Many people who read the poem Beowulf would probably find it hard to find similarities between the poem and life in modern America. How could one compare an ancient Anglo-Saxon culture with the sophisticated world that we are living in today? But, if we look closely, we may be able to pinpoint some parallel between the two societies. This essay will discuss the topics of warrior life, the “bad guy,” and social similarities. One might wonder how a warrior culture might be similar to our own? But if we consider American culture, we are actually still very war-like. We have a strong military system built to protect our country and the people that make it up. We are also known for going to the aid of other countries that aren’t able to defend themselves. This is very similar to the mentality of the warriors in Beowulf. Beowulf comes to the aid of Hrothgar’s falling kingdom.

The story of Beowulf has changed many times over the years. Whether it is from the epic poem from the past or from present day Hollywood. Hollywood has many different depictions of the story, even though none of them truly depict the epic poem. Beowulf was the first story to ever be written down. The poem was originally all pagan but Christianity was added to the poem because it was written by Christian monks.
In Tolkien’s lecture, “Beowulf: The monsters and the Critics,” he argues that Beowulf has been over analyzed for its historical content, and it is not being studied as a piece of art as it should be. He discusses what he perceives the poet of Beowulf intended to do, and why he wrote the poem the way he did. Tolkien’s main proposition, “it was plainly only in the consideration of Beowulf as a poem, with an inherent poetic significance, that any view or conviction can be reached or steadily held” (Tolkien). He evaluates why the author centers the monsters throughout the entire poem, why the poem has a non-harmonic structure, why and how the author fusses together Christianity and Paganism, and how the author uses time to make his fictional poem seem real. He also discusses the overall theme of Beowulf and other assumptions of the text. To support his viewpoints, Tolkien uses quotations and examples from the poem, quotations from other critics, and compares Beowulf to other works of art. Tolkien discusses several statements in interpreting Beowulf as a poem.
Despite numerous cultural and technological advancements, life in modern America continues to bear resemblance to the Anglo-Saxon world. Although it may take time and some loss of pride to admit it, since characteristics of human nature have stayed the same, from work place to personal relationships, the similarities between the two worlds are uncanny.
This essay is the comparison between Beowulf and a modern day hero. I consider any American soldier to be my modern day hero. In this essay I will explain in three paragraphs of how my modern day hero is like Beowulf. With in these three paragraphs I will go over how they are both fighting for a good cause, how they are both rewarded for what they do, and how they are both treated with much respect.
In this essay I will consider the objections to Virtue Ethics (VE) raised by Robert Louden in his article entitled On Some Vices of Virtue Ethics which was published in 1984. It is important to note at the outset of this essay that it was not until 1991 that the v-rules came up in literature. So Louden is assuming throughout his article that the only action guidance that VE can give is “Do what the virtuous agent would do in the circumstances.” I will be addressing Louden’s objections with the benefit of knowing about the v-rules. First of all, let us discuss what VE is. VE is a normative ethical theory that emphasises the virtues or moral character, thus it focuses on the moral agent. It differs from Deontology which emphasises duties or rules, and Utilitarianism which emphasises the consequences of our actions.

On the other hand, however others argue that the laws about driving while drunk are already too strict and should remain unchanged. In sum, then, the issue is whether the laws about driving drunk should be greatly increased to be more effective, or remain unchanged. Because drunk driving can result in unnecessary and premature deaths, unsafe roadways, billions of dollars spent on taxpayers due to DUI’S, and losing a loved one. Drunk driving laws should be altered to be more efficient.
Over the past century driving under the influence has caused many problems for crime and society in the United States and all over the world. According to the state of Utah’s statute driving under the influence is defined as “a person operating a motor vehicle that has been drinking and has an increased amount of alcohol in their system that can show up on a blood test or a breath test of .08 or greater at the time of the test (Wormdahl, 2012).” However, in the state of Utah also includes being under the influence of any type of controlled substance that prevents the driver from being able to operate the vehicle properly (Wormdahl, 2012). In the United States the legal drinking age is twenty-one years old. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (2009b) the limit for drinking and driving differs depending on the type of vehicle if it is a commercialized vehicle the legal limit is .04 and if the driver is under the age of twenty-one anything above .00, requires a revoked license for thirty days. One thing that is different for Driving Under the Influence that differs from all other traffic infractions is that DUIs can result anywhere for example parking lots or even setting in your own driveway can result in you receiving a DUI charge (Wormdahl, 2012). Warfare is a prominent theme in Beowulf . The reasons and conduct for and during warfare are mentioned and displayed throughout the poem. The reason for warfare is usually for retribution. As an act of revenge, battles are fought. The conduct is also very standard and prevalent. All warfare fought by honorable men had to be fought fair. If the opposing side bore no weapons, then the other side also used no weapons. The author of this poem depicts himself/herself to be an advocate of warfare. By idolizing Beowulf because of his heroic deeds during warfare, the poet makes armed conflict courageous and noble.
In history, evil men have reigned supreme across many cultures. Some people say that being evil is inherent in every human. There are many facts, consequences, and risks about drunk driving explained above. In my opinion, drinking and driving are not right, and they are not worth the consequences, and it is not fair for a drunk driver to risk the lives of innocent people. For a solution to drinking in driving, every person who gets caught should have to serve at least one year in jail, so he can truly understand the consequence for putting others lives at risk. Driving under the influence not only endangers your life, but the life of others on the road. Therefore, if you must drink, don 't drive and if you must drive then don 't drink. Also, drink responsibly at a proper age because underage drinking may lead to complications, such as mental capacity and physical appearance. In my opinion, we need to make some kind of public service announcements explaining the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving. When I was in high school, I made several public service announcements with my group on this issue in my video production class, and we showed these PSAs to the students in homeroom class on the weekly basis. I believe these announcements will be beneficial for the teenagers and adults. Driving is a privilege you should not want to be taken away.
