Zoo captivity is substandard and inadequate for animals. Zoo animals are deprived of their right as animals they are treated unjustly and unfairly.Animals should not be forced to kept in a cage away from their natural environment and be used as a form of entertainment to humans. The animals also suffer from stress and are driven insane by being trapped behind bars. The zoo is supposed to provide safety to these endangered animals but instead, these zoo animals are put at risk towards a variety of dangers such as vulnerability to diseases and starvation. Zoo cavity is harmful for animals, they are used for entertainment purposes.

Zoo birds cages do not offer freedom to interact with their same species. Some animals develop neurotic behavior because they are being trapped in theses small closed spaces when compared to the vast ground and land in their natural environment. This condition is known as zoochosis, it occurs when the animals have become so lonely and unhappy from everything being deprived away from their natural habitat. Symptoms of zoochosis in animals are when animals are rocking, swaying back and forth and in some cases animals abusing themselves and eating their own limbs are an result from this condition. A polar bear named Gus at the Central park Zoo had to live in an enclose that was 0.00009 percent of the size of his natural environment/ habitat ( Smith 1). They have no control over their own life everything is controlled by the zoo. What their next meal is going to be, who they mate with, where they live. Why should animals have this chosen for them? Humans are given freedom and equality shouldn't animals be given this right as well? Zoos educate the public by showing them the different animals, how they act, how dangerous they are, and how to treat them according to the article “Education – Association of Zoos and Aquariums.” Zoos are an important part of education because without a public zoo some might not know how dangerous some animals are and get killed by them or even unknowingly kill an endangered species. Also without zoos the education on animals study would lack curiosity because of a poor presentation of examples. Children need to see to believe and without that aspect the education towards animals would suffer tremendously. A total of 175 million people have been educated because of zoos. They are educated about wild animals, their related conservation issues, their habitats, and the ways in which they can contribute to their preservation of these animals.
There are many places where people can go to see live animals such as aquariums, zoos, and safari parks. A pleasant way to define a Zoo is to call it “an establishment that maintains a collection of wild animals”. I believe zoos are ethical; however, changes need to be made to eliminate problems I have discovered. Larger animals, such as elephants and orcas (commonly known as killer whales), have trouble with being confined in such a small area. However, many smaller animals benefit from zoos because they provide protection from predators, natural disasters, and poachers. They also benefit from conservation efforts; the babies being born get all the care they could ever need. Some animal rights activists are concerned that the conservation efforts are limiting the gene pool of the species. They argue that the small number of animals able to breed in captivity limits biodiversity and leads to weaknesses in the species overall. Zoos are wonderful places to study and learn about animals, but we need to improve the living standards for animals that struggle with captivity.
To begin, zoos are unethical because animals inherit mental issues while in captivity. According to "Play time at the Zoo" by Elizabeth Carney, "Bored animals can be dangerous. They can exhibit self-mutilation, hyper aggressiveness and loss of appetite" (149). This is important because animals execute these behaviors regularly, so the animals can be harmed. Zoos bring human kind closer to wild life. Though, sometimes that means taking the animal out of its natural habitat. Some animals have lost most of their habitat and are on the verge of extinction. In this way, the zoo helps the animals rather than using them as a form of human entertainment. Zoos also allow humans to study different kinds of animals more closely. Some zoos on the other hand manipulate the animals to acquire as much revenue as possible rather than being concerned with the welfare of each animal.
