The Renaissance was a movement that aimed at reviving the culture of classical Greece and

Rome. This movement started in Italy between the 1300s to 1600s mainly because of its geography,

politics, economics, and ethical code. Italy had many advantages that made it the birthplace of the

Renaissance. Italy had cities that were flourishing, a rich merchant class, the classical heritage of Greece

and Rome, and its population grew fast. All of these advantages that Italy had made it the ideal

birthplace for the Renaissance.

The geography of Italy had a huge impact on the beginning of the Renaissance. Italy was

bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea, and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Also there were major

rivers crossing Italy such as the the Tiber River, Po River, and Arno River. These water routes provided

easy access in and out of Italy. This is important because merchants from other countries can trade

items unique to their culture in return for items that they need. Also this provided access for people in
