The question of reparations for black communities as a way to repay for the wrongdoings and discrimination towards them in America is an extremely controversial subject and it is a question that has been lingering for decades. Morally, African Americans, and black communities in general, are owed reparations for slavery and segregation, which left a legacy of lost wealth and opportunity. Although I believe every black individual who faces injustices should be dealt reparations, not only is it not practical, but many people have opinions on the matter that differ greatly from mine. However, it is not practical to go around just handing out payments to every black individual who faces injustice. Instead, there must be extensive research done on the question at hand and come up with a systematic way of dealing with reparations for individuals of the black community. That is essentially similar with what Representative John Conyers has proposed every year during the opening session of Congress since 2013. His bill H.R. 40 is to examine the history of slavery and examination from 1619 through the present and recommend appropriate remedies. According to a United Nations affiliated group and panel, reparations could come in a variety of forms, including “a formal apology, health initiative, educational opportunities … psychological rehabilitation, technology transfer and financial support, and debt cancellation”(Tharoor). Reparations for the black community will also benefit others outside the community by educating about the harms and the wrongdoings of the past, as well as the injustices black individuals faced from the Middle Passage to Jim Crow laws. There is no doubt that what the black community has faced calls for reparations, but there is still much controversy over how to pay them and who to pay them to.
