The evening of Friday September the 11th at 8:30pm I sat down for 1 hour to watch one of my favorite television shows “the Bernie Mac show”. In the show comedian Bernie Mac takes in his nieces and nephews while his sister is undergoing rehab. The little boy in the show, Junior has asthma, likes to do magic tricks and is sensitive he doesn’t like to play sports like some of the other boys. Even though I didn’t watch this tv show with this assignment in mind after watching for a short time it became evident that Junior didn’t live up to hegemonic male stereotypes. Bernie didn’t approve of junior’s hobbies and how he chooses to use his free time. And it’s pretty obvious it’s because he thinks that these types of activities make him “soft” like
somehow doing magic tricks and crying after a sad movie make you less of a man. Junior, despite his health condition decides to join his school’s football team to gain his uncles approval. A few games into the season its evident that Juniors Asthma is going to prevent him from continuing his football career. Bernie see’s how much of a health hazard it is yet he doesn’t take his nephew off the team because he doesn’t want the other dads to think he’s “soft”. The
The parents’ dilemma, the visuals of their anxiety and fears were captured very clearly in this clip. The stills of Michael connected to the breathing tubes, having his head prepped for surgery etc., visually evoked the magnitude of what the parents and the Michael had to go through. However, the recovery and progress was an awesome success story filled with all the elements of an inspirational narrative that not only inspired but educated as
The story A Television Drama, by Jane Rule is an exciting story about an unusual event, which the main character, Carolee Mitchell, experiences the end of. The story is about her quiet street becoming unusually busy with police officers, and how the man who is being chased by these officers ends up being outside her front door. Through the point of view of the story, the characterization and character change of Carolee Mitchell, and the setting of the story, A Television Drama is an exciting read. The story conveys how important it is to be aware of ones surroundings, and what is happening around oneself through these elements.
He was offered a “Club cap” but James “gave it back” to his friend, Kris. They waited until Kris left the apartment building, then played a game of checkers. James had wanted to fit in with his friends in the “K-Bones” club but had realized that his brother was more important. He pushed his friend away to play games with Isaac. Furthermore, James has to “take care of” Isaac when his mother is at work. Even when he is trying to fit in with a devious club, he would still “hold Isaac’s hand” or even “carry him home”. James is a very nice and caring brother. This is logical because, that is what a good brother should look like. James must truly love Isaac as his brother, and admires his family more than his
Amazing ted talk by Scott Dinsmore. In October, 2012 at the Young Museum in San Francisco, Scott Dinsmore was given the opportunity to present a Ted Talk about his view on careers. The name of his Ted Talk was “How to find work you love.” Scott Dinsmore goal was to spark and give drive to the brains of those working for a pay check. He was aiming to encourage 9-5ers to go after careers that they truly enjoy and love. Having worked at a fortune 500 company in the pass, he realized that working to build your resume was a waste of time. So he created a company where he could motivate people and have them working in fields that fits their passion.
The movie Bernie is true story of a murder committed in Carthage, Texas in 1996. What set this crime apart from other murders was the reaction of the citizens. Bernie Tiede shot and killed Marjorie Nugent in November 1996. The people of Carthage were more worried about Bernie’s fate than his act of murdering Marjorie.
Samuelson uses his essay to explore a thesis that Americans are moving from a ‘work’ ethic to a ‘fun’ ethic. However, he doesn't spend much time explaining or introducing this, preferring to spend his time presenting facts, articles, quotes, polls and stories to prove his point. Unfortunately, as a reader, this choice of evidence, rather than solidifying his point, actually begs the question: what is his point? Samuelson spends very little time in the essay actually concluding or explaining his information. Instead, he buries the reader with facts and statistics, moving on from one factor to another before the reader even has the chance to grasp the importance of the previous one.
...d to investors, and most of Madoff’s assets have been sold off. Perhaps the greatest irony is that Madoff’s wife, Ruth, is now struggling to pay her bills as a result of the government freezing assets, and selling their belongings to repay the people Madoff ruined. In the end, justice has been served, and the Madoff family has paid for the crimes of Bernie. Though, there is a great tragedy in this, Bernie’s son Mark Madoff committed suicide in 2010, leaving behind two children. “Mack says the ordeal led Mark Madoff to commit suicide last December, on the two-year anniversary of his father's arrest. Mark had first attempted suicide in 2009” (Cuomo and Rhee 2011). As of now, Bernie’s tragic downfall stands as a stern warning against financial improprieties, and the main focus of investigators should be returning as much money as possible to those who were victimized.
First titled Life and Stuff, Roseanne aired its first season in 1988 and its last season in 1997. The show starred Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Conner and John Goodman as Dan Conner. as Jennifer, a victim states, “I feel our childhood has been taken away from us and it has left a big hole in our lives.”
In the Black Mirror episode “Hang the DJ”, there actually is not much science involved. The bulk of the wonders in the episode are more of psychological and economic matters. How is it that the government can put these houses out for people to stay varying times for free and without these people having jobs? Also, how is it that people would remain sane after all of the emotional trauma that would occur? Would hoeing around be worth the little bit of your life that you actually end up spending with “The One”?
“Sunday in the Park” by Bel Kaufman, is a short story that illustrates the contrast and conflict of human behavior through a typical family's encounter with a barbaric man. Contrast is emphasized by conflicting pairs of opposing behaviors: civility, rationality, and harmony against barbaric, instinct, and turmoil. The author continuously develops a positive atmosphere, promptly to shatter the image. Through the story, Kaufman implies that humans conflict between their two sides of contrast, either it is the viewer, between characters, or within oneself.
There is a pattern of miscommunication in the Who’s on First skit by Abbott and Costello. The premise of the skit is, that Abbott is identifying the players on a baseball team for Costello. Yet, their names or nicknames can be interpreted as non-responsive answers from Abbott by Costello. For example, when Costello asked the question who’s on first. Abbott answers him with the name of the first baseman ‘Who’. Since the ball players have funny names such as Who, Costello becomes frustrated, angry and louder. What makes this skit confusing and yet very funny is the repetition and the play on words. Also, that both men think they are talking about the same thing, but in reality, they are not. Neither man is actually listening to the other.
He even draws his unbalanced glasses because his brain damage left him “nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other”. He shows how his hands and feet are huge compared to his paper thin body. In his drawing you can see the amount of pain Junior goes through for being who he is, he’s accepted how he looks however he doesn’t want to; Junior uses hyperbole in his drawings to exaggerate how disproportional he is. He believes himself to be worthless with no value and that’s how he draws himself. The text used in the drawing of him speaking says “Th-th-the RAIN in THPAIN…” (p.5) which shows that he has a speech problem. Even though he’s very intelligent, when he presents himself as whom he is, someone who has a speech problem it seems as if he’s not very intelligent. Due to the way the other people on the reservation see him and bully him, it forces him to degrade himself. The only way for him to release his pain is through

In Paul Scheuring’s 4 season thriller there is no Gods you need to sacrifice for but rather the bond of family worth doing anything for. In Prison Break, protagonist Michael Scofield would go any extent for his family. Michael had his life together with a masters as a structural engineer while his brother was just a high school dropout. However when Michael finds out that his brother was accused for killing the vice president’s brother and put on death row, Michael gave up that future of his filled with opportunity to save his brother. How far would you go for others? Michael got a full body tattoo and got himself incarcerated in order to break Lincoln, his brother, out. He did this for him because he loves his family. Although Scofield is
