For this article review the forensic science discipline I chose was Toxicology, out of chapter 8. I used the article “Law & Order Special Victims Unit” (SUV) TV Series (1999) “POISON” based on Law & Order; Wilmette in May 11, 2004.
Bibliographic information: Law & Order Special Vitim’s Unit (SUV) was directed by David Platt. He had the credits of Dick Wolf, Michele Fazekas, and Tara Butters for their writing skills. The TV series is pretty much a dramatic outline that goes on in the real word of Criminal Justice-Forensic Investigation and dealing with Forensic Science Toxicology. Forensic Toxicology first started in the 19th century and has been around for hundreds of years. Mathieu Orfila was a French toxicologist and chemist also known to

Casey Novak was a fierce Assistant District Attorney (ADA) who seen the world in black and white. She mostly showed little emotion although she was deeply affected by many the situation she was put in. Novak was very straight forward and serious who succeeded more than 70% of the cases she prosecuted. Novak was added to the case to assist Judge Mary Clark towards the trail of Karen Campbell, a woman who was supposedly accused of poising of her 4 year old daughter Alexis Campbell. Alexis Campbell was taken to the hospital after collapsing in their home after being told to drink “Soapy Water” it was soon discovered that the little girl had ingested a huge amount of detergent which caused her to have poising. Witness whom was Alexis’s older sister Katie, says that their mother forced Alexis to drink the detergent. It is a discipline of forensic science concerned with the study of poisons or toxic substances. Toxicologists, monitors, research and assess these effects with maintaining the health of both the ecosystem and human body. Forensic toxicology is the study of adverse that effect chemical or physical agents on living organisms. It also recognizes the application of industrial and environmental fields, forensic toxicology in pharmaceutical as well as clinical. A toxicologist is charged with the responsibility for identifying and detecting the presence of poisons and drugs in …show more content…
Rosalin was a single mother of two who was accused of poisoning one of her children with antifreeze. Being that the Toxicologist did not have the proper test to detect the condition of the women’s baby like they do now years later, they could not determine the actual cause of death which they thought turned out to be Methylmalonic Acidaemia (MMA) a disorder that is one type of organic acid disorders. According to nutrition-nutricia Methylmalonic acidaemia is a genetic inherited disease were the body is unable to process certain amino acids and fats correctly. Novak gets permission from the child’s mother to exhume (dig up) the body to retest. The test later proves that the baby girl most definitely had the disorder. But after it all she did not die from the disorder the Toxicology report showed that she had crystals on her brain that may have came from the treatment of the antifreeze poising. For example a Toxicologist may also they measure the amount of alcohol or other abused drugs in the body when a person is unable to tell their own side of the story or have already died. Working in crime laboratories, hospital laboratories, medical examiners’ offices, and other health facilities the examiner figured that the cause of death was not from the disorder and that the crystals of the brain were from the treatment. “Being that many years ago they did not have all the
A review of the evidence suggests that Anna’s death was an accident. The blood found at the crime scene was that of Anna Garcia. While the fingerprint of Alex was located at the scene, the results show that he was at the house the night prior to the death. The pills found at the crime scene were aspirin. The time of death was 7:00am which was corroborated by her rectal temperature. The evidence points to Anna being the only one in the house, thus, ruling out homicide and other suspects being charged
A horrific murder happened in tiny Skidmore on December of 2004. Lisa Montgomery and Bobbi Jo Stinnett met and found out that they had much in common and became good friends (Nunes 85-86). Surprisingly, Bobbi and Lisa met in an internet chat room. Bobbi was into puppy breeding and she occasionally served as a judge. Lisa lived in Kansas where her close friends were shocked about what she was talking about. Of course, Lisa shrugged it off and she sent an email to Bobbi saying that she wanted to see the puppies (Nunes 85-86). When Lisa met Bobbi Jo she had a fake name which was Darlene Fisher because she didn’t want Bobbi to know her real identity. When Lisa sent Bobbi the email she had a criminal intent on her mind. She was planning to choke Bobbi into unconsciousness and then cut open her womb and steal Bobbi’s unborn baby. When Lisa arrived at the house she threw a rope around Bobbi’s neck and choked her until she was unconscious. That is when Lisa took a knife and started to cut open Bobbi’s stomach. Lisa had to cut through skin, fat, and muscle to get to Bobbi’s uterus. Bobbi’s baby was in eight-month gestation; Lisa cut and tied the baby’s cord. Lisa stole the baby and fled to her house in Kansas. Unfort...
The downfall of Andrea was sudden, and started with the overdose of a drug that treats major depressive disorder, Trazodone on June 1. After this incident, she was put in the hospital and diagnosed with major depressive disorder by her doctors, but her husband was told that this was an isolated event and was put on a few antidepressants. Barely a month later, Andrea attempted suicide for the first time on June 20th, 1999 by putting a knife to her throat. This attempt frightened Russell Yates, and he started to notice the unusual actions and words his wife was doing and saying. He worried about Andrea’s visions and descriptions that she provided to the hospital staff when she described a knife that was “dull, thin, long like a slicer, and had a wood handle” (O’Malley 38-39). The hospital staff also reported an incident where Andrea may have spoken to Satan, or the dark idea possessing her mind, and she screamed, “What do you want?!!” (O’Malley 40). After 19 days of hospital stay in the psych ward, and an intense mixture of antidepressants called Haldol and Cogentin, Andrea was discharged to a Partial Hospitalization Program. By August 18th, 1999, Andrea’s doctor, Dr. Starbranch, wrote in her notes during a post hospital appointment that the couple wanted to have “as many babies as nature would allow” and designated the fact that this would “guarantee future psychotic depression”
Hello, my fellow students; today I want to take the opportunity to inform you all about my major; which is forensic and why it is important to the criminal justice system. Many people have asked me; what is forensic and they often get it confused with TV shows like CSI Miami or NCIS; however, forensics is more than what you see on TV. So what is forensics; simply put, forensics is the application of science to the criminal and civil laws that are enforced by the law. It involves other courses like biology, chemistry, and physics. Most people have a misconception on how forensics works and this is called the CSI effect; however, for the sake of this class, I am going to focus on a very important cold case called the JonBenet Ramsey case.
Forensic psychology is one of the newest sections of psychology and has been recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA). Psychology is known as the science of mental processes and behavior. The term forensic means different scientific techniques and tests that correlate to a discovery of a crime. When combining the two together, forensic psychology can be defined as “The use of psychology in evaluating mental processes and behaviors within the application to several justice systems” (Bartol & Bartol).
The term forensic toxicology is defined as examination of all aspects of toxicity that may have legal implications (James & Nordby, 2009 p. 61). In the past, poisoning was one of the most popular forms of murder. There are countless natural substances in the world that when ingested into the body in high doses, can become lethal to the human body. What made this form of murder so famous is that most poisons mimic common medical diseases, leading physicians to believe a victim died of natural causes (Ramsland, n.d.). Aside from murder, this forensic discipline is also essential for determining accidental deaths and suicides.

Forensics Anthropology is the study that goes beyond the human skeleton. A forensics anthropologist can find out. How a person lived, the food that person ate, and the overall make-up of a human. The use of forensics has grown in recent years, it is used to solve crimes and locate missing persons. Snow, (1982) Forensics anthropology is not a new science. The first case forensics anthropology was used on was the Jezebel case, dating back to the nineteenth century. This case involved a person, who was thrown from a window. Snow, (1982) The remains found in this case were the skull, feet, and the palm of the victim’s hands.
35% of rape attacks go unreported annually. This is because the victims are afraid to speak up about what happened, and afraid that they may not get the proper help. The team of detectives in the TV series, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, helps to communicate with victims of sexual assault to help them come forward and solve the crimes that were committed. Communication is an important job in helping to solve these cases. After a quick summary of the TV series, I will be showing how the concepts of communication we learned in class, Self-fulfilling prophecy, prejudice, practicing active listening, and cohesiveness, help the team solve the crimes.
I would choose to work in the Special Victims Unit (SVU). I have always been interested in crimes against children; since, being the survivor of child abuse made me the advocate I am today. Training and a special skill-set is mandatory for SVU detectives; ergo, they must be expert investigators and have a deep understanding of the sensitivity of child abuse investigations. Initial and ongoing training is essential among SVU investigators providing up-to-date interviewing and investigative techniques and strategies essential for coordinating multi-disciplinary teams as to ensure full victim restoration. Training would include: •Crime scene investigations •Forensic interviewing •Internet crimes against children •Medical evaluations of child victims
But she took a good look and she was scared because now she sees what her father really did to her. Nicole’s father raped, took naked pictures of her, frightens her, threatens her, made her perform oral sex, and made her watch child pornography at 9. When the detective came to the house, and he showed that to Nicole’s mother she was crying. She felt the pain because it was her child too. On the websites there were many comments about Nicole.
Robert was saying he would “knock the shit out of her”. The reporter told Robert to get out, and Kimberly left with him. Last week, Kimberly went to jail for stealing baby milk and the reporter had the child. The reporter said when the father had the child; the child was filthy and nasty. There was feces and baby food in the child’s car seat and the car seat had an odor.
Forensic science Forensic is a Greek word meaning ‘of the forum'. Forensic science can, therefore, be defined as the application of science to public matters. It could also be defined as the application of science to civil and criminal law. The scope of forensic science Science is wide and therefore one might wonder which science is related to forensics.
Some of what seems to be the most basic forms of forensic science were first documented in the 1800’s such as chemical testing for blood. This would have been when scientists were first starting to connect that perhaps the disciplines could cross and the end result is the glorious fondue that is forensic science. Also in this time period was the first use of toxicology. This is the study of chemicals that could be harmful to living creatures. Most often a toxicology report is done when someone has died and had an autopsy done.
Forensic science is the application of different scientific methods and techniques for better elucidation of justice in criminal-legal system. Majority of these methods have been developed in other scientific disciplines like anthropology, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, genetics, medicine, pathology, phonetics, psychiatry, toxicology etc., though few of them like criminalistics, ballistics, fingerprint science have been solely developed in the field of forensic sciences itself. Forensic science is primarily concerned with recognition, identification, individualization, and evaluation of physical evidence at the scene of crime. The major objective of forensic science is to establish individuality, or to approach it as closely as facilitated
