Self disclosure is the process of intentionally revealing unknown information about yourself that you consider significant. There are three benefits of self disclosure which include Reciprocity, Catharsis, and Self Clarification. Reciprocity is when one’s honesty in making the other feel comfortable or even obligated to match. Catharsis is like getting something out of your chest. Lastly, self-clarification is clarifying our thoughts, attitudes, and/or feelings. Self disclosure is also going into depth or breadth depending on the context. Depth in self- disclosure is giving personal information about yourself. While breadth in self- disclosure refers to one's attitude regarding multitude topics; tends to be surface information. The short film, …show more content…
This connects to Catharsis, Depth is Self- Disclosure, and Self-Clarification because of the way the communicator is getting something out of their mind, and didn’t clarify on their thoughts, attitudes, and/or feelings. For instance, the scene when Everett told Brinn about him wearing an underwear for three days or sometimes four, shows the characteristic of Catharsis and Depth in Self Disclosure because he let out personal information of what he had in mind out of the unexpected. On the first date it isn’t the best to let the other person know a lot about you. Also, you shouldn't say what you are thinking because you feel like it. Saying something too personal, like Evett did, to the other individual you are with, isn’t the best option because they might leave and never want to know about you. It isn’t the best option to use full disclosure because spilling your personal information is not the most convenient to be a competent communicator. You don’t want to spill everything about you when you just met the person because you never know what kind of person they might be. Another reason why full disclosure isn’t a good source to use on a first date is because of self- clarification within the communicator. When you use full disclosure, you mention random topics causing different feelings and attitudes to come out of us without clarifications. For example, in the film when Everett mentions ‘trust’ as one of his icebreakers, he doesn’t clarify his feelings on why it is. This causes Brinn to start crying which then makes Everitt give her hug. He was saying what came to his mind randomly and what he thought would be best for her to know about him, but was doing this without giving an explanation. Meaning, he was specifying why he has just said what he had mentioned. This
McCain starts off his speech by using self-disclosure and describing his time as a young man as a navy liaison, and eventually senator, on the senate and working alongside former vice president Joe Biden. “Joe was already a senator, and I was the navy’s liaison to the Senate. My duties included escorting Senate delegations on overseas trips, and in that capacity, I supervised the disposition of the delegation’s luggage, which could require – now and again – when no one of lower rank was available for the job – that I carry someone worthy’s bag” (McCain 2017). Self-Disclosure is the the speaker telling the audience of their personal experiences and tells the audience why they have the personal convictions that they have. (Hamilton 2017)
The idea of self-discovery surrounds each and every one of us. It can be the understanding of our own abilities and feelings, or simply the acquisition of knowledge that can be applied for greater use. Self-discovery is crucial in determining the path we take in our lives and the choices we make that help us reach the end goal. As a society that is constantly changing and innovating, self-discovery aids in the process of learning and growing to better those around us and our own interests. Self-discovery enables us to pursue the new found interests and impacts the decisions we make in our lives.
In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson the main character Melinda learns many things. Melinda used to be shy but now because of big events and different people she is confident. Because of the rape situation, Melinda was very shy and self-conscious. People like Ivy and Heather helped her to get through it even though they may not have realized. Melinda also began to realize who she is.”There has been some progress in this whole tree project...I've gone through different phases.” (pg. 151) Which her tree project shows She became confident and learned to stand up for herself. As you can see, it is better to express your feelings than to keep it a secret. Even if it’s a secret that’s so hard to show, you will be better off if you are open to the world. If you keep all of your feelings inside then you will end up like Melinda used to be.
What does sense of self-mean? It means what that person sees when they look in a mirror. Whether it is a decent, awful or an indifferent image. Everyone’s self-image is different, and that’s acceptable; normal even. No one person is exactly the same. The authors explain how a sense of self is like internal conflicts and the decision to lie in order to gain approval.
Firstly, Self-disclosure is a process of communication in which an individual reveals information about themselves to someone else. The information may be descriptive or evaluative, which may include thoughts, feelings, aspirations,
First, the therapist's self-disclosure boundary commented Ofer Zur, Ph.D., “Is a therapist's self-disclosure inevitably becomes an unhealthy social relationship.” In addition, to find out if the therapist’s self-disclosure wa...

"To be self aware is to be conscious of one's character, including beliefs, values, qualities, strengths and limitation. It is about knowing oneself" (Burnard 1992).
One of the cornerstones of sustainable and successful practice within social work is use of self (Dewane, 2006). The social work profession uniquely employs the person of the therapist and his or her experience to create a successful helping relationship and is integral to the experience of seeing a social worker. However, it is also important for professionals to give thoughtful consideration to how they will use and disclose themselves (Henretty, J. R., & Levitt, H. M., 2010). Henretty encourages intentionality in the therapist’s use of self, articulating that nondisclosure cannot be the copout and that intentional ways of self-disclosure must be thought through now. This intentionality that Henretty encourages is effective when therapist
Over a period, more, and more detailed information would be exchanged. The social penetration theory can’t go without the discussion of self-disclosure as it is most important in developing relationships. Self-disclosure is the gradual unfolding of one’s self. It is defined as, “verbally communicating personal information about the self to another person (Forgas 449).” Depending on the stage of the relationship the information can range from thoughts, feelings, goals, fears, dreams, and favorites. Individuals usually maintain protective outer layers that surround a central core that represents the true self. Social Penetration theory suggests that as a relationship becomes increasingly intimate, the self-disclosures become increasingly deep (Tolstedt 85). The first hypothesis which is revealing one 's self can be compared to peeling an onion. Peeling away the layers are similar to revealing more about the self. There are four layers of information that we disclose. The first layer is the surface. In this layer, the information is shallow and usually consist of topics that do not have to be discussed. This type of information is visible information regarding the individual, which can be assessed easily. The second layer is the peripheral layer, where personal information is exchanged. The intermediate layer consists of the exchange of opinions about
The evolution of the Internet started from the department of defense's project, and rapidly distributed to world wide. With the rise of the Internet age comes with the benefits and the concerns. Because of the easeness to communicate information and displaying data, the first amendment needs to be applied to this communication channel. How are we using and communicating information without offending and harm others? Since the evolution of the Internet, there has been acts from Congress to regulate the use the Internet such as the Communications Decency Act in 1996 and the Child Online Protection Act in 1998. These acts aim to forbid Internet users from displaying offensive speech to users or exposing children of indecent materials. The Internet raises other issues that people might have. The biggest and most debatable topic is the privacy issue. Is the Internet a safe place to protect personal information such as financial information, medical data, etc…? Some people who are computer literate or at least with some experience in software and technology would not trust to release the information on the web or at random sites . As a matter of fact, any unknown or small vendor on the web would have difficulty getting many customers to do business online. Big vendors such as Amazon would want to secure their network infrastructure to protect the users information, so that their server would not be hacked. However, even this style of protecting personal information is not enough. The users demand further protection such as ensuring their information is not being sold to other vendors for misuse, or spam the users mailbox with soliticing.
I’m an alcoholic and sober today thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous. Our Fellowship is called Alcoholics Anonymous that is who we are, we are alcoholics who help each other get and stay sober, one day at a time and we don’t tell anyone who we’ve met at meetings. If I tell someone outside AA that Maggie, who lives next door to them or Tam who’s in a TV programme come to meetings, I’m breaking their anonymity. That’s quite straight forward. What wasn’t clear to me for a while was that if I tell a fellow AA member that I saw someone at a meeting, I’m breaking their anonymity. Just because someone has come to a meeting doesn’t mean they want people they haven’t yet met in AA to know what there’s doing. This is of great importance, especially to the
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
Throughout the movie, we see Michael deal with self-disclosure multiple times. We can use the Johari window has a technique to show Michael’s self-disclosure. For example, Michael does not know he is good at football until he tries out for the team and makes it. This would fall under the unknown category since nobody else knew Michael was good at football. Another instance is when Michael’s protective instincts are revealed in the movie. He protects S.J. from the car crash and Michael learns about his protective quality. This would fall under the unknown category since Michael did not know he could protect S.J. in a car accident and no one else expected him to be able to do so. Michael shows many different cases of hidden self-disclosure. For example, when Leigh Ann first picked up Michael, he tried to hide that he had a place to sleep, even though he did not. He tries to hide it from Leigh Ann, but she quickly picks up on it and offers him a bed to sleep on. Michael later reveals that he has never had a bed before, which is another form of hidden self-disclosure. As Michael and Leigh Ann’s friendship grows, he later shares with Leigh Ann that he does not like being called Big Mike. This would also fall under the hidden area of the Self-Disclosure window. As you can see Michael
“Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behaviour. Alternatively, it can be defined as the realisation of oneself as an individual entity.” (Crisp & Turner, 2010). In other words, self awareness is recognising one’s personality which includes strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs and emotions.
