I am currently a junior at Union College majoring in Bioengineering, with a minor in Dance. I am applying for the Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) at NIH. I learned about this position through the NIH website while looking at applying for the main summer internship program. This summer I would like to pursue research in the field of regenerative medicine. The BESIP at NIH is a good fit for me because of the wide range of cutting edge research topics offered through this program in my desired research field.
My professional goal is to get my Ph.D and pursue biomedical research at a top research institution in academia or industry. The specific fields of bioengineering I am interested in are tissue engineering and regenerative

My lab work in chemistry, and biology labs has taught me lab techniques involving measuring and interpreting, calorimetry, gas chromatography, properties of chemicals, metabolic rates, and cell microscopy. I feel the technical skills I have acquired through my studies in chemistry and biology laboratories would translate well to this intern position. I am a quick learner and am eager to expand upon these research techniques and acquire new ones.
In addition, through my biomechanical and electrical engineering course work I have learned how to work with my colleagues to design, and execute experiments that solve difficult engineering problems. For example, in my digital signal processing class I worked in a team to generate a convolved recording. Then presented our processes, and results in the form of an academic paper. My experiences in my engineering classes have prepared me to effectively analyze and present data and work as a team to develop creative and effective solutions to engineering problems. I am confident that I will be a valuable asset to a research group because I am dedicated, hardworking, love challenges and am eager to learn. In this article, the author openly questions whether it is a good idea to let high school or college students trying to pursue a medical career shadow physicians by sharing her personal experience and research results. She indicates that the physician shadowing tradition goes back more than 60 years and involves not only medical or pre-med student, but also high school teenagers (Kitsis, 2013). Although the author highly doubts the actual benefit from physician shadowing and the problem of patient privacy, I still think physician shadowing is a necessary activity for both students and the health system.
In regards to my academic and career goals, I plan to attend a four year university and eventually medical school. After medical school, I hope to become an orthopedic surgeon through residency and specialize in sports medicine. My interest in sports medicine has developed through experiences such as observing my father’s ACL surgery, having an operation on a broken hand, and caring for my grandfather who had prostate cancer. I hope to contribute to the world of sports medicine through research, either on treatments for knee ligament tears or supplement breakthroughs. Additionally, this past summer I spent most of my time at the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy, where I was able to explore various science-related health professions through lectures and gain insight on the medical field. These experiences have secured my interest for healthcare and medicine.
As a laboratory prep, I was able to set up labs for freshmen and sophomore biology classes. Also, I made visits to my professor’s labs to observe the procedures graduate students used for their experiments and I loved it. After completion of my freshman year, I participated in the “Maternal Child Health Pipeline Training Program” that following summer. I conducted field research that focused on the public health of mothers and children in rural communities. The fall semester of sophomore year, I shadowed graduate students studying breast cancer cells. Later that same year, I began my own research with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Upon my junior year, I was accepted into the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medical Program in Auburn, Alabama. At the same time, I was accepted into the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Association in Iquitos, Peru. Throughout this internship at Northwestern Medicine, it was mostly an informative experience which I enjoyed because my interests were going into the medical field and I wanted to learn as much as I can. During this experience, I was put into the Neurology department which was my field of choice. This week, 26 undergraduate students from universities across the country arrived at the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering to take part in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer internship program. This competitive summer research experience is an 11-week internship where students will work closely with the college’s faculty to investigate a fundamental question within the broad disciplines of polymer science and polymer engineering, including chemistry, physics, characterization and biomaterials.
