Best Friends
Steam hung heavily in the air as Ashli Jacobson stood with her head bowed, letting the streams of hot water beat against her back. The radio by the sink blared a heavy bass line and undecipherable words. Reluctantly, she turned the shower off, wiped the water from her eyes and stepped from the dripping shower stall. A sudden pounding on the door jerked her out of her reverie. What was I just thinking about? Blast-
"Ashli? Are you going to be out soon?"
Ashli sighed, suppressing the urge to yell, No! I'm staying in here forever! "I'll be out in a minute," she called instead, wiping vapor from the mirror.
"Hurry up, would you?"
Ashli turned off the radio and secured a pink, fluffy towel around herself. Her bare feet making tiny puddles on the cool tile floor, she went to the door and opened it. Chilly air from the hallway hit her sharply and she shivered, clutching the towel closer.
Jenny waited in the hall. Her blue eyes flashed with impatience. "I have to put my face on before my date." She brushed past Ashli and planted herself in front of the mirror.
"What time is it?" Ashli asked, aware she was dripping on the floor. She raked a hand through her sopping wet hair.
"Almost seven," Jenny answered, searching for her mascara.
Joshua will be here soon." Ashli's brain began to make a list of all the things she had to do before her best friend arrived for their Saturday night ritual of popcorn, television, and conversation.
Jenny looked at Ashli doubtfully. "Are you sure? He hasn't called."
Ashli impatiently swiped away a lock of wet hair before answering. "He never calls. He'll be here. It's Saturday night. We never miss a Saturday together."
"I noticed." Jenny began to apply blush to her cheeks. "You two are awfully close, " she commented.
Ashli rolled her green eyes and sighed. "That's why he's my best friend, as opposed to just a friend.
"How did his doctor's appointment go?"
The question caught Ashli off guard. Not only did it come out of nowhere, but Ashli never shared important information like that with Jenny. "Well, since you apparently listened to our telephone conversation, you know the doctors are satisfied that there isn't any trace of leukemia left. He has a clean bill of health," Ashli answered through clenched teeth.
“H-Huh?” I stuttered and moved away, getting more uncomfortable. “I-I guess I did. Is he going to shower or take a bath?”
Chris stays silent for a moment, not sure if she’s supposed to reply or not, before saying, “You never introduced me. I wish I had gotten a chance to meet him.”
"You're okay!" Archer breathed a sigh of relief, running his hands through his dirty hair. "Akito had me worried, he said–"
"Sorry. I have to go," she said quickly, "My uncle is coming. I'll talk later. She set the phone down next to her as her uncle walked through the front door and into the living room.
Steven looked at me and saw me staring at Lauren. He shuffled over and whispered in my ear. “You like her don’t
“So are you still planning on being with him then, if you get the chance?” he asked quietly.
“Hey! Kasumi!” Her friend’s voice was fading fast as Kasumi rushed down the stairs and opened the door to get out.
Did you know that the best kinds of lovers are the people that start out as your friend? This is shown in the lyrics of the R&B song "Lovers and Friends", sung by Usher, Ludacris, and Lil Jon. This song is about two people who have been friends for a long time and now are ready to take the step into being lovers. In "Lovers and Friends" the writers use sensory description and figurative language to show the theme that friends make the best lovers.
“Take a shower. I’ll brew some coffee, and see you when you’re ready.” Colleen said.
The third maddening buzz of my alarm woke me as I groggily slid out of bed to the shower. It was the start of another routine morning, or so I thought. I took a shower, quarreled with my sister over which clothes she should wear for that day and finished getting myself ready. All of this took a little longer than usual, not a surprise, so we were running late. We hopped into the interior of my sleek, white Thunderbird and made our way to school.
Craning her neck she was able to see the shop ahead so she kept forward sparing a microsecond to check her time. “Fuck.” She murmured, seeing it was 9:10. Forcing her short legs to pick up the pace she, reached the door with a minute to spare.
“Come on inside, honey. Let me make you some tea and you can sit and relax, we can unpack your stuff later.”
