In the iconic book “The Hobbit” written by J.R.R. Tolkien the main character Bilbo Baggins goes through an epic quest that changes him from a coward to a hero. He starts out as a regular human or otherwise called a hobbit just living at home. Fate and destiny changed him when he went on the quest with the dwarves. Every hero starts somewhere where they were normal or just a regular human being; something happens to change how they act and want to save citizens. Bilbo definitely isn’t the strongest, bravest, or smartest. He figured out how to cope without the heroic traits and saved the whole party that are on the quest. The thing that helped him the most is when he found this magical ring that turned him invisible. He realized that the monster couldn’t see him so he overcame his fears to save his friends or get out of trouble numerous times. Magic always comes with a price; Bilbo didn’t know that at the time but even though the ring helped him become a better him; it was slowly hurting him from the inside out. If Bilbo wasn’t picked for this epic quest, he wouldn’t have discovered this whole other side of himself. The braver, smartest, and more courageous self. Without the quest and his new found friends, Bilbo would be just a normal hobbit, that doesn’t take a risk in his everyday life. Bilbo isn’t a knight in shining …show more content…
armor, he is a commoner but somehow he went through that life changing journey to become a knight in shining armor. In the book you see Bilbo start out always hiding in the back when they met a foe on the road. As he starts to understand that if you don’t fight for your life you could loose it. When he finally decides to break free and starts to fight alongside his friends is when he got left behind in the misty mountains. Bilbo understands that his friends wont come back and he has to fight if he wants to get out and go on with the quest. With the little help of that magical ring, the old Bilbo is left behind in the mountains and the new Bilbo emerges. He gets new respect from his friends, he can help them in times of need, and when the quest is over he can go home a new hobbit. The dwarves that when they left Bilbo in the mountains that there was a good chance that wouldn’t have seen him again but they are surprised when Bilbo appears out of nowhere. The dwarves don’t quite know what to recall of this new Bilbo, that is quicker, sneaker, and more brave. When the dwarves finally understand that Bilbo has changed is when the dwarves are captured by spiders in Mirkwood. They knew there was no hope; they had failed their quest and won’t reclaim their home in the lonely mountain. Bilbo appears out of thin air and saves them all. He also has the spiders chase him so the dwarves could get to safety. That takes a lot of bravery to sacrifice yourself so your friends can be saved and continue on. One thing you notice about Bilbo is that when he did save his friends he didn’t brag about how amazing he is. He still stays behind the group and stays quiet. He takes the praise from the dwarves but he doesn’t get cocky about what he can do or what he did. He knows the ring is something bad. He can feel the shadows and the dark magic laced into the metal band. Bilbo realizes if does brag about he can do with the ring someone might get jealous and take it from him. He noticed that the creature he fought in the misty mountains that was named Gollum owned the ring before he found. Gollum was nothing but skin and bones; he was a shell of his former self. He was being eaten alive by the dark magic in the ring. Bilbo didn’t want that to happen to him, but the ring made him a hero. Something he always wanted to be since his ancestors were mighty heroes. Bilbo’s destiny before he went on the quest was to live a risk free life. A very long, happy life; but one faithful day a wizard brought his something that will forever change how Bilbo is looked at by his friends and family. When and if Bilbo returns from this quest; his friends might look at him different.
Like they might think he is crazy because they didn’t hear of what happened in the far north. The people he thought were friends might not be because Bilbo changed. He is more self confident, rougher around the edges, and will talk about unspeakable things. Bilbo will lose some of his shire friends but will gain new friends from a far away place. Many of his old friend’s won’t believe him when he tells them of what he has done and how he became an epic hero. They might just laugh at him and tell him that he has to much to drink or he’s inhaled to much tobacco
smoke. Bilbo isn’t a typical modern day hero. Most people think of heroes of people that can fly or has super strength. Bilbo doesn’t have any of that but he is strong and did save many people from their untimely death. Bilbo is just someone who got lucky enough to be in the place at the place. He adapted to his surroundings and was to help his friends when they needed him most. Bilbo will go on many more journeys, but this is one that he will always remember because this quest is the one that made him better. He was to actually help without hiding, cowering, and being a scared person. He grew and not only changed his fate but also changed the fate of his friends and the world.
In the beginning, Bilbo is very abject to go on this adventure. “Don’t be a fool, Bilbo Baggins!” He said to himself, “Thinking of dragons and all that outlandish nonsense...”
He went from being a reluctant hero to an epic hero just from a few slight changes. Bilbo was almost forced out the door to begin his journey with the dwarves by Gandalf. He did not want to go on the journey and certainly did not feel the need to be a hero, although he reluctantly ended up being one in the book. In the movie, on the other hand, he had many opportunities to become the hero and he took these opportunities, becoming an epic hero. While change can greatly impact some things, it can also take away from important pieces of the
Bilbo Baggins lived a very simple life, a life he enjoyed very much, until the day when the wizard Gandalf arrived at his door one morning. Gandalf was searching for someone to share an adventure with, but Bilbo quickly declined, saying, “We don’t want any adventures here. You might try over The Hill or across The Water,” and with that the hobbit dismissed the wandering wizard, but not before he had given the wizard an invitation for tea the next day. This of coarse, was the polite thing to do. But Gandalf saw something more in Bilbo and would not be discouraged.
Bilbo cleverly eluded Smaug’s temptation, spared the life of foul creature Gollum, and demonstrate courage more and more throughout his journey. These exquisite traits made Bilbo into the revered character that was loved and respected for generations of readers. Throughout the book, Bilbo’s character had changed. At first, he was the ordinary hobbit who described adventures as “Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things” (4) but by the end of his journeys stated to Thorin, “I am glad that I have shared in your perils” (290). Bilbo’s ability to fight evil, make new friends, and to look beyond his maps and books enable him to become a hero. As Gandalf once said at the very beginning, “There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself” (19). Gandalf was right. What appeared to be an uneasy hobbit who fainted at the thought of adventures, turned out to be a brave leader, a compassionate friend, and an inspiring
It is shown that this story can convey a strong message that all readers should know. That when you believe in yourself that you could accomplish things that were only in your wildest dreams. Bilbo Baggins had been the one to overcome his fear of changing his daily life and become the hero that he should be known for. Even though he starts off as the most non-courageous person in the world into a great hero. He goes one to defeat spiders, goblins, and outsmarts doby into getting the ring.
Within J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Tolkien uses the character of Bilbo Baggins to reveal to the reader the constant struggle between heroic and anti-heroic qualities within Bilbo and ourselves.
Bilbo Baggins undergoes a hero’s journey in The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. He departs from his home, is initiated into a more mature mindset, undergoes a road of trials, goes through his innermost cave, and is returned home and reintegrated into society. Bilbo’s journey is also a quest for self identity, because he realizes his place as “quite a little fellow in a wide world” and learns to balance out his respectable Baggins heritage with his adventurous Took background (Tolkien
Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. In the beginning he is a small peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order, and hates things that are disorganized. “Please be careful,” and “Please don’t trouble. I can manage” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the very begging he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, main, and he is still the protagonist. By the end of the story, Bilbo is a changed Hobbit.
...s. Bilbo is the one that gives the precious Arkenstone to Bard to help stop a war from starting. If it was not for Bilbo’s courage, Thorin would still be fighting for the Arkenstone and might have also been hurt. Bilbo also helps the dwarves by being a good leader and helping them find a way out of Smaug’s lair. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not have the audacity to try finding a way out of Smaug’s cave. Bilbo, like a real hero, always makes sure that he finishes the task he sets out to do. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not be able to finish all the tasks that they want to finish. Bilbo is also the reason why the dwarves are still alive. Bilbo saves the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters range from the spiders to Smaug. Through good or bad, Bilbo has been able to show the characteristics that a real hero should be able to show.
Finally, as the novel is coming to an end, it is apparent how much Bilbo Baggins has changed throughout The Hobbit. In the introduction of the book, Tolkien displays Bilbo as a fearful creature afraid to follow his Took roots. As the book continues, Bilbo sees things that change him and make him a stronger hobbit than the old Bilbo. By the end of the book, Mr. Baggins finally gained his well earned respect and found out that being an adventurer is not an awful thing to be. So, it seems as if the theme of change in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien was shown through Bilbo’s character.
Bilbo assumes that he is an inadequate companion for the adventure, and that idea is apparent as he and the dwarves equally doubt his skills that Gandalf is so confident about. " 'I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for you...There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. '" (Tolkien 33) The dwarves allow Bilbo to join their company, but they do not completely take Gandalf 's word and have a difficult time becoming accustomed to the hobbit. The party describes him during the journey as being "more trouble than use so far" and wished Gandalf had "chosen someone with more sense" (119). However, once they realize that in spite of how traumatic a situation is for Bilbo, he still finds a way to help them when they can 't defend themselves, and because of that they accept him as a friend and stay loyal to him until the end of the quest and the
...y a little fellow, Gandalf hints that even he was impressed by the large role Bilbo played in their journey, adding irony to the theme of heroism. Bilbo was the perfect character for Tolkien to express the theme of heroism because he was just the average, everyday character with a kind heart. He wasn’t some wizard or renowned warrior, but a hobbit, a simple hobbit who didn’t ask for heroism. Bilbo would much rather stay in the quite of his own home, but fate would have him do much more, even though Bilbo wouldn’t say so himself, he was indeed…a hero.
...ting points of the plot also relied on Bilbo’s courage. If Bilbo did not have such a valuable trait, the story of the Hobbit would’ve been fairly short.
He remains good hearted throughout the story. At the beginning of the novel Bilbo is neither an adventurous nor brave hobbit. He prefers to stay in his hobbit hole and keep to himself, he is scared of the outside world. When Gandalf comes and says “he is looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it 's very difficult to find anyone.” he immediately shoots the offer down saying “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!”(9). Gandalf though saw Bilbo and knew that there was something special inside of him. So, he pushed him out the door where Bilbo would be able to grow. Although Bilbo refuses at first he builds up the courage. Thorin Oakenshield saw Bilbo as small and worthless. Bilbo, at the time, agreed with him. Eventually Bilbo saved his life and Thorin became family to him. Throughout Bilbo 's adventure he goes from being unheroic to courageous and heroic. One example is when he fight off the Great Spider to save the dwarves with the sword he names sting and says that he feels more confident and fierce, from there on he progresses to become stronger and at the end Gandalf says to Bilbo,"Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were."(203). From that you can tell that Gandalf has seen the changes, most of the changes come from the ways he saves
Bilbo doesn’t realize it at first, with the help of Gandalf he sees he has changed. He has become brave and fearless. He has also learned the value of friendship and kindness through his new friends and their journey together which has now forever
