This best practice strategy was incorporated in this lesson when students were introduced to the lesson and given the objective. Later in the lesson, when students must begin making inferences, cues are given when I make my own inferences about the artwork and map of Egypt. Cues are also given when I introduce the new vocabulary. Explicitly stating what some of the items are in the artwork allows students to understand what is occurring in the still image. The information supplements the in-class lectures by providing sufficient information into the life of the mundane versus the life of the rulers and the pharaohs. It provides information that is clear and concise so the reader doesn’t need to dissect the information and gains a clear understanding of real life for the Ancient Egyptians. Over the course of observations, I learned that there is no one way to do anything in teaching. After a few weeks of observing, I was relieved because I thought that I could stop worrying so much about doing the “right” thing with the students. I saw a successful teacher doing, or neglecting to do things that went against what I had been taught. I incorrectly assumed that the choices the teacher made about how to organize the day, approach a lesson, or manage the classroom were mostly a matter of personal preference and that several approaches would produce equally desirable results.
The ancient world was truly a wonderful and interesting thing. Mankind developed and evolved greatly during this time. Also during this time, many advancements in technology helped lead to great master architecture. The Great Pyramid, Temple of Artemis and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia are some of these famous works. These masters of architecture can often be referred to the seven wonders of the ancient world. Sadly, all but one of these ancient wonders have been lost to the times, the only wonder that still remains is the Great Pyramid of Giza. The topic of my essay is Ancient Egypt. During the course of this essay the basic details of who, what, when, where, how and why will be discussed.
The student I chose to do my project on is in the first grade and just moved to America from Egypt one month ago. She moved here with just her mom and dad. Egypt is located in Africa, but directly connects to the Middle East. This country is well known for the Nile River and for its rich history of rulers, known as pharaohs. The official language spoken in Egypt is Modern Standard Arabic, which is very different from English and may cause some complications with the learning process in America.
Instead, EL students benefit in learning new content knowledge when an instructor methodically produces a lesson with a systematic I do you do approach; while purposely adding visuals whenever possible. Modeling content knowledge can be accomplished when the instructor writes the objective or provides an outline of what the lesson entails in student friendly vocabulary for each lesson where students can visually see. Next, the instructor should discuss what the end goal of the lesson is through hand gestures and changing the speed and tone of the voice to elaborate key concepts. Additionally, teachers should provide visual vocabulary whenever possible. Playing videos, word walls, or showing pictures of key vocabulary in a lesson will help students who struggle with differences in language grasp what is being asked of them more clearly. Lastly, instructor should show examples of projects and essays for reference. This will allow EL students to visualize the end product; allowing them to organize their ideas and
