In life, a family can sway close ones to have more than one personality. This different side can make anybody do things they don’t normally do. Just like in, The Hobbit, Where you can see the personality differences between the adventurous, Took side of the family. Then the Boring Baggins element of the character, Bilbo Baggins. Three times Bilbo has changed from one nature to another is when, he chooses to take part in the adventure to the Misty Mountains, when Bilbo attempted to steal from the trolls, and when he makes the daring decision to escape the goblins cave.
Bilbo really exhibited his Took side in chapter one when he made an agreement to go on an adventure to the Misty Mountains. In chapter one a very strange occurrence happened where thirteen dwarves showed up at Bilbo Baggins hobbit hole. Then, after a while the dwarves started singing this beautiful tune about the Misty Mountains and Gold. During this something stirred up in Bilbo, he started to change in jurassic ways. Bilbo wanted to see the mountains after this tune, which meant the Baggins side had left. I know this because the Baggins side would have rejected an offer to take part in a journey to the Mountains ten times out of ten and just stay home. Saying this, a different side of him would have

to come out of him to accept a deal like this. Adding on to this information, Bilbo stayed on the daring track when he tried to use his burglary skills to steal from the all so intimidating trolls.
This deathifying task happened in chapter 2 when Bilbo was trying to get some food for the group, he attempted this task because hobbits are known for being very quiet maneuvering. Now even though it seems like this is normal for the average hobbit, it is completely abnormal for Bilbo. The reason it is this way is because, Bilbo was a hobbit who never had an encounter like this with a troll, and never wanted to until that very moment. This would mean, he would have to be on his daring Took side to make the decision try to steal from a group of
trolls, Furthermore, Bilbo proved to the audience he has two sides to him when he escaped the cave. This proved to me Bilbo has two sides to him because JRR Tolkien states, “Bilbo, and forgetting to draw his sword he stuck his hands in his pockets. And there was the ring still, in his left pocket, and slipped it on his finger.” The Baggins side of Bilbo would have gave up and just rotted in the cave, but this Took Bilbo had other plans in mind. When a person has their moments they can act foreign to their close ones. Bilbo Baggins takes this theory to the max in, The Hobbit, when he lets out his Took side in crucial moments. This all started when he made the questionable decision to take a trip to the mountains. It is also shown clearly to the reader twice more when Bilbo tried to steal from the trolls, and when he escaped the goblins cave.
The first time Bilbo exposed his hidden sense of adventure was early in the trip when he encountered a group of trolls. Bilbo was sent by the dwarves to investigate a strange fire in a forest, and
Bilbo cleverly eluded Smaug’s temptation, spared the life of foul creature Gollum, and demonstrate courage more and more throughout his journey. These exquisite traits made Bilbo into the revered character that was loved and respected for generations of readers. Throughout the book, Bilbo’s character had changed. At first, he was the ordinary hobbit who described adventures as “Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things” (4) but by the end of his journeys stated to Thorin, “I am glad that I have shared in your perils” (290). Bilbo’s ability to fight evil, make new friends, and to look beyond his maps and books enable him to become a hero. As Gandalf once said at the very beginning, “There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself” (19). Gandalf was right. He starts off as a hobbit scared of the world and never wanting change in his life to ever become a great hero and adventurer. As he starts off his great journey he showed change for the first time and that he is willing to risk his life. As Bilbo embarks on this journey and continues helping the dwarves many traits form from this experience such as bravely as he stood up to the trolls. Within J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Tolkien uses the character of Bilbo Baggins to reveal to the reader the constant struggle between heroic and anti-heroic qualities within Bilbo and ourselves.
At the beginning of the novel, Mr. Baggins starts out at his comfy little hobbit home, but suddenly a grand, wise wizard shows up. Not long after, 12 dwarves began to appear, one by one at Bilbo’s door, and they have come to carry him off on a life-changing adventure, full of greed. That was the beginning of our hairy hobbit’s transformation from a shy, quiet hobbit, to a strong and bold life-saving hero, who enchants any who come in contact with him. For example of his strength and boldness, would be in chapter 5, when Bilbo rhymes riddles for an unknown creature, who calls itself Gollum. Bilbo would’ve been eaten if he were to have lost, but took his chances, and risked it anyway. After all, it did get him out of that goblin-infested cave.
Although Bilbo’s character has changed and become more Tookish in many ways, he remains “only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all” (Tolkien 363). Bilbo is happy to visit the elves and have tea with Gandalf, but he is also just as happy to relax in his hobbit-hole and enjoy the comforts of home that he longed for so much on his journey.
The Hobbit, Bilbo went with Gandalf. He was brave because he was part Turk. He wanted to find out if their was any Turk still left in him, He realized his strength, he was kind even though they came to his house without asking and tore up his house. Gandalf saw something in Bilbo and no one else saw potential in him. He wanted to show them that he was strong and that he was not only a Baggins, but a Turk as well. That's why he signed the
The first scene when Bilbo starts to change is in chapter two, Roast Mutton. He is sent to check out a light probably caused by a fire and report back if it is safe. He then goes to the site and sees three figures. He figures out that they are Trolls! They are roasting mutton over an open fire. Bilbo then sees a wallet. The wallet is humongous. Bilbo thinks the dwarves would be so proud if he pick pocketed it. So, he went over to it and took it. The Trolls then notice him and then get angry. Then Gandalf and the dwarves come to the rescue. He successfully got the wallet, but almost got killed for it.
Bilbo was a hobbit that didn’t do very much, but when Gandalf comes to ask him to go on an adventure he didn’t know if he wanted to go. When bilbo says that he’ll do it he seems to be a little shaky at first, but as the book keeps going bilbo gets braver, and saves the dwarves from danger on the way to the Lonely Mountain. Throughout Bilbo’s metamorphosis journey, he undergoes many dangers on his path that changes him to become more cunning and courageous. When Bilbo confronted Smaug, he was more prepared. This was especially evident after he was able to make the creature Gollum feel baffled by challenging him with a harder riddle question using his devious skills. When Bilbo heard Smaug snoring whilst he was bravely walking down the tunnel alone, he realized “Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait” (Tolkien, 260). This quote emphasizes how challenging it felt for Bilbo to find the courage to continue. This was particularly because Bilbo was unsure of the danger that laid ahead of him, but he had certainly realized that it was there and coming. Finally, as the novel is coming to an end, it is apparent how much Bilbo Baggins has changed throughout The Hobbit. In the introduction of the book, Tolkien displays Bilbo as a fearful creature afraid to follow his Took roots. As the book continues, Bilbo sees things that change him and make him a stronger hobbit than the old Bilbo. By the end of the book, Mr. Baggins finally gained his well earned respect and found out that being an adventurer is not an awful thing to be. So, it seems as if the theme of change in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien was shown through Bilbo’s character.
Bilbo begins his long journey with the dwarves, who at the time were still skeptical of Bilbo’s abilities. The dwarves didn’t see why they needed such a small incompetent hobbit with them along their journey. Gandalf tells them to stop complaining and to trust that there is more to Bilbo than meets the eye (Tolkien 6). Bilbo soon shows his courage and heroism for the first time in the story when they run into their first obstacle, three large trolls huddled around a campfire. Bilbo, who was once a shy, non-adventurous type, begins to develop into a hero as he tries to steal one of the trolls’ money purses. Bilbo doesn’t realize it at first, with the help of Gandalf he sees he has changed. He has become brave and fearless. He has also learned the value of friendship and kindness through his new friends and their journey together which has now forever
He develops a lot during the book and turns into the hero that Tolkien created. Two examples from the book that support the theme are when he defeats the spiders of Mirkwood his character develops more like being fierce and aggressive also when he saved his friends from the spiders he changed from just worrying about himself into caring about the dwarves and Thorin. Some symbolism is Bilbo naming his short sword Sting after killing the spider it symbolizes his
