Big City Dangers
Since the industrial revolution the world has witnessed the rapid expansion of its metropolises. For years humans have been flocking to these urban centers in search of jobs, commodities, entertainment and other phenomena that can commonly be found in cities. With this grand, not so new invention which most of us exploit, one must wonder what negative effects city living might have on our health. When populations of animals are clustered together certain dangers arise that threaten the well being of each organism. Notably in China, Japan, India and the United States which contain extensive cities humans battle the health risks that come along them. One such well-known city in the USA which has documented and studied the biological threats to its inhabitants is New York City.
A press release from the Department of Health is not necessary to let New Yorkers know that their home is hazardous to their health. Walking along any street in Manhattan the average observer can smell car fumes in the air, see the filth in the gutters and occasionally witness a purse-snatching. The potential for catching communicable diseases or being injured in some way is severely heightened in concentrated populations like New York. Some of the alleged pollution problems are water contamination, excessive noise and the presence of smog. Several diseases have spread throughout the city in recent years including the flu, West Nile Virus and meningitis. Another biological contaminant that has been found in NYC recently is Anthrax. This substance being sent through the postal system and other crimes endanger the well being of the citizens of this famous city. Anything from a car accident to an intentional murder or shooting can cause an unnatural death. Additionally, freak occurrences like terrorist attacks can kill or infect populations of people like those in New York City. These factors increase the likelihood that residents of a city will contract a particular disease, suffer from an environmentally caused illness, die in an accident or be the victim of a violent crime. Dangers associated with cities threaten the most basic biological feature that urban, suburban and country humans possess, life.

Today, scientists would likely know about the history of chemistry but not how chemistry has impacted history. Many would not wonder if these molecules go beyond the chemistry concepts that they have learned. For example, would the world have been different if piperine (molecule) present in pepper had not led to the discovery of the United States? The interesting fact is that molecules have and will continue to shape the world today. In this book, the authors explain in detail how 17 specific molecules had a significant impact on the history of the world. On a whole, this book is very intriguing and very suitable for chemistry lovers as well as the general public.
Mexico City adds an estimated one million new residents each year, resulting in one million new aggravates to the city’s already abominable air quality (Collins, 119). Over the span of a generation, Mexico City’s air has gone from being one of the world’s cleanest to one of the world’s most polluted, as well as the most polluted in its country. There are a variety of reasons for the decline in air quality, including factory emissions, suspended particles, vehicles, as well as problematic geographic hindrances. Fortunately, Mexico City is doing a lot in response to the problem, including vehicle control, mass transit improvements, required industry emission reductions, and an investing in research and education programs. Regardless of these actions, however, Mexico City’s air is still significantly affecting the quality of life for its residents, and the city must continue to make changes in order for real progress to occur.
Did you know that underage excessive drinking is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among the teen youth each year? That is about 10 fatalities per day. Imagine you driving back home from a party and had a little too much to drink. Next thing you know, you're whole world is upside down. You're conscious, but can't process anything in. You just see strangers running towards your upside down car, panicked, with phones tight to their ears. Imagine the face on your loved ones when the police show up to their door, with most terrible news a person can give and receive. You didn't know any better. You're an adolescent. Adolescents don't know the risks of drinking and what it can do to their health. The U.S should not lower the drinking age to 18 because it would decrease the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents, it would give teenagers easier access to it, and it would cause damage to the adolescent’s developing brain.
One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. Before chemistry society did not know about elements, they did not know about substances like acids and metal, or the difference between gold and lead. There are many simple things that would remain unknown if chemistry wasn’t as advanced as it is today. Chemistry is important to everyday life, because everything is made of chemicals. Chemistry is outside with the leaves changing colors in the fall. The supplies used to do household chores are made from chemistry. Chemistry is literally in everything from the food you eat to the air you breathe. It’s in your soap, your emotions, and everything you can see or touch.
So pretty much in a nutshell, without chemistry we would be absolutely no where today. Our technology is so ridiculously advanced I don’t see how it could get any more advanced. But yet some how our scientists keep on and on trying to come up with some crazy new invention that is supposed to make our world some type of way better. The way I see it from my point of view, our world can not get any more advanced than it is now. But chemistry still keeps on amazing me and hasn’t failed yet. So I am pretty interested in seeing what in the world chemists are going to be working on for the next big thing. Finally, to sum up this paper, Chemistry makes our world go round. Without it, we would still be sitting in the dark.
