The heavyweight, airtight bay door of the W.G. Scyld closed. The circular spacecraft detached from the Angel on My Shoulder repair base above Gyth, a tidally locked exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star. In addition to the light sails retracting, the Scyld’s ion thrusters simultaneously fired a short burst as the ship moved away toward the Einstein-Rosen Dark Matter Bridge.
Beowulf, the captain of the ship, wore a slimming blazer which was garnished with many metals from past military achievements. His mission was to aid the Spear-Danes against one of their malfunctioning quantum computers. The artificial intelligence (AI) had gone rogue earlier in the week and was murdering workers.
The Scyld was now approaching the Einstein-Rosen Dark

Mater Bridge. Gravitational turbulence grew as they came closer to the spherical wormhole, which had been created by the Bridge. The ship began to orbit the spherical hole, coming closer and closer after each rotation, until it was pulled into the spherical wormhole. Lights flickered. The ship jolted and rocked. They lost contact with Command. Red lights flashed on the consoles. Then suddenly, they reached the other side and the ship slid silently through, exiting the spherical hole.
Ahead of them was the Spear-Dane colonial outpost on the planet Feoshnel. The Spear-Dane watch post haled them. A guard asked, “What kind of men are you, who arrive rigged for combat? Do you seek trouble?” Beowulf refused a reply.
The watch post’s tungsten window covers rolled down and their magnetic accelerator cannon targeted the Scyld. “Wait!”, Beowulf shouted at the monitor, “We have come to help you eradicate your faulty AI”. The guard looked back. He asked, “Are you Beowulf?” Beowulf nodded. The guard motioned to someone off screen. The window covers rolled up and the magnetic accelerator cannon moved back to its original place. “You are free to dock on the right. Once you’re inside you will be questioned, and we will see if you are really who you say you are.”

post. The Scyld moved through the space that the watch post once occupied, its debris shooting through space away from them.
The Scyld stayed behind Feoshnel’s moon Pamla, cloaked and shielded from the various scanners on the planet. Already a small ship had gone to the investigate. One of the in-atmosphere crafts aboard the Scyld was launched, carrying Beowulf and some of his best men. it moved past the investigating ship and into the atmosphere of the planet. The entry of this vessel alerted ground-to-air missile silos, one fired. A the heat shield of their ship sizzled and popped, another noise was heard, one that sounded like a jet engine. Then, suddenly, it collided with one of the wings on their ship. sending them in a spiraling turn toward the earth. warning signs flashed. Those who unbuckled began to float. some hit their heads on the wall as the ship tossed about. The Danes tracked the ship as it plummeted down and reached terminal velocity. “Strap in, eject, and lock your armor, men”, said Beowulf. Their armor was made of titanium, with a shock absorbing gel between the armor and the person wearing it. All at once the seats on the craft shot up and out of their places. Flying through the air. They had no parachute to slow them down. A land craft was sent to each of their trajectories to find, capture, and bring them back to one of the Spear-Danes’
prisons.
In Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf is shown as a hero with extrodinary strength. This is not what makes him a hero. By definition, a hero is a man of exceptional quality. However this term does not do Beowulf justice. His self-imposed purpose in life is to help others, and eventually sacrifices his own life in doing so. Beowulf’s battle with the dragon serves as a critique of the notion that Beowulf is a hero. The Dragon section displays many of Beowulf’s heoric characteristics. Beowulf establishes himself as a hero by fighting the dragon, exemplifing strength and courage when fighting the dragon, and sacrificing himself so that others can live.
When deciphering between what it considered to be heroic or monstrous, it is important to keep in mind the angle in which a story is being told. While reading Beowulf, the protagonist of the epic poem could be considered either heroic or monstrous through the eyes of different characters. Beowulf can be classified as a hero according to The Hero’s Journey through the eyes of Hrothgar and Hygelac. On the other hand, Beowulf could be viewed as being monstrous according to Monster Theory through the eyes of Unferth and Grendel’s Mother.

To begin, our impeccable Beowulf holds a god-like stance among the people he meets, all of whom seem to know him already, whether it be for previous deeds or otherwise. He was renowned by the Gea...
The character Beowulf, “a man of great strength and bravery” (Magill 388), is a hero in the way he defends his neighboring country, Denmark. When the word that a hostile creature, known as Grendel, was killing tons in Denmark, Beowulf set sail to help defend the people and rid them of the hideous monster.
After the Danish coast-guard meets and talks to Beowulf, the guard then begins his next speech with a brief maxim or aphorism:
An epic is a long narrative poem on a serious subject. It usually is about
The pessimism of the poor Danes was palpable. They had even despaired of appealing to the Christian God and had reverted to offering sacrifice to their heathen idols. Grendel had killed 30 warriors the first night and had taken even more the next night. But their pessimism is dispelled by one Beowulf who is ready and willing to sacrifice himself to repay the debt of Ecgtheow, Beowulf’s father, to Hrothgar. This Geat warrior possesses almost miraculous qualities: “He was the strongest of men a...
In this essay, I will uncover the countless insights that can be learned about the characters in Beowulf, as well as the society as a whole, based on the weapons the characters choose to use in battle. During the Anglo-Saxon time, roughly between 400 and 1066, swords were considered the most precious weapon someone could own. Although it is not certain who wrote Beowulf, and when, many people believe it was composed in the middle to end of the Anglo-Saxon period. Analyzing the different weapons, and significance of each, in Beowulf, and comparing them to the weaponry at the time, provides the readers with a great deal of insight into the society during this period. The use of weapons in Beowulf not only provides the readers with insight into
King Hrothgar once again looks toward Beowulf to take care of another monster. To get ready for this battle Beowulf wears armor and uses the Horting sword which has never lost in battle. Once again Beowulf shows his courage by deciding to go to the bottom of the monster filled swamp and fight alone. Fighting off monsters on his way down, Beowulf reached the bottom where he was met by Grendel 's mother. He tried to cut her head off with Horting, but she is too strong. Beowulf takes a sword made for giants off the wall, and uses his super strength to cut the mother 's head off. As a trophy of this battle Beowulf finds the body of Grendel in a corner and decides to take his head back to the mead hall. Hrothgar celebrates another victory by once again throwing a large celebration where they gave more gifts to Beowulf and the Geats. After two battles, Beowulf decides it is time for him and his men to head back to their homeland. Continuing to show courage, honor, and strength Beowulf states that if the Danes ever have anymore problems with monsters he will help protect
"So,” begins poem. “The Spear-Danes in days gone by/ and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness./ We have heard of those princes’ heroic campaigns” (1-3). What follows is a brief history lesson, the story of “Shield Sheafson, scourge of many tribes,/ a ...
What does it mean to be a hero? Like anything else in this world, the definition of the word hero can be argued. Some may say that a hero can be passive, that is if he or she refrains from doing a certain action it makes them heroic. Others would argue that to be truly heroic the character must never turn tail and always face the obstacle head on even though he or she may die in the process. So is Beowulf a hero? Yes, Beowulf is a great epic hero, but his greatness comes only from his sword and not from his mind.
When Beowulf and his army decided to cross the ocean to help a country in need,
First, he traveled to the Danes to help defeat Grendel for king Hrothgar. Grendel snuck into the mead-hall while Beowulf and his geats were sleeping. Once he reached Beowulf, he began attacking; however, Beowulf was prepared. Once the geats were awaken, they all began attacking, but they noticed something--the swords were not doing any damage to Grendel’s body. Grendel possessed an armor-like coat, making it almost impossible for him to be injured. Of course, however, Beowulf knew what to do. He grabbed hold of Grendel’s shoulder and began pulling. Eventually, Grendel’s arm began detaching from his body. Injured, he went back to the marsh to his hellish-lair to die. This was not only a victory for Hrothgar, but it was for Beowulf, also. Beowulf had destroyed the most murderous beast; the one who destroyed the mead-hall--killed hundreds of men.
