Course Description
Welcome to Biology 101! This course is an introduction to basic concepts in biological sciences. The course will cover the chemistry of life, the cell and cellular functions, cell division and reproduction, Mendelian genetics, evolution, ecology and molecular biology. The course contains a lecture and a laboratory session. Students will have a chance to learn and apply the principles taught in the course.
Course Objectives
Biology is the science that allows us to understand life and living organisms. Understanding the basic concepts in biology is crucial whether we are concerned with understanding how our body works to keep our health, or what the relationships are between organisms and their environment to keep our planet healthy.
This course explores the fundamental principles and concepts of biology examples from everyday life and emphasizes how the concepts were originally conceived and tested and how alternatives were rejected.
In the laboratory, students will learn and use the fundamental concepts of biology to draw conclusions from data, to develop alternative hypotheses to explain observations, to make predictions, and to design experiments to test hypotheses.
At the completion of this course, you should have the knowledge and skills that are associated with a biologically literate citizen. Regardless of your role in society, knowledge of biology has become increasingly important to make informed decisions about health issues, environmental problems and related new technologies.
You should understand and appreciate the relationship between biological knowledge and your ability to survive in the modern world, to raise healthy children, to contribute to societal and governmental decisions now and...

Lecture Materials and Review Questions
This course is web enhanced; all lecture outlines and PPT slides are posted on the course web site in CANVAS Learning System. You are encouraged to print them for taking notes and working the study problems. Because the lecture presentation will be keyed to the outlines and the textbook, bringing both of these to class will make your note taking easier and more effective. You are required to complete assignments and test online in this course. It is your responsibility to make sure you have appropriate computer and internet access. Computers are available in the learning center in the campus 7 days a week for your use. All coursework will be open for a fixed length of time and must be completed in that interval.
The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher by Lewis Thomas consists of short, insightful essays that offer the reader a different perspective on the world and on ourselves.

The purpose of the series of experiments in the lab was to in part one, see the relationship between surface area, volume, and the rate of diffusion, diffusion is the process of substances crossing the cell membrane). In part two it was to create manmade “cells” to help discover hypotonic (when t...

As one develops knowledge of this career it is essential to have an understanding for what it is regarding. Zoology is a branch of biology that concerns the study of animal life (Zoology). Animals, in this frame of reference, are any living organisms that are not fungi, plants, viruses or bacteria. Animals include creatures like marine sponges, jellyfish, frogs, worms, rock lobsters, snails, insects, birds, fishes and mammals (Types of Zoologists Z). Zoology has evolved into a different study as it now consists of psychology and ecology; where as it use to only concentrate on the structures and function of the cell (Zoology). Zoology applying ideas and techniques to life processes has not only grouped together different fields, but also created connections to other science fields; it allows animal’s relationships with each other and its environment to be explained more easily (Hanson). Zoology embodies organizations that carry groups of individuals that are educated in an equivalent field. The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) is the most substantial membership group for zoology majors. The AZA has over 6,000 members worldwide at professional levels. Also, The Zoological Association of America welcomes all levels of zoology m...

Biology literally means "the study of life". Biology is such a broad field, covering the minute workings of chemical machines inside our cells, to broad scale concepts of ecosystems and global climate change. Biologists study intimate details of the human brain, the composition of our genes, and even the functioning of our reproductive system. Biologists recently all but completed the deciphering of the human genome, the sequence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) bases that may determine much of our innate capabilities and predispositions to certain forms of behavior and illnesses. DNA sequences have played major roles in criminal cases (O.J. Simpson, as well as the reversal of death penalties for many wrongfully convicted individuals), as well as the impeachment of President Clinton (the stain at least did not lie). We are bombarded with headlines about possible health risks from favorite foods (Chinese, Mexican, hamburgers, etc.) as well as the potential benefits of eating other foods such as cooked tomatoes. Informercials tout the benefits of metabolism-adjusting drugs for weight loss. Many Americans are turning to herbal remedies to ease arthritis pain, improve memory, as well as improve our moods. Can a biology book give you the answers to these questions? No, but it will enable you learn how to sift through the biases of investigators, the press, and others in a quest to critically evaluate the question. To be honest, five years after you are through with this class it is doubtful you would remember all the details of meatbolism. However, you will know where to look and maybe a little about the process of science that will allow you to make an informed decision. Will you be a scientist? Yes, in a way. You may not be formally trained as a science major, but you can think critically, solve problems, and have some idea about what science can and cannoit do. I hope you will be able to tell the shoe from the shinola.
2). As a result, this scientific experiment changed the relationship of humankind and nature by foreseeing the modification of DNA of bacteria, yeast, plants, and animals to discover new medicines and to provide solutions for inherited diseases (Le Vine, 1999, p. 2).

When the average person thinks about zoology, they usually think about a zoo and or animals. As said in General Zoology, many questions come with this topic. “What is life? In what ways are the various kinds of animals alike or unlike in structure, internal processes, and modes of life? How do animals carry on their activities? How are the many kinds related to one another? In what ways does man resemble and differ from other living things? The answers to many of these questions are provided by the science of zoology.” (General Zoology, page 3). While zoology does involve animals, the general study of zoology is far more complicated then one would imagine. Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the classification, origins, habitats and behaviors of organisms. Someone who studies zoology is a zoologist, and has the tasks of learning about new species and their habitats. It is a job that if mastered, can be one of the most fulfilling and knowledgeable careers someone can obtain.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
Because cells are the ‘basic unit of life’, the study of cells, cytology, can be considered one of the most important areas of biological research. Almost every day on the evening news, we are told about new discoveries in cell biology, such as cancer research, cloning, and embryology. Since school days the terms like cell, genes, DNA, protein intrigued me a lot and helped me in realizing the dream of pursuing a career in Biotechnology field that has been making many remarkable achievements. The passion towards biological sciences made me to take B.TECH in Biotechnology in Dr. M.G.R. University.
What is aquatic biology? Aquatic biology is very similar to marine biology in that you study ecology, behavior of plants and animals, and microbes; however, instead of the main focus being saltwater, aquatic biologists study things like rivers, wetlands, ponds, and other freshwater resources (princetonreview.com). Being an aquatic biologist comes with many crazy experiences, some in college, others with diving, and some with preserving the environment.
