The production of biofuels requires the cultivation, processing, and transportation of appropriate crops. Food production shares many of these same needs, and this conflict of resources has been the subject of numerous debates. The cultivation of crops for biofuels increases the consumption of natural resources and contributes to world hunger by redirecting the use of edible grains (Pimentel, et al., 2009, 9). We will look at 3 major points of debate on biofuel production: influence on food production, use of natural resources, and effect on the price of food.
1. Food available and biofuel consumption
Biofuel production presents a win-win situation for developing countries by creating rural jobs and increasing food security, but there are concerns about the implications for world hunger resulting from biofuels expansion (Peskett, et al., 2007, 16). Nearly half of the world is fed by small-scale farmers (Scherr, et al., 2010, 5). Much of the land worldwide is occupied by food crops, but malnutrition is still globally prevalent (Pimentel, et al., 2009, 2), and the use of edible crops for use in biofuels reduces the availability of food for those who need it (Molony & Smith, 2010, 495).
According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), using food grains to produce biofuels is already causing food shortages for the poor of the world (Pimentel, et al., 2009, 1). Some of the crops used for both food and biofuel production are corn, sugarcane, barley, soybean, wheat, rapeseed, and sunflower. Nearly 60% of humans in the world are currently malnourished (Pimentel, et al., 2009, 1). This will increase if grains previously used for food are instead used for biofuel production. ...f, chicken, pork, eggs, and milk more than 10% to 30% (Pimentel, et al., 2009, 1). For that reason, the feedstocks of biofuel influence the price of other crops because these necessary inputs are being diverted for a different purpose.
Staple food prices depend not only on variation in production but also on levels of stocks at global and national level (Peskett, et al., 2007, 17). Therefore, staple markets need to work better if rice and wheat are going to quickly take the place of maize consumption (Peskett, et al., 2007, 17). Choosing other alternative crops as the materials is the better way that can reduce the problems of food availability and severe variation in food prices. However, the only problem is that second generation biofuels are still in the developing stage and may become commercially available only in the next 10-20 years (Ajanovic, 2010, 6).
Given the amount of resources that the world as a whole has access to why use corn as a source of fuel? Some would say that countries, such as the United States have an overabundance of food produce. Logically, those countries that have an over surplus of food MUST have enough to put a dent into the rapidly increasing costs of oil and gasoline. Unfortunately, that is a misconception. In order to produce enough corn to fuel the global economy it is important to analyze what that actually means for farmers and the government, not to mention the actual food supply. Shifting back to a more locally sourced food economy is often touted as a fairly straightforward way to cut externalities, restore some measure of equity between producers and consumers, and put the food economy on a more sustainable footing.” (source E). The long-distance transportation of food uses a profligate amount of fuel and exploits cheap labor in the process. It can greatly assist the environment to buy from local sources by making the carbon footprint of food production lesser and saving natural resources such as oil.

The biotech boom has changed the way that producers grow their crops, for better or for worse. With the rapid growth of our global population pouring into the next millennium, we will witness an ever-growing hunger rate around the world. That is unless we call for a revolution on the global scale. The Green Revolution which already sprouted in the early part of the century only need to add a bit more momentum and we will see a bright future for the human race, a future without hunger and starvation ¡V hopefully.It is becoming increasingly difficult for the planet to support its overwhelming population. And since the amount of arable land available is becoming scarce, we must seek ways to dramatically improve crop yields of existing cropland.
Escalating prices for food are driving up the cost of groceries in the U.S., effecting consumers and companies. “Federal forecasters estimate retail food prices will rise as much as 3.5% this year, the biggest annual increase in three years, as drought in parts of the U.S. and other producing regions drives up prices for many agricultural goods” (Dreibus). For instance, “Drought in Brazil, the world's largest producer [in] coffee, sugar and oranges, has increased coffee prices, while dry weather in Southeast Asia has boosted prices for cooking oils such as palm oil” (Dreibus). Also, “In the U.S., much of the rise in the food cost comes from higher meat and dairy prices, due in part to tight cattle supplies after years of drought in states such as Texas and California and rising milk demand from fast-growing Asian countries” (Dreibus). Consumers and producers will take action to cope with these surging food prices under several economic principles.
With the increases in the global population and the increase need to feed this population, comes the great debate in how governments of the developed and developing world must tackle this important issue. In his article, The Politics of Hunger: How Illusion and Greed Fan the Food Crisis, Paul Collier examines the root causes of the food crisis and three ways (the slaying of giants) governments can easily come in finding a solution in the near-term, middle-term and long-term. The root causes, as outlined by Mr. Collier, are the increasing demand for food and increases in food prices. First, Collier states, “the first giant that must be slain is the middle to upper-class love affair with peasant agriculture.” In other words, increasing commercial agriculture and farming. Second, Collier states that the lifting of the genetically modified foods (GM crops) ban by Europe and Africa will allow a decrease in global food prices. Lastly, he states the United States must lift the subsidies on corn produced for biofuel and find an alternate biofuel source (like Brazilian sugar cane), thus decreasing the price on corn produced for food while increasing overall grain production.
In order for us to maintain our lives, we need to consume food to supply nutrient-needs for our bodies. As the global population increased, the demand for food also increased. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. On other hand, in developed and developing countries, people are overfed and suffering from obesity. In addition, the current methods of industrial farming destroy the environment. These problems raised a question to our global food system. Will it be able to sustain our increasing global population and the earth? With this question in my mind, I decided to investigate the sustainability of our current global food system.
More farmers are now planting crops for biofuel, resulting to an intense drop in food production. According to experts this promising alternative energy source is seemingly causing a global decrease of food supply. As the demand for biofuels increases, more industrialized countries are offering encouragements and subsidizing farmers to grow crops for fuel rather than for food. The biofuel production method was also anticipated to be carbon neutral, as the crops would absorb the carbon dioxide released when the biofuel was burned. However crops for fuel are now grown at such a rate that they need more energy to cultivate, grow and harvest. By the time it reaches households, it would have consumed more energy and released more greenhouse causing substances than the feared fossil fuels would have. The fact that emissions are released during production, processing, fertilizer application and as a result of land use change is highly ignored. Somehow biofuels can sidetrack less harmful and clean resources like renewable energies such as solar and wind energy. Large scale cultivation of biofuel crops, unlike small scale, locally produced and biofuel owned farms are commonly challenged by problems such as severe use of water, chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides. These also often lead to pollution, depleting and degrading available water resources which can cause famines. The global population in the year 2050 is expected to be nine billion and the agricultural demand is expected to double. With the current population already over seven billion people, there are hunger issues all around the world (“New” par. 1). How are we going to deal with food shortages in the future? With less land to work with, strains on the soils, and the lack of water, it is getting harder for the farmers of the world to support our growing population. These complications are making it harder for farmers to produce quality, affordable food. To help the crops grow better, farmers use fertilizers and chemical sprays to enhance growth and control the weeds. Farming in the United States is a relevant business because it supplies people with food, provides people with jobs maintaining the used equipment with the new equipment being much more expensive, and it provides research for more efficient ways on how to feed the world.
There are those that believe our planet has reached its maximum capacity to sustain humanity and we need to reduce our population to rectify it. It is also said that our planet is well capable of providing both the nutrition and caloric needs for humanity, both now and into the future as well. Regardless of where one’s opinion of the facts fall between these two arguments, global food security is not where it should be. Uneven development could be argued to be a cause of this. But it is not the only issue affecting the planet.
