Billionaire, co-founder of Microsoft, and philanthropist Bill Gates will soon announce the creation of a multibillion dollar clean energy fund. This will be done with the contributions of other billionaire donors as well as with the backing of many other countries including China and India. Gates will attend the Paris climate negotiations along with over 100 other world leaders. If one were to look at this with no knowledge of leadership theories they may think something along the lines of “Bill Gates is a great leader,” although they may not recognize why or how this is being done. Leadership scholars would see this move by Gates as a prime example of several key concepts to leadership theory including the use of ethical leadership, social change theory, and the recognition of the phases of making change.

in renewable energy in the face of climate change. Gates shows that he is an ethical leader by not just preaching about change while having the means to change it. Unlike many, Gates felt he had to have his personal and professional beliefs match, therefore he has made the plans to launch this multi-billion dollar fund in an effort to halt climate change. To do this he has employed another leadership tactic, the social change leadership theory. Gates plans to unveil his plan at the Paris climate talks on Monday, which will have over 100 world leaders attending.
The plan has already gained support from countries like China and India as well as the United States government. Gates also plans on receiving donations from other billionaires interested in the cause. This shows a great deal of collaboration by Gates which according to social change theory and the UCLA leadership model is an essential element to creating change. In fact Gates has shown nearly every one of the seven c’s of change as outlined by the UCLA model. He has shown consciousness of self by realizing he can make a difference, congruence to come up with the idea for the fund, commitment to take it from an idea to reality, common purpose by aligning it with government actions, controversy with those who believe climate change is fake, and citizenship by getting other billionaires to donate and giving others motivation to do more. By using this model, Gates shows that he has a deep understanding of how change is
made. He first challenged the status quo by wanting to use his personal money to create a fund to stop climate change. He then came up with a vision of how to do it. Currently his plan is in the initiating change phase, where he is attempting to recruit other change agents to his cause. He has not yet gotten to the most difficult part of the change making process, which is sustaining the changes he and his collaborators have made. However, with the knowledge of leadership theory he has shown up to this point with this project, one would be bold to bet against his success. This is just the latest of instances where Bill Gates has shown his aptitude for leadership, and it will surely not be the last.
After having helped found what would be the world’s most popular and largest software company in 1975, Bill Gates officially found himself to be the richest man alive at the ripe, young age of only thirty-one. Gates had never imagined that the thirteen year old boy who loved to program computers in his parent’s garage would one day find himself to be considered the world’s wealthiest man alive, having a total net worth of $76 billion. Having began on his own, tinkering with computers and computer software, Gates later created the seed of Microsoft, or what was originally called Traf-O-Data in the summer of 1972. (Fast Facts) It wasn’t until two years later, with the help of his co-founder, Paul Allen that Microsoft was born, transforming the technological world in ways that the people had never seen. The birth of Microsoft changed the ways of old computers, making way for faster newer and more innovative technology, along with bringing on a strong competition with their rival company, Apple Inc. With this grand cooperation, Bill Gates was also accumulating a large mass of money, gradually finding himself to top the charts of the Forbes World Billionaires List. (Fast Facts) Despite being well known for his contributions to Microsoft, Bill Gates’ most profound impact on the American culture was in medical and educational advances provided by The Gates foundation, paralleled by his philanthropic views and aid in the lives of the both poor and wealthy.
Horatio Gates was born on July 26th, 1727 in Maldon, England. A military man from a young age, he served as a lieutenant in the British Army and then later served as a captain during the French and Indian War, where he fought in the North American campaign. Though he would return to his native England following the conclusion of the war, he sympathized with the restive colonial protests against the British government in the following years resulting from the high taxes imposed on the colonies to pay for their defense. Gates eventually moved to Virginia in 1772 not long before the break out of the American Revolutionary War, where he was appointed an officer in the Continental Army. Warren characterizes gates as “an officer of bravery, punctuality, and a nice sense of military honor, but with the fine feelings of humanity, and the delicacy of the gentleman” (2009, p. 240).

When most people hear about Bill Gates the first thing that comes to mind is the obscene amount of money he has made through out his career. Owning many different foundations, the most common foundation known to most college students is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that provide many different scholarships. However, this foundation also does various things to give back to communities and aiding suffering countries. Within this foundation there are also various branches such as the United States Program, The Global Development Program and the Global health program that have grown over time making the Gates a commonly used household name.
Throughout his life he has proven time and time again he is a catalyst for change. Most people are only considered catalyst for changes if they excel in working for change in one aspect of the world. Bill Gates has successfully changed two huge aspects of the world. His passions have affected billions of people and he keeps going. Bill himself said this “If I had set some sort of finish line, don’t you think I would have crossed it by now?”(Bill … Quotes). Bill Gates has been, is, and will continue to be someone who works tirelessly to make the world a better place.
Gates’s idea regarding philanthropy due to the fact that upon setting up his foundation in 2000, he already was aware of the widespread criticism of existing programs to help the less fortunate. Moreover, successful programs, such as the Green Revolution, were overshadowed by growing awareness of their negative side effects on the environment and local cultures. Mr. Gates had growing awareness of such limits sparking new ideas on how businesses could approach poor countries. However, there is little evidence of benefit from the $2.3 trillion given in foreign aid over the past five decades. For example, all the aid given to Africa over the years has failed to stimulate economic growth on the continent. One might argue that there are just as many needy individuals in America, why not try to critically think of way to innovate to embody the struggling Americans, rather than poor countries around the
What makes Peter Thiel Tenacious and Different? With a net worth of $2.2 Billion, Businessman Peter Thiel is not your average entrepreneur. A revolutionary and cut throat inventor with a net income of about $204,000,00 per year, Thiel is undoubtedly one of the smartest people walking the earth today. Better known as the leader of the ‘PayPal mafia’, the 46 year old techpreneur strides the tech world with steady steps making impressionable investment decisions in his wake.
One area that Gates shows his true virtue comes from his financial generosity. According to Okie (2006), since the union of the Gates’ in 1994, they have strived to focus on charity to the health of the world through the establishment of the William H. Gates Foundation. This foundation, later renamed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, represents a resourceful and thoughtful move by Bill Gates as a successful businessman (Okie, 2006). This move resulted in the donation of billions of dollars of charitable giving in just the first ten years that reflected positively on his success in Microsoft (Okie, 2006). With the help of his friend, Paul Allen, Bill Gates started Microsoft with the vision of the future in computers and software development (Pittel, 2014). When examining the virtue of magnificence, one must understand the fine line between giving too much as an ethical leader or giving too little. When examining these potentials, one must explore the possibility that Gates gives too little in comparison to the vast amount of wealth in his
Bill Gates is now helping people in developing countries get water and an education full time. He created what is called the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “In 2008 he left the company to devote himself full-time to his charity the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation”(Harris 1). He has worked his whole life to get the success and money that he has today and instead of keeping it to himself he has given it back to society in many generous ways. He also is helping developing countries with their needs that aren't accessible to them. “They helped vaccinate African and Asian children against diseases like polio and malaria. And they have been very successful in helping get rid of these diseases for good.”(Harris 1). This foundation helped poorer countries get the medical help they need to get rid of illnesses that should have already been gone by now. Bill and his wife had had an impact on the world by doing these things

Gates has also given over half of his life earnings to charity and other public minded organisations. This has helped him achieve not only the status of one of the world's greatest entrepreneurs, but also a man who ultimately cares about the future of society, which is reflected in new product developments and technologies, all of which are designed to make our lives simpler.
There is no such thing as a “born leader”. Human, animals, trees, and all of other living things survive and develop by earning and acquiring information needed. Nothing could receive the current position or status from an automatic mode.
