Journal 7 As Gordon Fee writes in How to Read the Bible for All It’s Worth, gospel is the, “…teachings of Jesus and stories about Jesus.” In other words, the gospels Jesus’ life story, organized by the authors of the gospels, per the divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit. By studying the gospels carefully, it is possible to determine exactly what gospel is by discovering the problems that arise when reading them, their historical and literary contexts, and their application for our lives.
In the process of determining what gospel is, there are two problems that emerge. The first problem that arises is the fact Jesus did not write a gospel himself. This becomes a problem when considering that the gospels are not a personal account, as the prophetic books are. Rather, they are written by individual authors with their own view on the life of Jesus, inspired by the Holy Spirit. In addition, it becomes a problem when considering that Jesus spoke Aramaic and the words in the gospels were initially written in Greek.

It is important to be aware of Jesus’ historical context in general and in particular. In general, it is wise to know the cultural environment that surrounded Jesus, such as the Judaism religion, as well as the forms that Jesus utilized to teach with (parables, proverbs, etc.). In particular, it is wise to know the context surrounding each of Jesus’ teachings and life events. This ranges from knowing who Jesus is directing his message at to what his message means for those people he is talking to. Beyond the historical context of Jesus, there is the historical context of the authors to consider. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the origin of nearly everything the Christian Church teaches about Jesus. The Gospels, in turn, serve as the scale or test of truth and authenticity of everything the church teaches about Jesus. It is said that the Gospels are the link between Jesus of Nazareth and the people of every age throughout history who have claimed to be his followers. Although the Gospels teach us about Jesus’ life they may not provide concrete evidence that what they speak of is true there are several other sources.
The Gospel of John, the last of the four gospels in the Bible, is a radical departure from the simple style of the synoptic gospels. It is the only one that does not use parables as a way of showing how Jesus taught, and is the only account of several events, including the raising of Lazarus and Jesus turning water into wine. While essentially the gospel is written anonymously, many scholars believe that it was written by the apostle John sometime between the years 85 and 95 CE in Ephesus. The basic story is that of a testimonial of one of the Apostles and his version of Jesus' ministry. It begins by telling of the divine origins of the birth of Jesus, then goes on to prove that He is the Son of God because of the miracles he performs and finally describes Jesus' death and resurrection.
Although the New Testament is the main source of information regarding Jesus’ life, Jews often disregard it as a reliable source of information. It was not written until two to three generations after Jesus, hence it cannot be considered a primary source. Also, from a Jewish perspective, the aim of the Gospels is not to give an accurate account of Jesus’ life and teachings; the Gospels served as missionary documents containing accounts recorded by biased evangelists. They reflect the aims of the church rather than actual facts, and their writers were more concerned with the advancement of Christianity than the transmission of factual historical information. For these reasons, it is impossible to separate the historical Jesus from the divine Christ presented in the Gospels, and Judaism regards the Gospels as unreliable and irrational.
It is stated in the New Jerusalem Bible that “the Gospels don’t reflect the biography or the life of Jesus but are the four versions of the preaching from Jesus and are full of wonders and mysteries regarding the life of Jesus.” (New J Bible 1147). The Gospel of Matthew is an eyewitness story written for an audience of believers, under great stress, and persecution. Matthew develops a theological plot incorporating genealogy, speeches, parables, inter and intra textual references, common vocabulary, and fulfillment quotations, with a tension that builds as we are invited into the story. The crucifixion and resurrection bring us to a Christological climax that symbolically points beyond its conclusion to God’s Kingdom, bringing atonement, salvation and the ushering in the Eschaton. The extraordinary events surrounding the crucifixion act as commentary, adding important details concerning the death of Jesus.1

Apostle Matthew’s writings are to prove to the Jews that Jesus is their Messiah. Mark stressed the humanity of Jesus and also his deity.
