Two major renowned and notable Magazines/Newspapers shared the same chief editor: Henry R. Luce, who was an ardent advocate of civil rights for every American, his magazines tended to sympathize with the Civil Rights Movement, and came-out strongly against segregationists and the Ku Klux Klan in particular. On top of this, Life Magazine traditionally placed much emphasis on photo-journalism, and its articles on the Civil Rights Movement were no different, as each contained several pictures of the events, the question that arises is: What was the role of Black American photographers in defending their cause? Mr.Withers photographed ordinary people in the street but he also photographed celebrities like Martin Luther King and the legendary musician BB.King,Ray Charles and several others. In his work “Escape and Revolt in Black and White,” James M. McPherson discusses the lives of now famous black and white defenders of the black population and how society’s views of these individuals changed over time. The majority of his essay focused on the stories of Harriet Tubman, Harriet Jacobs, and John Brown, each of whom impacted their own immediate surroundings, even if only on a small scale, in an attempt to improve the condition of blacks. He investigates whether these now famous individuals became famous due to their own merits or as another piece of propaganda to support either side of the fight over civil rights. Gun-slinging, militant-looking, irate adolescent African American men, women, and children: an incessant image employed by the revolutionary artist Emory Douglas. Douglas is perhaps one of the most iconic artists’ of the 20th century and has created thousands of influential protest images that remain unforgettable to this day. Through the use of compelling images Emory Douglas aided in defining the distinct visual aesthetic of the Black Panther Party’s newspapers, pamphlets, and posters. It was through such mediums that Douglas had the ability to enlighten and provoke a predominately illiterate and uneducated community via visual communication, illustrating that art can evolve into an overpowering device to precipitate social and political change.
The Effects of African American Culture Appropriations on the Minority Black Culture The black culture is the minority culture in this instance and in most cases, it is dominated by the white culture which has imposed its ideas on them (Stuckey, 2013). When two different cultures come together, different types of cultural appropriations occur. These include transculturation, cultural dominance, and cultural exploitation. The appropriation between the white and black cultures, resulting in the African American culture, is defined by cultural dominance and exploitation.
World War II presented several new opportunities for African Americans to participate in the war effort and thereby begin to earn an equal place in American society and politics. From the beginning of the war, the black media urged fighting a campaign for a “Double Victory”: a global victory against fascism at the warfront and national victory over racism at the homefront. In spite of the literary and artistic achievements of the Harlem Renaissance, the economic or political gains that the black community expected did not come to light from the African American participation in the First World War. (Perry 89) Thus the black media aimed to obtain that foothold that would bring about racial equality. They emphatically declared that there would be no lessening of racial activism, in order to present a consolidated front to America’s enemies.
I recently visited the American History museum and came upon the most interesting artifact in the Lighting a Revolution section within the Transportation and Technology wing of the museum. This artifact is an advertisement from Charleston, South Carolina in 1769 about the selling of “a choice cargo” of two hundred and fifty slaves.
She focuses on snapshots of a person’s daily life. hooks discusses the significance of these snapshots in the time of post-segregation; when negative stereotypes of African-Americans were rampant. For black people, these snapshots allowed others to see that in reality, black and white people were not all that different. Snapshots allow people to “look at ourselves with new eyes…create oppositional standards of evaluation” and now “[black people] saw [themselves] represented in these images not as caricatures, cartoon like figures; [they] were there in full diversity of body, being, and expression, multidimensional” (hooks, 61). hooks believed that the snapshots broke down the mental barriers between black people and white people in the minds of white people. What the whites learned through the images was that although they believed that the blacks were almost subhuman, in reality, they were no different from them. They both did normal, human activities such as playing games, loving their family, or celebrating. Tsarnaev’s selfie classifies as a snapshot, which is unusual for a magazine cover. Most magazine covers are professionally done photos that are edited and photoshopped to look flawless however the image of Tsarnaev is raw and taken with a cellphone camera. Being a resident of South Carolina, African-American Culture was chosen as part of the applied learning project for the Intercultural Nursing class, because African-Americans make up more than a quarter of this state’s population. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, the total population for South Carolina (S.C.) is 4,625,364, with 27.9% being of African-American descent. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding and sensitivity to issues and cultural variances or phenomena that are unique to the African-American Culture. Another goal is to identify nursing interventions that are important for the nurse to consider in caring for this population. These phenomena’s include variances in social organization, communication, space, perception of time, environmental control, and biological variations associated with the African-American culture. The year was 1915, Carter G. Woodson had recently traveled from Washington D.C to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of emancipation. This gave him and thousands of other African Americans the ability to appreciate displays highlighting the progress African Americans had made since the abolishment of slavery. This occasion inspired Woodson and four others to form the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now Association for the Study of African American Life and History or ASALH). This organization’s purpose was to recognize and promote the accomplishments and history of African Americans that often went unnoticed. In 1916, Woodson created The Journal of Negro History in hopes that it would familiarize people with the findings and achievements of African Americans. But Woodson wanted more; he wanted all people to celebrate and be aware of the great things African Americans had and were accomplishing. He wanted both whites and blacks to have strong, positive affiliations. Woodson decided the best way to accomplish these things was to create Negro Achievement Week.
Black history month is mainly a month that promotes racism among society. In nineteen seventy-six, America names February as black history month, as a commemoration of significant events and individuals of the African-American ancestry. Even though, black history month started as an innocent idea and if the American government would have rejected it, there would have been a colossal backlash across the black community. However, if one would take a step back and look at the big picture, one would notice that black history is American history, shows that not all ethnic groups is treated equally and brings a past time up that pours salt in old wounds. With African Americans being apart of the fashion industry, they faced many hardships. However, they created a distinctive voice in the history of fashion. Throughout the early twentieth century, Blacks designers influenced the fashion industry in America, having, “a system and structure for maintaining their particular type of fashion.” African American fashion was very popular and caught the attention from the media. The first place I found this story was on Fox news station which led me to look in my alternative new source, the Chicago Defender. The Chicago Defender is a Chicago newspaper that is a century old. The Defender is an African American newspaper. On May 5 1905, The Defender was founded in the kitchen of Robert Abbott. It originally was a four page editorial piece made by local items Abbott found around the area and only had a circulation of about 300 copies selling for twenty five cents each. As the years went on the Defender slowly grew into a major outlet for the feelings of the African American community, being know for its outspokenness through attacking white oppression and defending equality for African Americans. The Defender, in its prime, featured poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Langston Hughes along with pieces by many other writing legends. Since then the newspaper has evolved into a daily newspaper that as recently as 2009 was recognized as the most influential newspaper of its kind in the early and mid-20th century. Although in recent years the paper has declined. It was recently purchased by Real Time Inc. that intends to continue the original intent of the paper, to appeal and inform the African American community as well as help the paper expand in the future (Chicago Defender history dates back over a century).
The first article that stood out in this edition of the weekly newspaper, was the article titled “To the Freedman of the United States,” by Buchanon. This article was a message sent to the newly freed African Americans telling them what they should do with this new founded freedom. The first part sticks out the most when looking at this article because Buchanon urges the African Americans to not become their enemies. Buchanon says, “…Challenge the admiration of those who have been our greatest enemies, and gain the respect of the whole nation: and our position as colored citizens will be envied by all the nations of the world” (Buchanon, 1865).
Traditions are practices/beliefs that are passed down from generation to generation. In traditional African societies, a kinship ties people through birth or marriage. There are two kinds of relationships in customary African tradition; those bound by blood, which are called consanguine, and those constructed by marriage, called affilial. There are four key descents that determine inheritance and marriage. However, the most common descent is patrilineal, which traces ancestry through one's father. While in America, we are vary tolerant of tracing our descent from both parents.
