I chose this individual because I believe he is one of the most influential people in the computer engineering world. He is a good example of how hard work and dedication to a profession can have a great turn out in the end which is something that also attracted me to further research his background story and life achievements. Bill Gates has had a great influence overall in both the hardware and the programming aspects of the computer world. Gates is also the owner and an engineer in his own company, which is one of the top computer software companies in the world, Microsoft.
Gates had been interested in computers since the age of 13. He went from going to Lakeside school to Harvard University. While at Harvard he was pursuing a law degree. However, this goal of a law degree was not his own but instead it was his parent’s goal for him. After two years of law school he dropped out to join his high school friend, later

business partner, Paul Allen to work at MITS. They were hired after showing the company a software that they made that could run on the companies “Altair” computer which netted both of them royalties from the company MITS which helped with the rise of their new company, Microsoft. The royalty deal did not provide them much income due to the fact that very few copies of the software were actually purchased. The rest of the software being used were copies of purchased versions which people could easily get for free. This stumped the growth of Microsoft which led to Gates thinking of different marketing techniques and other ways to further grow the company. What Gates did for his company was basically build it from the ground up. He took on the business aspects as well as the computing/engineering aspects of the company and made it all work out as one cohesive unit. He currently has stepped down from being chairman of Microsoft but has the new position of being the technology advisor to the new CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella. He says "I'm thrilled that Satya has asked me to step up, substantially increasing the time that I spend at the company,” He now chooses to spend more time on the software and product side of the business and is letting someone else handle the business side. This I believe to be a great decision because he now has a better grasp over the final end product that he and his engineers/programmers have created. After researching this person I have found that sometimes to be an engineer you have to just take a leap of faith in yourself.
In Gates’ case, he was going to law school not because he wanted to be a lawyer nut because his parents wanted him to become that. He then chose his own route to success which led him to where he is now, one of the wealthiest men in the world. His name is also known world-wide but, I believe his most incredible achievement was doing all of this with no college degree which by today’s standards would be near impossible. This has affected my own choice in career because I see the great amount of potential someone can have in the computer engineering world by being good at the profession. The research on him has also shown me the great impact one can have on millions of people through software’s and computers. Thanks to the wealth he has established, he has given back to his community through his donations in charities as well as investing in students with potential through his scholarship, the Gates Millennium
Scholarship. Overall, Gates is not only an influential figure in our world but has proven to do so through hard work. He stuck to what he knew which was computers and software instead of following a career that his parents had set out for him. I think many of us just follow certain career paths to please those around us but we don’t listen to what we want ourselves which is something Gates did and was successful. Being as he was a business man as well as an engineer and he was self-taught makes this an incredible thing to do. This is why I think Bill Gates is one of the most influential men in computer engineering/programming in the 20th century. His legacy will keep sparking the minds of future generations to come which one day will prove to be just as great as he is.
...same level of access? Why was Gates ultimately more experienced and successful than any of them? Gates said it was his “obsession” (52). He had a passion for computers and programming that drove him to sneak out at night and put in those long hours necessary to become an expert.
Kevin Gates is a visionary with a talent to express his emotion and thoughts . Making art with his words and showing truth through his struggle. So before you just assume that he's a rapper who promotes gangs, violence , and drugs . Ask yourself, what do you see outside ?
As a person who enjoys “stuff” you may be like me and think this lesson should more about do as I say and less about what I really do.
Horatio Gates was born on July 26th, 1727 in Maldon, England. A military man from a young age, he served as a lieutenant in the British Army and then later served as a captain during the French and Indian War, where he fought in the North American campaign. Though he would return to his native England following the conclusion of the war, he sympathized with the restive colonial protests against the British government in the following years resulting from the high taxes imposed on the colonies to pay for their defense. Gates eventually moved to Virginia in 1772 not long before the break out of the American Revolutionary War, where he was appointed an officer in the Continental Army. Warren characterizes gates as “an officer of bravery, punctuality, and a nice sense of military honor, but with the fine feelings of humanity, and the delicacy of the gentleman” (2009, p. 240).
Henry Louis Gates Jr. was born in 16th September, 1950, in West Virginia, Keyser. He studied and traveled globally before he became department head in African-American studies, at Harvard University. Henry Gates is an acclaimed critic and author who has disclosed a wide range of literary gems. He is an educator, an American literary critic, a writer, a scholar, as well as an editor. Henry was the first black person to be offered a fellowship by the Mellon Foundation. On top of that, he has received several honorary awards and degrees for his research, development, and teaching of academic institutions to learn the black culture (Dorman 135). Gates was chosen, in 2012, to offer the Jefferson Lecture. In addition, this was done for the purpose of acknowledging his eminent intellectual achievements in humanities. On the other hand, he has hosted many PBS television miseries inclusive of the travel and history program, Finding Your Roots (2012), the African American Lives, and many others. Henry sits on several arts, research and cultural institutions boards. He serves in Harvard University as the Alphonse Professor whereby he is W. E. B. director (Dorman136-137). This essay explores the history and achievement of Henry Louis Gates Jr.
I have known and heard about Dr. William Gates, who is also known as the World’s entrepreneur Bill Gates. Personally, I am inspired by Dr. Gates’ personal accomplishments as well as his efforts to positively impact the lives of many people. His generous donations have helped and saved many people suffering infectious diseases. I have been greatly influenced by his commencement speech as he graduated with an honorary doctorate at Harvard University in 2007. In his speech, Dr. Gates not only was to commence on the graduates, but also to bring awareness to the audience of the World’s existing problems. He appropriately brought up the issue of inequities during the commencement because as the speech was for the graduates, Mr. Gates believed these people are more capable of making the changes for the world. These people are about to start their life journey, thus it is important for them to see the issues lying ahead to make positive impact for the future.
but it had no OS (Operating System). So Bill and Paul Alan set out to
Gladwell frequently states that people are a product of the factors around them. One such factor is the amount of time a person dedicates towards a particular skill, craft, art, or activity, and the time required to be the best in a particular field is 10,000 hours. Bill Gates, having a net worth of approximately 90 billion dollars, is generally considered an epitome of success. Gladwell provides precise details about how Gates was able to become a pioneer. Gates gained a head start in the field of computing with access to “real-time programming as an eighth grader in 1968 (Gladwell 51).” In addition, Gladwell explains that a crucial aspect of Gates’ success was that he attended Lakeside School, one of the only high schools in the late ‘60s which has access to a time-sharing terminal. Gates also came from a family that
On October 28, 1955 William H. Gates III (nicknamed "trey") was born in Seattle. His father was a lawyer (William H. Gates II) and his mother was a schoolteacher. He also had two older sisters who were in high school when Bill was born. Bill attended a public elementary school before he moved to a private school in North Seattle named Lakeside. Lakeside's strong academics enabled Bill to actively get involved with computers (which were the love of his life next to baseball) and use his superior intellect. This was the beginning of a long and successful career in computers. Bill combined his intellect and visions of technology along with his active participation in may charities to make our world a better place.
When most people hear about Bill Gates the first thing that comes to mind is the obscene amount of money he has made through out his career. Owning many different foundations, the most common foundation known to most college students is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that provide many different scholarships. However, this foundation also does various things to give back to communities and aiding suffering countries. Within this foundation there are also various branches such as the United States Program, The Global Development Program and the Global health program that have grown over time making the Gates a commonly used household name.
His fortunate life started after Gates enrolled in the Lakeside Preparatory School at the age of twelve. “At the age of thirteen Gates began writing his first computer programs and that is when he became friends with Paul Allen.”(Stevenson). While attending Lakeside, Gates and Allen received unlimited use of the facility 's machines like the use of schools computers. The school would let Gates write the schools program for scheduling students in classes and he would take advantage of that to have the people he wanted to be in his classes. In 1972, after graduating from Lakeside, Bill Gates attended Harvard College. Originally Gates was expected to study law
A modern parking lot has one of the most crucial aspects which are now necessary in car parks worldwide, the presence of a boom gate, the requirement arose as a safety measure after the notorious reputation of robberies in car parks around the world, the new system allowed for a better safety mechanism as well as a god way of controlling the flow of traffic to and from a parking lot or into an estate, the boom gates are operated by electricity and can be opened by security personnel to grant access.
After completing their second year of college Gates and Allen had decided to make their own software company. They started out with Micro-Soft as the first name of the company but later took the hyphen. Gates had soon went back to school at harvard however he dropped out in 1977 before he graduated. On his time out he soon devoted himself to Microsoft and made it his full-time Job. This would help him find the problems and fix them. It would make the company a lot stronger and better. “In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, two young computer hobbyists from Palo Alto, California, unveiled the prototype for the Apple 1 computer. A local computer dealer saw the Apple 1 and ordered 100 pre-assembled units. Over the next 10 months, about 200 Apple 1’s were sold.” (Musolf).
Gates, along with his friend, Paul Allen , used to spend hours in front of the computer. Sometimes he spent the whole day in the computer room reading computer books and magazines and developing computer programs. Gates was so obsessed with the computer that he often missed his classes and never did his homework on time.
Bill gates also pursues a number of philanthropic causes, donating large amounts of money to charities as well as organizations.
