This may be surprising to some, but some people may not know a lot about birth control or STDs. “Condoms are the only type of birth control that protects against STDs. When used correctly, condoms are also fairly effective at protecting against pregnancy — but they're not as successful as hormonal methods like the Pill, patch, ring, IUD, or birth control shot” (Lancaster). In this essay I will be explaining the methods and the different types of birth control and STDs. I’ll also be touching on the advantages and disadvantages of birth control and how to treat and prevent STDs. As Allison states a few advantages to the combined birth control pill are that it is more effective if you take the pill as your doctor prescribes, it decreases the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer and it will decrease your risk of having osteoporosis, and according to Allison it is effective 97% of the time. Disadvantages to the combined pill include it doesn’t protect against STDs, it must be taken at the exact same time everyday and you have to have a prescription. Allison states that a couple advantages to taking the minipill are they can be taken by smokers over 35, which the combined birth control cannot be taken by smokers and it can be taken by women who are breastfeeding, she also states that it is effective 96% of the time. Allison states disadvantages to taking the minipill include that it may cause irregular periods, and just like the combined birth control they don’t protect against STDs and you need a prescription. Hormone injections and implants have about the same advantages and disadvantages, but the effectiveness differs by a little. Allison states that hormone implants are effective 99.9% of the time and hormone injections are effective 99.6% of the time. Allison describes the advantages of the implants are that they work for 5 years, you don’t have to remember to take birth control, and are okay for women who can’t take estrogen. Advantages to the hormone injection, as Allison states include that you may not have your period after having injections for about 1 year and reduce seizures in women with epilepsy. Disadvantages include that it may cause spotting or irregular periods and you have to go to the doctor every three months for an injection.
