William Sanford Nye, or more commonly referred to as Bill Nye, was born in Washington DC. His parents were geniuses like Bill. Fun fact, his mom helped out in WWII by breaking codes and his father was held at a Japanese prison of war. As a kid, Nye went to the private Sidwell Friends School. He later enrolled at Cornell University, where he studied mechanical engineering. Nye went on to begin his career at The Boeing Company in Seattle once he had earned his Bachelor of Science degree. At Boeing he developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor that is still in use. After winning a Steve Martin look-alike contest Bill began getting more involved in comedy. He was working as both a mechanical engineer and a stand up comedian. After some
time, he quit his engineering job and became a science and comedy writer and performer on a show called “Almost Live” which is where he was titled “Bill Nye the Science Guy” Very soon after he started the show it also began to air on PBS as an educational television program about science. Nye hosted the show and created over 100 episodes each with new and specific science related topics. The show is often used in schools as an educational tool. The show won 19 Emmy Awards and Nye personally received seven of them for writing, performing and producing. When the program ended, Bill continued to be a part of many other TV shows relating to science. He also hosted the 100 Greatest Discoveries show, and he even showed up in videos for some attractions at Walt Disney World and Epcot. Along with all the TV programs, Nye wrote many children's books about science one of which was called “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World.” Bill Nye was very well known and liked among the science community for making children learn to appreciate and enjoy science.
