Billionaire, co-founder of Microsoft, and philanthropist Bill Gates will soon announce the creation of a multibillion dollar clean energy fund. This will be done with the contributions of other billionaire donors as well as with the backing of many other countries including China and India. Gates will attend the Paris climate negotiations along with over 100 other world leaders. If one were to look at this with no knowledge of leadership theories they may think something along the lines of “Bill Gates is a great leader,” although they may not recognize why or how this is being done. Leadership scholars would see this move by Gates as a prime example of several key concepts to leadership theory including the use of ethical leadership, social change theory, and the recognition of the phases of making change.

The plan has already gained support from countries like China and India as well as the United States government. Gates also plans on receiving donations from other billionaires interested in the cause. This shows a great deal of collaboration by Gates which according to social change theory and the UCLA leadership model is an essential element to creating change. In fact Gates has shown nearly every one of the seven c’s of change as outlined by the UCLA model. He has shown consciousness of self by realizing he can make a difference, congruence to come up with the idea for the fund, commitment to take it from an idea to reality, common purpose by aligning it with government actions, controversy with those who believe climate change is fake, and citizenship by getting other billionaires to donate and giving others motivation to do more.
