The first volunteer group I am in is Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an amazing community mentor program that I was introduced to by my high school. I get to go every Thursday to Nashport Elementary and spend time with two little sisters, for an hour. When I started this volunteer group I was very nervous; I was worried about whether my littles would like me or if I could even help them. However, once I started, I realized that these little kids just needed someone to care about their day and to listen. I have two littles: one is named Bernadette and the second one is Kylie. These little girls have been through a lot in their lives, so it was very special that they felt comfortable enough to let me be their friend and listen. I did Big Brothers Big Sisters my Junior year, and I am going back to Nashport for my Senior year. I wanted to give back to my community, and maybe I didn’t give back to everyone, but I gave those two girls an outlet and someone to care about them. This type of caring and compassion is …show more content…
I have never felt the kind of love and selflessness that I feel in Ruriteen. We not only talk about our love for God, but we talk about how can we help others and how can we improve our community. The following are some volunteer projects that our Ruriteen group has done: raised money for Pennies for Patients, we made chew toys and blankets for the animal shelter, we help our firefighters with their annual cookout dinner, we give some of the money we raised from fundraisers to cancer survivors in our community, and the list goes on. We want our community to be a safe and happy environment, but if we do not try to give back to the community then it will not be safe and enjoyable for everyone. This group of people are real leaders to everyone at my school and in our area, and that is why I want to be a part of something that can make a
In contrast, according to Barnes, Miller, and McKinnon (2012), mentoring relationships can be more structured and “formal” as a result of being organized though actual agencies verses informal connections where the relationship organically develops, for example with a coach and athlete or teacher and student. A reputable organization known as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS) is a formal mentoring program founded in New York City in 1904. The purpose was to solicit professionals, philanthropists and community leaders to serve as volunteers for the youth engaged in the criminal
During the summer or even on weekends my mom would take me with her to go help out her patients. Which included bathing them, feeding them, and caring for them. Not only did I help my mom with her patients but I would always help rake leaves, pick up trash and make their yard look nice. I can’t even image how they would’ve done all the things I did for them with their fragile bodies. I’m glad I was there for them and made a difference. Aside from helping my mom’s patients. I helped an elderly man who was on fire in his backyard. It was around spring time and I heard someone screaming yelling “help” so I went around to look and there he was on fire. I tried so hard to put out the fire and it felt like mission impossible but I did not give up even though the ambulance were on the way. He was burnt pretty bad, but I was so glad I found him. Who knows it could’ve been worse! He is still alive till this day and sits on his porch waiting for me to pass by his house every morning to say good morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling to know that I not only changed a life but I saved
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. As a hispanic american I have been provided the opportunity of experiencing life from two different viewpoints which has provided me with various life lessons that aided in my development in becoming a successful and well- rounded
I have participated in several volunteer opportunities as a Girl Scout, singing Christmas carols at a local hospital, picking up trash along the beach, working at a homeless shelter, leading events for younger Girl Scouts and much more. These opportunities have influenced me to become aware of the struggles within my
The chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters I chose to research on was the one located closest to me in Orange County. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit organization which brings together underprivileged youth with mentors who are all volunteers, in order to help youth recognize their potential and build productive futures through mentoring and youth development programs. At the end of March the organization opened their new facility in Santa Ana, in order to accommodate a large increase in the number of youth served and better facilitate the very successful programs which continue to grow. The facility is ran by 52 employees,
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. My time at the food bank and Soup Kitchen helped me understand the importance of giving, ...
Big Brothers Big Sisters is important to me because of its positive psychological impacts for each individual. I personally agree that Big Brothers Big Sisters will positively impact each individual involved in the program psychologically. Through the research, I learn that BBBS stresses the importance of human behavior, learning, perception, and emotion for each individual. This pertains to my Psychology 100 class in so many ways because I am able to better understand the concepts behind the psychological impacts that BBBS has to offer.
I learned about the importance of giving back at the age of 11yr old and putting the very important needs of others in front of my own. Volunteering in a homeless shelter at a young age opened my eyes. Where I was placed to give food, clothes, money & hygiene products to people in need. Where would I be right now without the help of God, my mother, family& friends and the church community”. Giving a helping hand to the people in the community is Something we should always do. In the ("bible Acts 20:35 says in everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the lord Jesus himself said: it is more blessed to give than to receive"). Having a compassionate heart for the community blesses the congregation.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) has been around for over 90 years. This organization has supported one-to one relationships with adult volunteers and youths of single-parent homes. The volunteer and the youth makes substantial time and commitment, meeting two to four times per month for a least a year, meeting can last four hours. The Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring helps improve the lives of youth and strongly engages the community through involvement with community leaders. It is recommended that the agency match volunteers to help meet the specific needs of the youth. The agency considers matching such as gender, proximity, and availability. In addition, youth and parents state their match
My school has a program for upperclassmen students to participate in called Big Brothers Big Sisters. It is a program within my school, among many other schools, where high school students get the opportunity to mentor elementary students who may be enrolled into the program for various reasons. Some students who are enrolled may need a friend. Other students need a positive mentor in their lives, or even a role model. Each student placed in the program has their own story of why there are. The only way to find out their story, is to gain their trust and for them to know who you are and feel comfortable enough to open up to you.
Seeing the kids so happy made me feel that I should become more involved in the ministry and start to build personally connections with each kid. After serving at multiple services over the summer I became a regular volunteer. My group leader in the fours and fives group began to give me more responsibilities from leading my small group to taking almost full
A community is a group of people who have a common objective or living in the same environment, going through the same living conditions, or have similar characteristics that bring them together or make them understand each other and develop a strong bond. The community such as the Big Brother Big Sister community influences the society in a good way. The Big Brother Big Sister community has been helping the young people by providing them with mentorship programs. The mentorship programs open the eyes of the young people who are still trying to find themselves and identify what the like. The program helps young individuals see people who have completed their education and others who are pursuing higher education and the get motivated to become like them. The young individuals get role models who help them make important decisions in life such as career selection and encourage them not to be discouraged by the difficult situations the may be going through. The effect this effort has on the society is that many people get to know what they want
I wanted to try something new, and it was more fun that I thought it would be. I got the most well-behaved child which was what I was hoping for. I was looking for a volunteering event that would last more than an hour or two so that I would receive more volunteering hours. Even though it was a long event, I had so much fun that the time went by very fast. I hope that I can find another volunteering activity, maybe something from WACO, where I can help out with young children who are less fortunate. I think WACO is doing something wonderful for these children whose families are not as fortunate as us. These children are getting gifts for their family with money from WACO and donations from people around the area. WACO is helping children to have a wonderful Christmas that they are not privileged enough to have. I think that this was a worthy cause to volunteer for, and I cannot wait for the next Christmas shopping
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
Out of my kindness I helped because I felt for them. I knew their times was hard, I had experiences of my own. Growing up wasn’t so easy, I lived in 3 states in all parts of each state because my step father’s job required it. So everywhere he went, we went. My step father passed on and that’s when times got really hard. My mother was then a single mom, we barely had food, shelter, or clothes. It was a rough experience. Deanna was a single mom going through the same situation as I was growing up. So I felt her pain, so this is why I helped. Deanna and her daughters barely had any food, so I took it upon myself and went grocery shopping for them and brought it all to them. I spent about $150 on food for just them. After that, a few days later, Deanna contacted me asking if she can borrow some money to pay her light bill. She then asked to buy Vanessa school clothes and items for school because she couldn’t and Vanessa needed these items. I had agreed to take on the task of paying their light bill and paying for Vanessa’s school items. I was also struggling to
