What is a hobbit? J.R.R Tolkien who wrote The Hobbit describes them as a short, human like creature with no magical powers. A normal hobbit enjoys simple things such as a healthy breakfast and an unadventurous life. They are beardless with big bellies and leathery hairy feet. Bilbo Baggins, one of the main characters, is a well to do hobbit. He is about fifty years old and happily lives in his well put together hobbit hole. He is brought along in the adventure with a very important role as the “burglar”.

Bilbo Baggins can be described as nervous and sometimes cowardly. His nervousness and lack of adventure often find him dreaming of his home. For example, bilbo was wishing to be in front of his fire eating breakfast in his warm hobbit hole (pg. 38). Despite these poor qualities bilbo is a clever hobbit. When he ran out of riddles to save his life, he asked gollum a simple question “What have I got in my pocket?” (Pg. 92). Even though the question was an accident he was smart enough to play along when Gollum thought it was his riddle. It was quick thinking. …show more content…

After the dwarves try to help, Bilbo runs and hides behind the trees where his friends get captured one by one by the trolls. If Gandalf hadn't come to the rescue they all would of been roasted over the fire. In later chapters after he escapes Gollum and the goblins with his invisibility ring, he finds some courage to go back and be willing to save his friends this time. (pg. 106) Bilbo is becoming
