The major modification I made during this unit was the biography paper lesson plan. Originally I had planned to incorporate the biography paper into the poster presentation lesson because the biography is a part of the poster. I had graphic organizers to guide students with research and my thought was this would be enough for them to write a biography. The lesson that I originally wanted the students to write the biography in was going to have a checklist that they would follow and one check was the biography paper.

I originally planned to work with them individually when they would be in class. I also planned to go through all the same lessons with these students as the rest of the class. I quickly realized this would not be possible. I noticed right away with lesson one the students would not get to participate in the whole group activity. The three students were in and out at different times as well, so I could not have them work as a group. I decided to look over my unit and take the three learning outcomes and choose the major projects that align with the outcomes for the students to complete. This way the students would progress towards meeting the learning outcomes.
The first learning outcome is the students will examine factors that led to continuity and change on human development. I took this outcome and chose the first lesson to re teach with the three students who missed this lesson because this introduces the unit and touches base with the most important aspect of this unit: why we celebrate black history month. I used the graphic organizer and provided them with the notes to complete the graphic
For my Project Learning Summary I chose to focus on two people and one movement that I believe have a strong impact on society today. Each of the topics has had an influence during their respective eras, and each proved that their work has gone onto make changes in the world as we see it today. I first looked at Darwin, for his work on natural selection and the significance it has had on science and religion. I then took another look at Booker T. Washington, and how his stance on integration of African Americans into a “white” society was at the end of slavery and what his efforts have done since. Lastly, I looked at the Feminist Movement and the efforts that were taken for improving equality as a whole in society.
Bessie Elizabeth Coleman was born January 28,1892 in Atlanta, Texas. Her mother wanted to move back to Texas by that time Bessie was only 2 years old. Waxahachie, a town of fewer than 4,000 people. She was the tenth out of thirteen children in her household with her two parents Susan and George Coleman. Susan and George were married for 17 years with up’s and down. George was mixed with African American and part Cherokee.
Finally, for homework I would assign the reading of excerpts of “Warriors Don’t Cry”, the memoir of Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine. I would ask the students to pretend that they were a student at Central High in 1957 and write a page long diary entry about what one would be seeing and how one would be feeling at this time. All of these activities would promote student-centered learning in that they are free to arrive at their conclusions independently, and they would help develop Formal Operational skills through hypothetical deductive logic.
Over the semester I have done a great deal of listening, reading, reflecting, and a good bit of talking as well. I realized early on in this course that in order to look toward the future, I had to dig through the past. I began by examining myself and the looking into the history of the independent school movement. I examined my own feelings about race and privilege, the founding of Rocky Mount Academy (RMA), and spoke with Tony Shanks, RMA’s first Black student. I came to the conclusion that in order to shape the future of RMA, I must accept who I am, examine the history of the school, and proactively transform who we were into who we can become. I believe we should continue to strive to be the finest school in Rocky Mount by providing the best education to students regardless of race, religion, class, or economic status. Although I still have more to learn and more to do as an educator, I feel I have begun an important journey to help me be a part of a transformation at my school.

Being able to learn about race in context with the history of America helped me to be able to understand our collective history together and why things happened the way they did. It has helped me understand where we are coming from and how we need to dismantle the system that gives unfair privileges based on skin color. This unit has shown me why there is such a wealth gap between White Americans and Black Americans. I feel like I can understand the history of all sides of my family much better now that I see race through the lens of past

Artifact 1: Artifact 1, under Tab C: Curricular Content Knowledge, the Instructional Plan Module, completed during ELSE 6193 Laboratory Experience was completed. For the Instructional Module, candidates were to create and teach two lesson plans for both elementary and secondary instructional settings. The lessons plans were to address one or more of the goals and objectives that were written in each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP). The candidates were to describe in detail the adaptations and modification that were needed for the target students to be able to fully participate in each lesson. Additionally, each lesson plan was to incorporate some type of technology.
The understandings I have gained from this course have completely revamped my way of teaching. I have been using the unit plan and curriculum map I created in this course for the past two years, and my students enjoy it more and more each year. The independent work that I would give them would be modified for the special education students and I’ll have them do half of the worksheet instead of the whole thing to see their progress. Whenever I can, I will give them the easier problems with the same concept. For the students that are learning the lessons quick I will give them harder problems of the same lesson. I will make sure for the students that don’t understand the lesson do not feel rushed and give the other students more work so they can spend more time on the lesson. This helps to make sure the whole class is on the same level and no student is falling behind. My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths. Education is for everyone and it’s a right by low for all; teachers, on the other hand, should do their jobs very honestly and effectively.
My classes' abilities range from high to very low. The highest of my students can read, speak in full descriptive sentences, respond creatively, and appropriately to thought provoking questions. Whereas, my lowest students know only a couple letters of the alphabet, have difficulty coming up with meaningful sentences and often answer questions with statements that have no bearing on the subject matter. My biggest challenge when planning for this period of instruction was to find a way to actively involve all of my students and offer success for everyone, regardless of skill level. I decided to have stations where 4 students, at a time, would be engaged in stimulating activities and where there would be very little "wait"...
