“Engaging in community service provides students with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large.” I chose to do community service as my way of practicing democracy in my society. For years, I have been spending a lot of time at the Berkeley Skatepark located right next to the Gabe Catalfo Soccer Fields. Berkeley Skatepark is where I grew up and where I developed many of my skateboarding skills. Thanks to Berkeley Skatepark staying open until 9:30PM, I always had somewhere to go whenever I wanted to skate at night. I know many of the workers and counselors/mentors that work with kids at the skatepark, but I had never thought of becoming on of them. For my act of community …show more content…
service, I decided to volunteer as a skatepark monitor and as an instructor for skate lessons. The guys who monitor the skatepark are the superheroes without capes. They are the reason that the City of Berkeley allows the skatepark to be there in the first place. They are there to provide assistance when someone gets injured and they are there to prevent many different illegal activities (fights, tagging, drugs, etc…) from happening at the skatepark. I got the chance to speak with Gerald Patterson, who is the head of both the skatepark monitor program and the skate instructor program. We spoke about the problem that he feels that he is addressing, which is, the lack of facilities/environments for kids to go to and feel safe. He feels that the skatepark provides a clean and a safe environment for the youth to come and spend their time. The availability of a public skatepark helps prevent damage to private property and also reduces illicit behavior within our communities. Mr. Patterson said that he is a servant of the community, a servant of the youth. Their entire operation is funded by the City of Berkley and that is who they receive their compensation from. I could tell that even though they were being paid (justifiably) to monitor the skatepark and to instruct the skate school, that even if they were not being paid, they would do it for free. Mr. Patterson believes that their guided philosophy is to 1) “Provide a safe environment for members of their community and to treat every equal, all-while hosting as many free events as possible.” and 2) “SKATE or DIE”. During my time while working with different monitors and instructors, I learned the ropes of their day-to-day operation.
I was able to monitor the skatepark and make sure that there weren’t any sketchy business going on. Starting at the end of March and continuing throughout the entire month of April, Berkeley Skatepark will be closed for renovations. The skatepark monitors are still required to come to work and make sure that no one is hopping the fence and skating the park. Spending all day at a closed and empty skatepark is not fun, so I took the liberty of rounding up some of the local kids and traveling to other local skateparks, such as Emeryville, Mont Clair and Oakland. I was responsible for the kids that came with me for the day and would be held accountable if anything happened to any of them, thankfully nothing bad happened. During these days, I was teaching many of them the fundamentals of skateboarding: the proper way to fall to prevent injuries, skatepark etiquette, etc… Overall, we all had a great time.
Service is pivotal to building a democratic community. In class, we have learned that democracy means rule by the people. How can the people rule their community if they aren't involved in their community? By participating in community service, you are directly giving back to your community. Participating in community service isn't only beneficial to the organization and people being served, but is also beneficial to the people serving. According to the ICCE’s
website, they have “adopted” Dr. Ehrlich’s definition of civic engagement, which is: “Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.” (Preface, p.vi)” The social problem in this case is our youth being exposed to violence and criminal behavior in their neighborhoods. The skatepark provides them with a safe environment that they can spend their time at, without having to worry about being bad environments. While working on this project, I learned the importance of having a mentor in life. Mentors can provide a spark, or a simple path of guidance in life. Many of the local kids that come to the Berkeley Skatepark 24/7 are at that stage in life where it is easy to fall into bad-habits. The skatepark is a safe place that breeds perseverance, determination and creativity. Skateboarding provides self-discipline and progression through creativity and courageousness. These are all key elements to have in life, which will help you become a better individual overall. I am thankful that I was able to work with the monitors and instructors at Berkeley Skatepark and this project has vastly shifted my perception of Berkley Skatepark. It is more than just a slab of concrete, it is a community, home to people from all walks of life, that all share the same passion for skateboarding.
I feel that the importance of service is to help a person in need because you could change someone's life, not because you feel that you need to. People who love what they are doing are the people who effect everything around them.Service has impacted my life because it makes me a better person. My family feels the impact, the community feels the impact, even servicing for a few hours a week affects the people around you. It makes the community a better place to live.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
I think that community service is something that everyone should do. Some people only do community service because they need the hours for school or an extracurricular activity, but when you something nice for another person, it not only makes you feel 100 times better about yourself, it also, whether you know it or not, improves another person's life. Being able to give to another person without expecting anything in return is the best quality that a person can have because the 21st century is a time where a portion of people have what they want at their fingertips. What some people don't realize is that not everyone has the blessings of living the life that they have, that is why I try so hard to give back to the community. I personally do community service a lot, and seeing the faces of the people that I have helped means so much to me because I know deep down that I have done something that required me to put others needs before my own. I get that feeling when I help out in the special needs class at my school. I feel complete when the students give me hugs and thank me for my help. That feeling motivates me and makes me a happier person. Even when all I can do for another person is make them smile, I feel like I have done something important that has helped someone more than I
I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
Community service means helping people who are in need and not excepting anything in return. It is very important because it teaches you how to work with different people and it helps you and the person you are helping. There are always places in the community that are in need of volunteers. The organization I chose to volunteer at was BAPS, also known as Bochasan Vasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha.
Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
Community service: What a wonderful opportunity for students! A chance for our younger citizens to learn responsibility, experience the satisfaction that comes with helping others and to acquire new skills.
This not only introduces them to the community around them, but gives them an opportunity to become engaged by offering their time to help provide a service. It is through this service that students learn more about what issues exist. It allows them to see things in a different way by experiencing firsthand the things that other people go through daily. Most of us students are fortunate enough to attend college, and not have to deal with struggles like poverty and hunger. Being involved helps us to not only grow as students, but as persons.
Service learning is a method of “knowing and doing”. In my experience, it’s the one of the best way to learn the material as well reflect what we learn by helping the community. For me even more than doing it for the grades, I like to serve other people whole heartedly. The feeling of fulfillment after you serve is beyond ourselves when we extended our arm for the people in the community.
Community service is a voluntary, unpaid act of kindness that an individual perform to benefit and help others who are in need. It is important for individuals to do community services. It is not only about helping the community but, also making a difference in someone’s life. It can help a person grow and build connections mentally, physically, and emotionally. Mentally, a person who does community service is able to change their perspective of the world and appreciate the things they have. Physically, it can help a person be more motivated and explore what is going on in their community. Emotionally, it can help a person feel kindness therefore, it can also help an individual interact with others, build a relationship, and further their communication. Participating in community service can help a person become more active and involved in their community, it can also build your work related skills and make you gain experience to network with future employers and companies. Community Service helps an
Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
As an educated professional in my community, I would like to make a contribution to society and my community. My background in hours of community service has prepared me for this and shown me its value.
Service to other is helping others solving their needs and wanting nothing in return. There’s many ways someone can serve others, it can be from helping and elder clean their backyard to major projects like running activities to raise money for different causes. My role in service learning hasn’t been a lot. I have done a few fundraisers for my school to pay for the activities they have planned for us (the students) following orders from others.
