Black Elk speaks is a biographical book written by John G, Neihardt. In this book Neihardt talks to a man names Black Elk about his life and his tribe, the Lakotas. Before Black Elk could tell his story he offers the sacred pipe and tells the story of how it was given to his people. The story goes on and Black Elk talks about how he was sick and had a vision while he was sick. In his vision he saw many things like 12 horses that transformed into other animals, singing birds and six grandfathers. The Grandfathers told showed him sacred songs and dances to help his people. After being cured of his sickness by Whirlwind Chaser, a medicine man in his village, Black Elk had weird feelings towards his vision and told no one about what he saw. Many battles were fought against the Lakotas and the Wasichu soldiers. Back Elks cousin was Crazy …show more content…
I like who Black Elk explained how they fought the Wasichu buy riding their horses around the Wasichu carts and slowly moving the circle closer. Then they would hang on the outside of their horses and shot under the horse’s head at the Wasichu. The toughest battle to read was the one about Wounded Knee and how it was started by a accidental shooting when Yellow Bird would not let go of his gun. During the reading I could relate to the stories being told, like the one of high horse. I could relate to these stories because, when I was growing up my grandma and mother would tell me stories to teach me lessons and also to explain how things worked in a simpler way. As I got older I found out these storied they told me were not real and just life lessons. I think this was a great book for this course because it shows a different culture and their religious beliefs. It also showed how they were treated and eventually ran off of their land by other people. This was an amazing book to read and I would highly recommend this book to anyone for any
Neidhardt in Black Elk Speaks offers an introspective narrative of the spiritual atmosphere surround the Sioux’s spiritual legacy. In doing so, the author promotes the validation and worthiness of spirituality in the so-called modern society. It is his intent to use the prayer as a vehicle to transmit the message that transcends the mere formulation of an apologetic thesis. Hence, Neidhardt seeks to penetrate the reader’s soul by presenting with a healing body of text, which he structures following two main themes: spiritual leadership and everyday human struggle against the corruption of the mind by the limitation to see beyond one’s physical strength.
The book that i chose to do this speech on is Cowboy Ghost. Cowboy Ghost is about a boy named Titus who goes on a cattle drive through Florida in the early 1900s. The main character in this story is Titus. Titus Timothy MacRobertson is a small and weak 16 year old boy that wants to impress his father that kind of ignores him. His mother died giving birth to him and his father “blames” Titus for her death. His father (Rob Roy MacRobertson) is a strong, massive and hardworking man. His brother Micah is a 29 year old man that is described as being a second Rob Roy MacRobertson because of his strength and size, at the end of the book you find out that he was more like their mother. The cattle drive was going really good until seminoles (indians)
The unredeemed captive was a very interesting story. John Demos created this story to inform on what happened in the past. I learned the story of the raid on Deerfield in 1704. The importance of not only the dangerous journey these captives endured, but the story for one child, Eunice Williams. She had to give herself along with the other Native Americans captures and to continue life among the wilderness. I watched the relationships among many tribes build and crumble while hearing a story of a family who was ripped apart for many decades. Things happen in life; it’s not about what happens, it’s about how you react to them.
I think you should keep on showing this movie to your other classes. When you showed this movie, all the kids in class paid attention to it and actually learned something from it because it caught there attention unlike other movies we have seen. If you show this to other classes it will have the same result and will help you in teaching the class. Also, the movie helped us understand how life was like in the West. It showed us that the soldiers were really ruthless and that they would just kill the buffalo for the hide and tongue, leaving the rest of the animal there to rot. While the Indians would take everything from the animal and use it to there advantage and there would be nothing to waste.
It is an honest recount of events that lead to a downfall in the indigenous community where they lost an unreal amount of power. It is without questions that Daschuk makes his points heard, while being clear and concise and his arguments are valid. I learned an incredible amount about the Indigenous society from reading this book and although Daschuk does not touch on it, I feel if young people read this it would help with the racism in today’s society because they would be further educated on what it is indigenous people had to go
I really enjoyed learning about the Makah Indians. I personally thought they were very interesting. The Makah are a lot different than a lot of other tribes. I never learned about any northwest coast until now. I have studied many different cultures and this is one of my personally favorites and I am not just saying that but I mean that. They had a better life than some other Indian tribe’s hade after the settlers came to the U.S. I hope that you liked my paper on the Makah Indians.
Reading the autobiography of Chief Black Hawk made me realize how giving the Sac tribe actually was compared to as they call it the whites. The Sac Tribe was based on peace and spiritual lifestyle. They were not all for themselves none of them were. If someone they knew didn’t have what they needed but they did, they wouldn’t hesitate to share. That is how all communities should be but unfortunately we aren’t all as giving as the Sac. They were such good people, which make me wonder why the whites were so devious towards them. They could trick them into agreeing to something without even knowing it. The Sacs had great crops so no one in their village went hungry and they made sure of it. All of them hunted even the women which gave them plenty of meat, fruits, and vegetables until the next time to hunt. This village was full of very happy people. They had everything they needed to survive and they were all so close, and they all helped each other out and had each other’s backs at the end of the day. If I had to choose a tribe to be in I would go to the Sac tribe just from reading this autobiography.
that was used by Indians to designate the white man, but having no reference to the color of his skin. Black Elk describes the life of Indians, which is very spiritual and could be very unattainable to understand to the naked eye of a regular person who did not know all the Indians’ beliefs. While still young, at the age of nine, Black Elk had a vision where he was the leader of all his people. Where he was given a gift from Great Spirits to save the Indian civilization by driving a way the Wasichus from their native land. After the dream, he was courageous and willing to go fight the barbarians.
Daniel Boone was born November 2, 1734 in a log cabin in Berks County, near Pennsylvania. Boone is one of the most famous pioneers in history. He spent most of his life exploring and settling the American frontier.
Black Elk Speaks is a novel based on the memories of Black Elk that he shared with a poet John Neihardt. Black Elk was an Oglala Sioux religious leader that had become a medicine man when he had had a vision in his teen age. Black Elk had already catholicized when he met Neihardt and was a catechist in reservations. He told Neihardt the story of his life so that it got eternalized and the future generations had the possibility to get to know the history of the Sioux.
Greed is a large part of the American culture whether we realize it as a society or not. Many countries around the world view the United States as a selfish country that does what it wants on a global scale, and does not share or allocate its predominate wealth. I am very thankful and proud to be a citizen of this country. Even though I would risk my life to protect our country and its freedom, there are aspects about our civilization that I wish could be different. Black Elk, “a holy man and a warrior of the Lakota Nation Indians,” was a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe during the most horrific period for Native Americans in the Western part of the United States. In excerpts from the novel of his life story Black Elk Speaks, he is able to relate the differences in the ways of life from his people and the white settlers. Although he lived in the late 1800s, he is able to make reference to issues that are relevant to us today. His observations display issues such as human bonds, ethics, economics, and politics. He describes how the excessive acquisitiveness of one society led to the cultural displacement of another.
The lesson that I really liked in ”Song of the Hummingbird” is how one should stay true to one’s beliefs. I really liked this because Huitzitzilin kept her beliefs even though the Spaniards tried to convert her to Christianity. After the Spaniards baptized her and gave her a new Christian name, she was not happy. In fact she hated the Spaniards for that. She did not want to give

There are so many books that I could recommend for my students to read; however, for today, I am going to choose Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke. Inkheart follows a young girl, Meggie, who has inherited a unique power from her father; Meggie has the power to bring words to life. This novel contains abstract ideas, such as travel between dimensions, talking animals, and mythical creatures; but, these topics aren’t entirely unfamiliar to most of the 21st century. The book deals with loss, family, loyalty, love and more. This novel has a good amount of familiar vocabulary but also a good amount of new vocabulary. Though Meggie lives in the 21st century, she travels to a time period when a different style of speaking was used, so students will be
The gay invitation arrived at my house, one day before the date. The invitation was strangely hotsy - totsy in an odd sort of way. Yet, even the material of the invitation screamed the host of this party was full of jack, so it was spiffy for me to show up at one, but just this once. Even though I had no idea who this man was, I supposed I could take a chance, for once in my life.
