Binyavanga Wainaina’s memoir details his childhood and perspective growing up in Kenya with his sister and brother. Through his memories, he describes the diversity and livelihood of Kenyan culture along with the destructive disputes between the tribes. Accordingly, it becomes evident that many people had a lasting influence on him within his lifetime. For example, Wainaina’s family members were very influential to the person he has become including June Wanjiru Wainaina, also known as Ciru. She is Wainaina’s younger and very intelligent sister and she plays a very influential role in Wainaina’s life; his admiration for his sister is evident even within the opening scenes of the memoir (Wainaina, 3). The two siblings develop a very close relationship growing up and often misbehaved and joked together. In Joy Kagawa's "Obasan" there are a variety of characters, each with their own drives, morals, and personalities. However, In Naomi Nakane's life two characters in particular are very important and integral pieces to forming this novel. These two characters are Obasan, or Ayako Nakane - Naomi's aunt by marriage, and Aunt Emily Kato - Naomi's maternal aunt. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” - Laozi. In Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, Tayo’s journey is being told. The reader travels in time with Tayo to experience pre and post war living, and to an extent, the role Native Americans play during that era. Through Tayo’s life, we see the importance of storytelling, and how without it, a culture is lost. Silko uses Tayo’s perception as a template to explain how storytelling guides a person mentally, strengthens a person physically, and supports a person emotionally. Without the cultural aspect of tradition and storytelling, there would be no journey because Tayo wouldn’t have known how to take that first step.

In Joy Kogawa’s novel, Obasan, Naomi’s experience throughout her life reveals the conflict between man versus self. Naomi seeks to find balance between remembering and forgetting her tragic childhood. Kogawa demonstrates how eradicating one’s past, dwelling on previous experiences, experiencing trauma, and shielding another from trauma can lead to one’s corruption.
Much about Kogawa's novel makes it difficult not only to read but also to classify or categorize. First, Obasan blurs the line between nonfiction and fiction. Kogawa draws from actual letters and newspaper accounts, autobiographical details, and historical facts throughout the novel, but she artistically incorporates this material into a clearly fictional work. In addition, Kogawa's narrative operates on multiple levels, from the individual and familial to the communal, national, political, and spiritual. Stylistically, the novel moves easily between the language of documentary reportage and a richly metaphorical language, and between straightforward narrative and stream-ofconsciousness exposition. This astonishing variety in Kogawa's novel can, at times, become bewildering and unsettling to the reader. But as many readers and critics have noted, Kogawa's style and method in Obasan also constitute the novel's unique strength. Kogawa writes in such a way that ambiguity, uncertainty, irony, and paradox do not weaken her story but instead paradoxically become the keys to understanding it.

Storytelling has a special importance in culture throughout the African continent; Anansi the spider in Ghana, is one great example of an African fable that teaches children important lessons including respect for elders, the importance of wisdom, and the importance of culture. These stories have been retained and perpetuated by oral tradition, despite the western emphasis on written records; African tribes have preserved history and culture well thorough oral historians. The translator, D.T. Niane, explains the validity of oral history well by stating that written text can contain inaccuracies as well (xv). Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara are both child victims of war with extremely different life stories. Both of them are authors who have written about their first-hand experience of the truth of the war in order to voice out to the world to be aware of what is happening. Beah wrote A Long Way Gone while Kamara wrote The Bite of the Mango. However, their autobiographies give different information to their readers because of different points of view. Since the overall story of Ishmael Beah includes many psychological and physical aspects of war, his book is more influential and informative to the world than Kamara’s book.
