In this online blog entry, Elizabeth Landau claims that bilingualism can be very beneficial to one’s cognitive abilities. Her first sub-claim is that bilinguals retain better cognitive function as the body grows older. The grounds for this sub-claim is a reference to Ellen Bialystok’s study on Alzheimer’s patients revealing that bilinguals were several years older than monolinguals at similar phases of neurological impairment. The findings from this study support Landau’s main claim because it shows that bilinguals’ cognitive abilities regressed at a much slower pace than those of monolinguals’. The work of Bialystok is credible since she is affiliated with York University in Toronto, Ontario, and the research that Landau refers to in this blog entry are all from presentations at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. Landau’s second sub-claim is that bilinguals are better at multitasking. She supports this sub-claim with Judith Kroll’s research that has found bilinguals better suited to multitasking because of their heightened attention skills. This is most likely because bilinguals are perpetually inhibiting one language in favor of the other, which gives them an enhanced ability to tune out irrelevant information. Once again, these grounds are credible and scholarly because Judith Kroll is a researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and like Bialystok, Kroll presented these findings at the annual conference. For Noah, his world forced him to be monolingual despite being raised by multilingual parents. The credibility of this source is questioned since a comedian’s job is to make the audience laugh, not necessarily to tell the truth. It would help if these stories came from a biographical source to see if they are factual. The stories may be suspicious but the ideas presented in his performance are reasonable and not farfetched. More than anything, this primary source gives me a more personal account of the impact of language. I intend to use this source with de Houwer’s to show how raising a bilingual child is much easier and effective than letting one search for his or her identity as a grown man.

Nagy (2013) makes an attempt, through a case study and the use of previous studies, to test the theories of prominent researchers on the field such as Francois Grosjean (2011), Ellen Bilyastok (2010) and Jurgen Meisel (1994). Nagy (2013) notes in her case study that bilingual development is depending on environmental influence just as much as on the child’s individual aptitude and general intelligence.
A team of AAVE and AE experts collaborated in an effort to identify and evaluate how the use of phonological processing occurs in both African American and Caucasian children and determine the implications for phonological reading instructions in classrooms. The study used varying phonological constants and variables and ultimately concluded that AE students performed better than AAVE students as the instructions for the study were written in AE-related language. Educators and scholars believed that the results of this study necessitated further discussion as the impact and implications for phonological reading instruction is expected to be fair to all children (Sligh, Frances, and Connors, 2003).
Bilingualism is the ability to communicate and write in both of Canada’s official languages, English, and French. In addition, 72 percent of Canadians supported English-French bilingualism which is as a part of Canadian culture(Baluja and Bradshaw, June 22, 2012). The reason why, in Canada, bilingualism was adopted owes to its status as a colony. Over time immigrants came to use the dominant language, which was English. With the defeat of France, England and English became the dominant power. As a result, the Royal commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism was made in the 1960’s. Most products and advertisements are labeled by the commission roles along with guaranteed access to service(See, 2011). Bilingualism is one of the parts of linguistic history and identity and has an economic advantage for Canadians.
The linguistic and cultural clashes that children encounter, and how they negotiate between their ethnic and American “mainstream” cultures, and how these clashes and problems influence their relationship with their parents and their ethnic identities as a whole and how they were dealt with differently as we look at two stories dealing with two girls who are both coming of age in different society from where they originally came from. Jairy’s Jargon a story written by Carmen-Gloria Ballista, is a story that encounters the life of a young girl coming of age in Puerto Rico, except she’s originally from New York. Milly Cepeda’s story, Mari y Lissy, is a story about twin sisters who differ in personality and are often at odds with each other, but are both learning to live in a city that is very different from where they came from.
The author Maria de la Luz Reyes explains through several characters born and raised in a family that spoke different native languages but he managed to excel in learning English. Biliteracy refers to the ability to communicate and write more than one language and this represents a major achievement because it takes a lot of sacrifice and dedication to realize it. For decades, education has been one of the most important aspects of life. Because education has always been around, it has unintentionally changed over time. These changes have been the result of various historic and legislative events that have occurred throughout the years. After taking a closer look at the history of bilingual education, I have selected a handful of events that, in my opinion, led to drastic changes and greatly impacted bilingual students.
Being bilingual always made my life differ as if I lived two lives, speaking Spanish at home and English everywhere outside of home. On the daily basis at my house, my family speaks Spanish. When we communicate we speak very fast, at times we can not even understand one another. After this occurs we all burst out in laughter super loud, no boundaries are enforced in our lexicon. The enforcement changes when entering a different discourse community.
Out of all the American institutions that exist today, the educational system has one of the greatest impacts on the lives of people, especially for immigrants and their children who do not know how to speak English. The English language is a whole new, different perspective for people who come to America for the first time; their whole environment changes as well. The majority of the people who come to the United States are Hispanics, who are usually at the poverty level. Like everyone who come to America, they want to pursue a better quality of life, and in order to do that, you have to know how to speak the universal language, the English language. The myth of education here is that everyone can learn the same way through the English language—but that is not the case.
Being bilingual implies a process in which everything looks so difficult at the beginning, but at the same time it is easier than what it looks like.
There have been many claims, but it seems that there are six principal areas where the bilingual brain benefits. Those are learning in general, complex thinking, creativity, mental flexibility, and interpersonal communication skills. The development of the brain of a bilingual individual is better than a monolingual individual.
