Here at west we learn about the civil rights movement, and how African Americans gained equality in our freshman history class. And even though almost everyone knows February is Black history month, not many know how this custom started. Black History Month began in 1926. It was originally known as “Negro History Month”. It later grew to become National African American History Month. According to the website History, this tradition was started by Carter G. Woodson and the association for the study of negro life and history. Woodson was a noted African American historian, educator and publisher. They named the second week of February, 1926 as “Negro History Week”. Dr. Woodson chose February to honor the birthdays of former president Abraham
It is impossible for anyone to survive a horrible event in their life without a relationship to have to keep them alive. The connection and emotional bond between the person suffering and the other is sometimes all they need to survive. On the other hand, not having anyone to believe in can make death appear easier than life allowing the person to give up instead of fighting for survival. In The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, Aminata Diallo survives her course through slavery by remembering her family and the friends that she makes. Aminata is taught by her mother, Sira to deliver babies in the villages of her homeland. This skill proves to be very valuable to Aminata as it helps her deliver her friends babies and create a source of income. Aminata’s father taught Aminata to write small words in the dirt when she was small. Throughout the rest of the novel, Aminata carries this love for learning new things to the places that she travels and it inspires her to accept the opportunities given to her to learn how to write, read maps, and perform accounting duties. Early in the novel Aminata meets Chekura and they establish a strong relationship. Eventually they get married but they are separated numerous times after. Aminata continuously remembers and holds onto her times with Chekura amidst all of her troubles. CHILDREN. The only reason why Aminata Diallo does not die during her journey into and out of slavery is because she believes strongly in her parents, husband and children; therefore proving that people survive hardships only when they have relationships in which to believe.

African Americans who came to America to live the golden dream have been plagued with racism, discrimination and segregation throughout a long and complicated history of events that took place in the United States dating back to slavery to the civil rights movements. Today, African American history is celebrated annually in the United States during the month of February which is designated Black History Month. This paper will look back into history beginning in the late 1800’s through modern day America and describe specific events where African Americans have endured discrimination, segregation, racism and have progressively gained rights and freedoms by pushing civil rights movement across America.
Black History Month is an observance in the United States that is celebrated in the month of February to remember all of the important African Americans in history. This observance is still celebrated annually and brings forth a debatable question such as is there still a need to celebrate black history month? I strongly believe that Black History Month should still be celebrated for several reasons, one being that children need to know how African Americans contributed to society. Young African American children need to know their ethnic background. The legendary icons who fought for whom were considered “colored” people need to be acknowledged.
This is because the entire history of the black population is taught to the children in this month implying that all the achievements made by blacks are so little that they can be analyzed in a month. The other reason why the Black History Month shows racism is the idea that it was fixed in the shortest month of the year to further show how few the accomplishments made by blacks are. Since the accomplishments made by the blacks are only taught during this month, it shows that the teachers would not have to bother themselves with it any other time throughout the year making it significantly easy for the students to forget it as well as the accomplishments made by the black people. In addition, racism is also seen in this because there is no white history month. This can be used to show that the whites’ accomplishments are so many that they are celebrated all year round.
African American history plays a huge role in history today. From decades of research we can see the process that this culture went through and how they were depressed and deculturalized. In school, we take the time to learn about African American History but, we fail to see the aspects that African Americans had to overcome to be where they are today. We also fail to view life in their shoes and fundamentally understand the hardships and processes that they went through. African Americans were treated so terribly and poor in the last century and, they still are today. As a subordinate race to the American White race, African Americans were not treated equal, fair, human, or right under any circumstances. Being in the subordinate position African Americans are controlled by the higher white group in everything that they do.
The history of the United States has in it much separation or segregation due to race. For a long time our country has seen racism as a large problem and this has caused ethnic groups to be looked down upon and forced into a lifestyle of difficulties and suppression. Due to this, races, particularly African-Americans, have been forced to deal with unequal opportunity and poverty, leading to less honorable ways of getting by and also organizations that support change. Malcolm X is one strong example of an African American man who became apart of a group acted against it, uniting people to promote the advancement of colored people and change. Malcolm's thoughts towards race and civil right in the previous years were displayed in a less way to the people and "by any means necessary" perspective. After his pilgrimage in 1964 his view of civil rights had quickly changed into a more complete view of civil rights, and the peoples views towards him. No one really knows what kind of impact Malcolm X would have had on history if he had not been assassinated. His beliefs and philosophy did gain him a place in history as one of the best-known Black Nationalist Leaders. Everyone seems to have known who Malcolm X was, and he ranks high with all other Black leaders. His ideas were radical and he was very out spoken. He was a major force in the development of black history. He fought not only for his people but also for all oppressed people everywhere. He was well spoken and he laid the groundwork for the black power movement of the late l960's.

Malcolm X, born Malcom Little, was a human rights activists and American Muslim minister who was greatly revered for his preaching about black rights and criticism about the civil rights movement. Malcolm had very troubled beginnings with his mother’s descent into insanity following the tragic murder of his father by racists; as a result Malcolm was separated from his siblings and orphaned at a young age. Malcolm dropped out of school and eventually plunged head first into the life of a thug, participating in, dealing drugs, pimping, and robbery. In 1946 Malcolm returned to Boston and was arrested after committing multiple burglaries and was sentenced to serve an eight to ten year sentence at Charlestown State prison and Norfolk Prison Colony.

In nineteen seventy-six, America names February as black history month, as a commemoration of significant events and individuals of the African-American ancestry. Even though, black history month started as an innocent idea and if the American government would have rejected it, there would have been a colossal backlash across the black community. However, if one would take a step back and look at the big picture, one would notice that black history is American history, shows that not all ethnic groups is treated equally and brings a past time up that pours salt in old wounds. Black Marxism constitutes values that are directly in line with what African Americans and other progressive people of color require in the United States. The current capitalist society under Trump has systematically disadvantaged African Americans, immigrants, workers and the poor in the U.S.. People of color, workers, and immigrants have been seeking a system that does not contribute to the systematic racism, rising economic inequality, and the loss of beneficial public services; and Black Marxism is the ideology that can help build their ideal system. Donald Trump seeks to remove many public services such as housing assistance programs, affordable health care, and planned parenthood; while cutting minimum wage, and placing a ban on immigrants. Trump’s actions will likely affect every working class person within the U.S. border over the next four years. Black Marxism strives to created a united front that organizes people of
