In the epic poem “Beowulf”, an Anglo-Saxon poet demonstrates the heroic and elegiac stages of a fearless and daring man that goes by the name of Beowulf. Beowulf illustrates his years of glory and fame from his youth to old age. As he grows older his achievements also rise, but when his final day of battle comes, he falls, leaving his unforgettable legacy behind. The accomplishments of Beowulf are like no other hero of his time. King Hrothgar of Danes also knows of Beowulf’s strengths and his inability to loose the battles he faces. He beckons Beowulf to help him defeat the beast Grendel, the descendant of Cain, who has disturbed King Hrothgar’s people for many winters. Beowulf tells the king that “Grendel is no braver, no stronger Than I am! I could kill him with my sword; I shall not, Easy as it would be” (lines 677-679). Beowulf stands fearless and strong awaiting for the arrival of Grendel in Herot, the gathering hall. Grendel comes that night and attacks Beowulf. With his bear hands he rips off Grendel’s arm and keeps it as a trophy to show King Hrothgar. Many …show more content…

It was during his reign as king that a dragon awoke and began to attack the people and places of Geatland.The dragon creates a giant massacre of all the buildings, halls, and Beowulf’s throne. Beowulf and the people of Geatland begin to mourn the loss of their beautiful land that vanishes right before their eyes. Beowulf, like any great king would, prepares for battle against this dragon in order to stand and defend his people. As he gets closer to the dragon the shield begins to melt. “And for the first time in his life that famous prince Fought with fate against him, with glory Denied him” (25573-2574).
