Bethany Hamilton: No Fear
A vicious shark attack cost this young surfer her arm and could have ended her life. Instead, it left her determined to pursue her dreams and embrace her passions.
Who: Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off, but ultimately returned to and was victorious in professional surfing, and is an inspirational public figure.
Where: She lived in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii her whole life and attended many competitions in Hawaii, in fact, won her first National title after 2 years from the shark incident.
Why: Even after her left arm was bitten off, she was determined to pursue and wholeheartedly embrace her dreams, she wouldn’t let anything get in the way of her having the ability to surf, even though the difficulty of one arm. She had the courage to go back in the water and yet still competed, at first it was difficult and her emotions were all over the place. Then she had faith in God and successfully surfed again. She made her body what she wanted it to do and learned to surf with one arm faster than people would expect. Furthermore, she is self-smart, she knows herself very well and teaches herself how to surf at the age of 5. She makes connections between surfing and who she is as an individual. She is also people smart she understands other people and is a smart leader. For example, in Thailand, she helped a kid go in the water and surf. Lynne met an Egyptian swimmer, and he explained what to expect in the English Channel, especially the cold. She got used to the cold by wearing only sandals, shorts, and t-shirts all day. When she got to England, she needed to find a pilot to help guide her through the waters. Her pilot, recommended that she swim from England to France. During the race, at 11pm, she bumped into bunch of lettuce and she fight against the current. She was determined to break the world record. To finish the race, she had to land on the rocks. When she did, she had lots of cuts from the rocks and mussels. She broke the record with 9 hours and 57 minutes. When she swam Cook Strait, she was a bit stubborn and angry at her dad and coach, but she finished the race. She was the first to swim the Strait of Magellan, Bering Strait, and Cape of Good Hope. It was hard for Lynne to swim the Strait of Magellan because they occurred a few problems. She could barely stay in the cold water for two hours, the storms didn’t help out the situation, and when she almost made it to the shore, the whirlpool almost dragged her in. The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Mary Bryant was in the group of the first convicts (and the only female convict) to ever escape from the Australian shores. Mary escaped from a penal colony which often is a remote place to escape from and is a place for prisoners to be separated. The fact that Bryant escaped from Australia suggests that she was a very courageous person, this was a trait most convicts seemed to loose once they were sentenced to transportation. This made her unique using the convicts.

Surfing has come a long way since it was first conceived (roughly 1500 years ago). From the Polynesian “watermen” and Hawaiian Kings, to the European takeover in Hawaii and surfing's American debut in the early twentieth century and all the way through present day, surfing has had a rich history. Over the decades, surfing has fit in to a number of roles in society, but whether we surfers are seen as beach-bums or heroes (as of late), we still surf only because we love it, because the ocean’s calls us, because nothing else on this planet can create the sensation felt by riding a wave.
After many interviews with Bethany’s family and reviewing her autobiography, the film began to come together for Sean. The setting is Kauai, Hawaii, where the film replays what happened to Hamilton that day. It was early one Halloween morning when Bethany went for a morning surf. As she glided against the water, a tiger shark appeared and attacked her, tearing her arm out of its socket. That day she unfortunately lost over half the blood in her body, but she did not allow this misfortune to stop her. Indeed her steps towards recovery were phenomenal. One may suggest that Bethany truly has salt water flowing through her veins. How else can one explain the passion that ignites her to surf? Even the detachment of her arm could not separate her from the waves. Throughout the film, she demonstrated how we should never give up on our dreams.
What is it like to live a life with Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)? Narcissism is a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy. People with this disorder can be vindictive, selfish, cunning person. They do not care who is harmed or hurt. Abigail was the leader of all of the girls that were seen dancing and calling on evil spirits. Abigail would threaten the girls by saying if they said anything, she would kill or harm them severely. She wanted what she couldn’t have, so that made her psychologically unstable. Abigail William’s would be convicted in today’s court because she gave many threats to kill the girls who were with her the night they were dancing if they spoke up in court, her behavior caused harm to many even though she may not have physically done damage herself and due to previous court cases, some people diagnosed with Narcissism were found innocent due to their mental instability but others were guilty because they were mentally unstable. As it is shown, Narcissistic Personality Disorder causes her to be selfish, arrogant, dangerous, and obsess over the man she could not have, because Abigail threatened the girls she was with the night they were dancing, to not confess to anything in court.
She values honesty in communication and she possesses the ability to be brutally honest with someone. She will come up to me and tell me her opinion if she believes that it might benefit me in some way. Another one of her values is appearance or beauty. She will spend hours picking the perfect outfit and doing her hair and makeup to perfection. She wakes up almost two hours earlier every day before school so that she will have enough time to get ready. Some people might think that she is conceited because of the focus on her looks, but she values the time that people put into their appearance as a reflection of their dedication. Her dedication to her appearance is something that she greatly values making her deserving of praise. How many other people could do what she does? Her passion and dedication is unrivaled by any other when it comes to her looks. For a long time, women’s potential in Science was little to none. However, over the years, it has now changed because of the outstanding breakthroughs and encouraging accomplishments women have done through the years. It is because of them, women’s potential in Science and other realms of studies has now evolved with more understandings and discoveries. It is for the reason of Maria Mitchell, one of the first female astronomers to be recognized in Science, that women’s potential were essentially respected. Her discoveries during her time as a student, a teacher, and an astronomer paved the way for many others, not just in Science, but also for woman’s rights and potential to be seen.
Bethany Hamilton is an example of dealing with change in an optimistic way. In October 2003, Bethany was attacked by a shark while out surfing in Tunnels beach, Hawaii. Without warning, a Tiger shark attacked her surfboard, dragging her back and forth and then disappearing into the ocean. Bethany was able to compose herself to use her right arm to swim back to the shore. She was later taken to hospital with severe injuries, where her left arm was amputated. She came through her recovery with things that were important to her, such as her family and her Christian faith. Despite the trauma of the incident, Hamilton was determined to return to surfing. Just 10 weeks after the accident, she returned to the ocean and went surfing again. She adjusted to the change by using a custom made surfboard and changing her surfing style. Bethany taught herself to surf with only one arm and she also began surfing competitively in competitions again. Hamilton claims that the loss of her arm was a blessing in disguise.
From her childhood to her adult life, Helen Keller never lost hope or faith, she has shown us that with enough perseverance and hard work anything can be accomplished. Helen Keller has encountered many important and famous people, wrote 14 books, and won countless awards and honors throughout her life such as being inducted in the Women’s Hall of Fame. Helen Keller was a strong independent woman who taught herself not only to read, write, and speak, but also accomplished the normal actions of an everyday life.
