When Benvenuto Cellini was 16 years old he got into a fight which led him to get banished to Siena, Italy. He had to stay in Siena from the years of 1517-1519. He then moved to Rome temporarily. Benvenuto Cellini was prosecuted for fighting in the years 1523 in Florence. Later Cellini was condemned to death, but ecaped to Rome. In Rome he worked for the Bishop of Salamanca, Pope Clement VII, and the Bishop of Sigismondo Chigi.
“I’ll be out of here and away from all you knaves for one time anyway, as not a month will pass before you’ll see whether I’m nobody or a somebody.” The story of Bianco Alfani reflected the nature of 14th century Florentine society where, as Alfani remarked, the election to public office could make or destroy a person. In late 14th century and early 15th century Florence, decreased population and expanding commerce provided a favorable environment for ambitious individuals. The real life examples of Buonaccorso Pitti and Gregorio Dati demonstrated the positive role of ambition in Florence. Pitti, a nobleman had an extremely successful career, partaking in military campaigns, holding public office in Florence and being an ambassador to foreign courts. Gregorio Dati, the grandson of purse venders, engaged in commerce, rising in social standing which culminated with his election to public office. Holding office was a definitive sign of success and recognition in Florence. In contrast was the tale Bianco Alfani, a deemed man unworthy of office. As told by Piero Veneziano, Alfani was the chief jailor in Florence who was duped into believing he had been named captain of the town of Norcia. Alfani publicly made a fool of himself, spending all his money and creating a great fanfare over his supposed appointment. Comparing the lives of Pitti and Dati to the story of Bianco Alfani illustrates how economic and social change in 14th century Florence produced a culture centered on reputation and commerce. It was mainly intended to introduce the meaning of the Bible story to large and mainly illiterate audiences. One of the things that this image can tell us about life in western civilization is how much the artists were focused on translating the bible and trying to understand it without the help of the Catholic Church through art and humanism. La Pietà is one of the richest and best known collections of Della Robbia sculptures at the springtime of the renaissance. The creator of the sculpture is Giovanni Della Robbia; the first and epic of a dynasty of important pottery artists, decorators, potters, and terracotta workers. Della Robbia developed a unique pottery glaze that made his creations much more durable in the outdoors and therefore much suitable for use on the exterior of buildings. This was an extraordinarily formal and refined technique that immediately met with great success, so much so that the Della Robbia family’s work flourished for over one hundred years. It uniquely combines archaeometric and stylistic time-related information about the renaissance age in Western Civilization. The artist was born March 6th, 1475 in the city of Caprese, which is located near Arezzo, Tuscany. His father, Lodovico di Leonardo di Buonarroti di Simoni was mayor of Caprese at the time of his birth, and his mother was Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Siena. His mother got sick not long after his birth and in combination of his father being called back to Florence he was taken under the arms of a foster family in the city of Settignano. The family lived on a stonecutters yard, which is where the sounds and sights of stonecutting were engraved into the mind of Michelanglo leading him to become one of the greatest sculptors in history. According to Marcel Brion, author of Michelangelo, “All day long he heard the sound of the saw biting into the stone, the blows of the mallet, the grinding of the chisel” (7). Although Rome was one of the longest civilizations that had lasted, it had its many ups and downs. Beginning as a republic, it moved around a great amount, figuring out who Rome was in the long run. Rome has a vast history that dealt with a republic, an empire, and many, many conflicts.
One would think that societies that have millions of people, the majority of those who are in the lower class, would have more exposure and records written down about them than any other class for us to analyze. Unfortunately that is not the case. People who had wealth and power normally had the privilege to have records done for them for future societies and people to study and read. Luckily the graffiti in Roman society tells a lot about the political life that the everyday Roman lived by.
Contemptuous Remus immediately crossed the line, and Romulus killed him. Romulus later said he regretted killing his brother, but life goes on. He built his city on the Palatine Hill, and called it Rome. When Romulus founded Rome in 753 BC, he made himself the king. Being a brand new city, it had very few people. Romulus built up the population by allowing anybody who wanted to live there, including criminals who flocked to the city. This caused a shortage of women. To get some, the Romans hosted athletic games and invited their neighbors, the Sabines. While they were at the games, some of the Romans sneaked off and stole the Sabine women (Burrell 14-15). Realizing what had happened, the Sabines prepared their army. Expecting this, the Romans were ready and the two forces lined up preparing to fight. Surprisingly, some of the women ran into the no-man's-land in between the armies. This is what their leader said: We were just daughters a short while ago, now we are both wives and daughters. We did not choose our husbands - they chose us. We want this fighting to stop. If it goes ahead, many will be slain. When our fathers are dead, we shall be orphans, but if our husbands die, we shall be widows. We lose either way. (Burrell, 14-15) Surprisingly, the two armies listened and put down their weapons. Since anyone was allowed to reside, Rome had great diversity in its people. There were three main ethnic groups: the Romans, who were first generation, the Sabines, and the Latins, who Romulus is descended from. The Sabines lived in the mountains east of the Tiber and north of the Latins. Later on, another group of people called the Etruscans started moving in. They were unique in that their language had no relation to any other known language, the only one like that. Romulus established a government with a king, who was imperium, Over all persons and in all causes supreme (Adcock 6). Romulus chose one hundred fathers to form the Senate. These people and their descendants are known as Patricians, from the Latin word pater, meaning father. He divided the people into three tribes, mentioned above, and each tribe was divided into smaller curiae. The succession of kings wasn't hereditary. The previous king appointed someone, and that person had to show the good will of heaven. Once king he had to keep the pax deorum, Latin for peace of the gods.

He passed away at the age of 88 years old on February 18th, 1564. He was one of the most famous Italian Renaissance artist. The legacy of the Romans is extremely important and quite extensive. Many things that form part of everyday life were introduced or improved by the Romans. Over the centuries since the collapse of the Roman Empire, Romans ideas about law, government, literature, art and architecture have influenced many around the world. The Roman influence on architecture is illustrated not only by sports arenas, but also for churches, courthouses, sewers, and many other public works and buildings. Roman law is one of the two great contributors to western law (the other being English Common Law). Roman civil law is the basis for almost all legal systems outside of the US, UK and the Commonwealth (which are more influenced by Common Law) and some parts of the Muslim world (which govern using religious law). The Christian church, although suppressed early on, was nurtured and sponsored by the Roman Empire after the end of the third century AD. Without a Roman Empire to spread it, there likely would never have been any Christianity. Much of Christian thought about how to live your life was also taken from Roman philosophical schools like Stoicism (which originated in Greece but was popular in Rome). The legacy left by the Roman Empire in arts and literature can be seen since its demise up until present day. The Roman sculptures and architectures were greatly influenced by the Greeks and also some effects by the Etruscans. Romans were influenced mostly by Greek art in many ways. It was because the variety of paintings, sculptures, and the different style of early architectures presented in every period of Roman history. They had pasted and copied many art works from the early Greek to build up their empire. Although the Etruscans had contributed and influenced the Roman in some ways such as educated them to build fortifications, bridges, drainage systems, and aqueducts but their underst6anding on both the art and language is still limited to the Greek.
