Before there was modern-day medicine and “Big Pharma” with it’s bounty of synthetic drugs, there were plants, and the ancient peoples knew how to use them to treat common ailments and even life-threatening diseases.
There is an ancient Egyptian scroll called the Ebers Papyrus that is over 100 pages long and details 700 medicinal herbs and how to use them. Knowledge of herbal medicine was passed down from one generation to the next until the early 20th century. The woman of the house knew how to use herbs for healing, and would act as the family's physician. She would treat illnesses and make tonics for ailments. The knowledge of how to use medicinal plants in everyday life has largely been lost in the US. The same plants in modern times are generally not looked to for the treatment in many ailments, but instead for flavoring our food. Most modern people may not understand what those plants were used for in years past, but the fact that they are still in our diets by way of herbs and spices indicates that we subconsciously know that there are great uses for them. In conclusion, herbal medicines have been around for a long time. Plenty of our drugs have ingredients from herbs and are still being used today. I would not recommend the use of herbal medicines due to complications it can have on the body unless the physician suggested the product. The more I read up on these herbal medicines the more precautions I came across. I believe these herbal medicines should be reviewed as a drug under the FDA to avoid any health complications for these
