with many people taking different stances on it.
Overall, many believe that the undeviating war on racism in today’s society is fueled by police brutality and anti-police violence. Specifically, The Black Lives Matter movement which is the source of controversy regarding these topics. To summarize, this campaign is “both a hashtag and a political project that formed after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.” (Miller). Later in the article Chelsea Fuller, senior communication associate of The Advancement project which is a multi-racial civil rights organization, states “The Black Lives Matter movement is to deal with anti-black racism, to “push for black people’s right to live with dignity and respect” and be included in the American democracy that they helped create” (Miller). In discussions of The Black Lives Matter movement, a controversial
Even though we 're all equal in writing, there is still an unspoken social tension that says otherwise. In this year alone, the United States of America has been under a social stress. The deaths of two African-American males, Eric Garner and Michael Brown, at the hands of white cops ignited an activist movement called Black Lives Matter.
