Demi Lovato was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 22 years old.At a young age and thought her childhood she was terribly bullied. When she asked why they were bullying her the kids just said, it was because she’s fat. This triggered the bipolar disease and her coping mechanisms of dealing with the undiagnosed disorder started her down a very lonely, dark, and dangerous path. Demi was trying desperately to feel better. Some of the ways she found release was through her eating disorder, (bulemia nervosa). She was also cutting on a regular basis and hiding it as best she could by using makeup or wearing tons of bracelets. She was outed during a photo shoot in which her fresh cut marks appeared clearly in one of the phots. She thought …show more content…
she had covered it up well enough with makeup but it was clearly a sign that she needed to get some help. Instead of getting the help she needed, she told her parents and friends that she had this all under control and it would not happen again. Not knowing or understanding that she may have a clear mental disorder that would need to be medicated she continued to cut. Demi knew she just had to get more sneaky about it, so she changed the location of the cutting to hide it better. Her mom was aware now, and continued to push Demi to talk and ask for help if she felt she needed it. Sadly, her entire life turned upside down when she had a huge outburst in her manic phase of the disease and punched one of her dancers/friends. She was at that point put into a treatment facility for approximately here months. Probably the best thing that could have ever happened to her. While in treatment she was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. This illness causes severe, and unusual mood, energy and activity levels. This would limit if not stop all together the inflicted ones day to day lives. The disorder can be crippling. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. There are four basic types of bipolar disorder; all of them involve clear changes in mood, energy, and activity levels.Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When your mood shifts to mania or hypomania (less extreme than mania), you may feel euphoric, full of energy or unusually irritable. These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity, judgment, behavior and the ability to think clearly. Episodes of mood swings may occur rarely or multiple times a year. While most people will experience some emotional symptoms between episodes, some may not experience
any. Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, you can manage your mood swings and other symptoms by following a treatment plan. In most cases, bipolar disorder is treated with medications and psychological counseling (psychotherapy). The exact cause of bipolar disorder isn’t known, but a combination of genetics, environment, and altered brain structure and chemistry may play a role. Manic episodes may include symptoms such as high energy, reduced need for sleep, and loss of touch with reality. Depressive episodes may include symptoms such as low energy, low motivation, and loss of interest in daily activities. Mood episodes last days to months at a time and may also be associated with suicidal thoughts. Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications and psychotherapy.
Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder characterized by the DSM-5 of depressed mood and markedly diminished interest or pleasure in nearly all activities occurring nearly every day, for most of the day, as indicated by a subjective self-report or an observational report from others. Individuals who have depression also tend to experience significant weight loss, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, fatigue and loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, diminished ability to concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death. Most people who suffer from depression usually experience major depressive episodes in unipolar major depression, while some others experience both depressive and manic episodes in bipolar
Bipolar Disorder (Formerly known as Manic Depression) is a mental illness linked to alterations in moods such as mood swings, mania, and depression. There is more than one type, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, and the subcategories are divided by the severity of the symptoms seen, such as cyclothymic disorder, seasonal mood changes, rapid cycling disorder and psychosis. Age of onset usually occurs between 15-30 years old with an average onset of 25 years old but it can affect all ages. (Harvard Medical School; Massachusetts General Hospital , 2013) Bipolar disorder affects more than two million people in the United States every year. (Gardner, 2011)
Rowling and Rowling wrote back, ending up as penpals and continue to be to this day. Lynch states that Rowling was the one who helped her through the disorder, though her director on set for Harry Potter helped her also. She eventually realized, with the help of family and friends, that she didn’t need to be extremely skinny to look wonderful and she went back to eating healthy again to this day. Yet another star who struggled with an eating disorder is Demi Lovato, who openly talks about her disorder. She had problems with her bulimia when she was young, 18 years old, and checked into the hospital in 2010. She grew up around a mother and a grandmother with bulimia and states that it didn’t make it easy for her. “Being around someone who is 80 pounds and had an active eating disorder… it’s hard to grow up like that.” Demi had said to American Way. She also went through drug and alcohol addictions along with the bulimia. She has said several times in interviews that she didn’t think that she would make it to 21 years. In January 2013 Demi had checked into a sober house and stayed there for about a
I have chosen to do a paper on Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar is a disorder in when a person’s mood inappropriately alternates between feelings of mania and depression. A bipolar mania is a mental illness classified by psychiatry as a mood disorder. Also individuals with bipolar disorder experience episodes of an elevated or agitated mood known as mania or hypomania, depending on the severity alternating with episodes of depression.
Jamison begins with a brief explanation of manic-depressive illness and its effects on human behavior. The term "manic-depressive illness" refers to a variety of mental disorders which share similar symptoms, but range greatly in severity. These disorders alters one's mood and behaviors, disrupt established sleep and sexual patterns, and cause fluctuations in energy level. Manic-depressive illness cause cycles of manic, energized highs followed by debilitating, lethargic lows. Such disorders usually develop early in life and intensify over time, leading to maniacal highs and devastating lows. The manic energy associated with mental disorders may cause a person to r...

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function.
On the outside Demi Lovato was every young girl’s idol in the late 2000’s. Lovato had her own successful television show, Sonny With a Chance on Disney Channel and starred in the Camp Rock movie series with the Jonas Brothers. However, on the inside she was suffering from multiple mental illnesses. She has suffered from bulimia, self-harm, anorexia, and depression. In 2011, she was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Since hitting rock bottom in 2010 she is slowly recovering from her mental illnesses. Bipolar disorder is described as unusual shifts in mood, activity levels, and energy (Bipolar Disorder). Specifically, Lovato suffered from bipolar depression (Be Vocal). Throughout her life, Demi Lovato has fought with many disorders including bulimia nervosa and bipolar disorder. In 2011, she voluntarily checked into a rehab facility to receive treatment for bulimia nervosa; however, the facility’s doctors soon diagnosed her with bipolar disorder, most likely bipolar II disorder. After receiving this diagnosis, Lovato’s struggles in her past made much more sense. As a child, she was frequently bullied, and it was at this point in her life when the depression
Depression is feeling low. Dont feel good about self and unhappiness. Mood changes include feelings of guilt and worthless, being sad for a period of time, and become disinterested in things they enjoyed or liked. Some behavior changes are suicide thoughts, eating or sleeping more or less, can`t concentrate, and poor performance in school work or job.
A person suffering from bipolar disorder alternates from manic states to those of depression. These emotional states can alternate cyclically or one mood may dominate over the other. It is also possible for the two to be mixed or combined with each other.
Bipolar disorder is the condition in which one’s mood switches from periods of extreme highs known as manias to periods of extreme lows known as depression. The name bipolar comes from the root words bi (meaning two) and polar (meaning opposite) (Peacock, 2000). Though often bipolar disorder is developed in a person’s late teens to early adulthood; bipolar disorder’s early symptoms can sometimes be found in young children or may develop later on in life (National Institutes of, 2008). Bipolar disorder has been found to affect both men and women equally. Currently the exact cause of bipolar disorder is not yet known, however it has been found to occur most often in the relatives of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (National Center for, 2010).
Mood disorders are emotional roller coasters where the person in one moment is enthusiastic and full of energy and in the moment after all of this crashes and the person becomes depressed. This is known as a bipolar disorder, the unipolar depression on the other had is a mood disorder where the person is in a deep depression state with no positive thoughts.
Bipolar Disorder is the tendency of manic episodes to alternate with major depressive episodes, like a roller coaster. Barlow, D., Durand, M., Stewart, S., & Lalumière, M., 2014, p. 222. Their moods and relationships are unstable and they usually have a very poor self image, recurrent feelings of emptiness and fear of abandonment. Barlow, D., Durand, M., Stewart, S., & Lalumière, M., 2014, p. 444.
Examples of this are depression or extreme elation. Some people may experience periods of depression or elation, but this doesn’t mean they have a mood disorder. Mood disorders are defined around different episodes. Episodes are periods of time where someone will show signs of different symptoms that reflect a change from how they were before (Davis, Gfeller, Thaut, 2008). If someone is having a depressive episode and this lasts for a long period of time, they may be experiencing depression.
