In Jean Anouilh’s version of Antigone as a reader can see conflict at its highest. In the beginning of the book starts off with the two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices at each other’s necks for the kingdom. As soon as they kill each other off their Uncle steps in and has to choice between his family and his duties as king. Three powerful themes from Antigone include family, betrayal, and tragedy.
First family is a big part the play. Antigone thinks it is her duty is bury her older brother Polynices, who became a traitor this the kingdom. However Antigone Uncle Creon commanded no one to bury Polynices. After Antigone was caught trying to bury her brother the guards bought her to her uncle, and her uncle tried to help her and not kill her at first. When Antigone says she will bury him again if he lets her go Creon thinks he has no choice, but to put her to death. Even though Creon tried to help Antigone his son; Haemon did not understand why he was doing that to her. Creon had to make a choice in this story between his family and his job, his choice has his job. If the two brothers never betrayed their father’s wishes no one would have had to die. If they would have just switched of every year no one would have been hurt. Even though Antigone made the right decision she betrayed her Uncle’s orders. By burying her brother her uncle looked at as if she was a traitor now such as her brother. The last betrayal is how Creon betrayed his family, he could have easily took back his orders and buried Polynices. When Creon made his choice his job he betrayed them.
