Michael Warner popularized Heteronormativity in 1991 and the overall concept was in Gayle Rublin’s notion of the “sex/gender system”. Heteronormativity refers to the lifestyle norm, which asserts that people fit into complementary genders (Man and woman) with natural roles in life. Heteronormativity believes that there is only one type of marriage, which is the marriage between those of opposite sex (Heterosexual relationship). The idea of heteronormativity, excludes homosexuals, transgender, and intersex individuals. Heteronormativity also defines gender roles and sets a “standard” for what is considered normal within society. With this viewpoint, there is much tension that occurs as a result between those who are viewed as “normal” and those who are not.
Heteronormativity effects daily life in the sense that there are gendered roles and ideas. For example, a man is supposed to be masculine and work with his hands while a woman is supposed to be feminine and take care of the children. Recently, there has been an effort to change gender roles and allow for those who identify as transgender to have their own restrooms; previously the group was forced to choose a specific bathroom to use even if they did not agree to the gender of the restroom. Heteronormativity also effects education. The idea of a “normal” and opposite sex marriage is often taught in sexual education courses throughout the country. The teaching of other views such as same sex marriages and what is not necessarily socially viewed as normal has not begun in much of the curriculum. The opposite of heteronormativity can be viewed as a place or society that views those who are homosexual as normal. An example of a place can be a gay bar or club that encourages same sex relations. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT) are strong proponents of anti-heteronormativity.
Overall, the concept of Heteronormativity is flawed. Heteronormativity is the cultural bias that favors and views opposite sex marriages (heterosexual marriages) as what is “normal”. Since normalcy is a socially defined concept, there is often a debate as to what is exactly “normal” the views of people vary on what is defined as “normal”. However, recently what is viewed as “normal” is beginning to change and perhaps in the future we (society) will not have a set view of what is “normal”.
Aaron Devor’s essay “Becoming Members of Society: Learning the Social Meanings of Gender” describes how despite popular belief, gender and sex are not directly related and how social norms affect individual’s choice of gender. Devor‘s main argument is that gender is not determined by genitalia, but instead by the individual's own choices. Michael Kimmel’s essay “Masculinity as Homophobia” claims that gender equality is a positive thing for males and that social norms force men to act a certain way. Kimmel’s main argument is that men are always having to protect their masculinity in order to prevent themselves from appearing weak. Both authors present compelling arguments for both gender equality and for how social norms influence individuals’ gender choice. However, the two authors approach the same topic in different ways. Kimmel takes a more laid-back approach to the topic by using simple words and a conversational tone that relates to the casual gender sociologist. Devor writes a more sophisticated essay using complex terms and a more formal tone that relates to the serious sociologist that research gender studies.
For the majority of human history marriage was always thought to be between one man and one woman. That was, until last year when the Supreme Court passed a law, legalizing gay marriage. Many people still do not support marriage, but people’s changing ideas of what defines a marriage made the legalization of gay marriage happen. This issue can also be applied to the Functional Analysis theory. Those with this perspective may believe marriage should only be between a man and woman, because each brings different skills to the home. A gay marriage and home could be viewed as unstable, because without a man in the home it may be difficult to do extensive heavy lifting and without a woman in the home it may be difficult to do housework like sewing. Functional Analysis may believe that gay marriage threatens the balance in the home which will in turn affect other aspects of life like childcare, cooking, housekeeping, etc. Sociologist who believes in the Conflict Theory perspective may think that gay marriage developed as a result of several people protesting to lawmakers that gay marriage should be legalized. By analyzing my very own personal investment in the idea that heterosexuality is normal, I have realized that I am currently and that I used to deliberately present myself in a heterosexual persona to the world at large. Personally, when I was young, I used to be uncomfortable with women who broke the social norms of heteronormativity in public. I remember feeling anxious, and believing that one day soon society would perceive me as a divergent towards the norms because I hang out with women who didn’t present a heterosexual persona. In my opinion, only after we learn to respect all kinds of differences out of majority we are able to have liberal minds, which makes the world a better place to live for all people. That is the reason I decided to write my paper on compulsory heterosexuality. To come to main idea, my arguement will be dominantly on heteronormativity. I will try to prove that both heteronormativity and gender are social constructs, which means that they are all learned behaviours by society through culture, tradition and religion. I will show a world where any norms and taboos exist, to turn our origins of nature. I will support my arguement by the works of writers and researchers on that topic. My whole effort will be on to claim that there is nothing called heteronormativity by nature, it can not be. We can not rule out the genes and instinct behaviour of people. It is just a coverage, to live in a reproductive and moral society.

In reality, gender is not based on one’s genetic make-up or their reproductive organs. Expanding on this, an individual does not have any control over their assigned gender, but everyone has a gender identity, which is one’s internal sense of being male or female. From a sociocultural perspective, gender roles have the greatest influence on gender as a social construction. Gender roles are the attitudes, behaviors, rights, and responsibilities that particular cultural groups associate with each sex.
