St. Augustine once said, “Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is right, even if no one is doing it,” summarizing morality and integrity at its core. Ruta Sepetys, the author of the novel, Between Shades of Gray, coveys the importance of morality and integrity through one character in particular. Sepetys effectively edifies Elena Vilkas as a moral compass who’s integrity influences everyone she encounters for the greater good and with hope for survival. Elena’s unbreakable morality is evident amongst her ever-changing community. Her virtues are also deeply displayed within her family as they journey through their fate.

To begin with, Elena clearly exemplifies her firm morality within her community sequentially influencing all

the Lithuanians who encounter her. To set an example for all, Elena refuses to earn extra food and goods in exchange for helping the NKVD. The NKVD relentlessly seeks to remove the language barrier between them and the deported Lithuanians. Elena's ability to speak both Lithuanian and Russian resolves the NKVD's concern, however, upon receiving an offer for the deceitful job, Elena acknowledges, " 'A guilty conscious is not worth extra food,' ... 'I don't need that on my soul. I'll persevere like everyone else.' " Assuredly, Elena wants to live her life in all fairness to the other Lithuanians. She firmly believes that any wrong-doing is not deserving of the gain of greater goods. Elena aspires to illustrate that a remorseful self-conscious is undeserving of anything, including chances of survival. Her morality conclusively testifies that acting selfishly at the expense of the community will effectively remove her from her community. In that respect, Elena and her family would have to endure on their own with limited assistance which makes their chances of survival slimmer.
