IMSA is a school that offers a vast amount of opportunities for every student who attends. If I attend IMSA, I will use every resource available to obtain the best education possible, and I will do my best to make an impact on the IMSA learning environment. IMSA offers programs and clubs that do not exist at my school, and also offers challenging classes that I cannot take at my school. I plan to use these invaluable resources to the best of my ability. When I attended Summer@IMSA Summer Integrated Science, some of the material was difficult for me to understand. However, the teachers and tutors were very helpful to me when I was confused. Even other students helped me better understand the coursework. An environment like IMSA's places importance on this kind of collaboration, would greatly advance my learning. Since I will be living in a dorm, even after class, I will be able to get help from other students who may know more about a topic then I do. I will also be able to assist other students in the same way. IMSA also offers many extracurricular activities, which I can be a part of and contribute to. Not only can I join clubs about my interests, such as robotics, I can also be part of clubs that will expand my interests. Some of these clubs are not offered at my current high school. Not only will these clubs help me adjust to IMSA life, but I will also be participating in something I enjoy. I play tennis, and IMSA offers a tennis team. I enjoy writing, so I could be a part of the writing clubs. There are many organizations I can be apart of at IMSA. At IMSA, I believe the possibilities to enhance my education and future are infinite. The challenging curriculum and bright teachers and students both work together to make a positive learning environment. IMSA has a great community, which is one of the main reason I am applying. IMSA has great opportunities to forward an interest in the medical and STEM field, which tend to go hand and hand. Not only do I think that the critical thinking and independent research classes will help benefit me and the peers I will work with, I believe that the extracurricular activities at IMSA are what really makes this school stand out. At the school I currently go to, they prioritize sports over most other extracurriculars, with the highest funded club being the debate and speech teams. Even though these clubs are important in building teamwork and leadership abilities, they are very limited in learning about medical and STEM terms. This is why I believe that the clubs at IMSA such as their science olympiad team will help me learn more about the field that I love. By having peers that will constantly challenge me every day, this will make me strive to become better than them and have something to work for.
As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Therefore, while many are trembling in fear at the prodigious assignments and work is bombarding them from all angles, I will be at ease, knowing that whatever obstacle is thrown my way, I will conquer it and be its own
Why do you want to go to Asmsa? Why leave home for this school? Is it even the right place for you? All of these questions I have heard be asked before, by my parents, my friends, even I ask myself if this is the right choice, but every time I hear it, I have the answer ready. Of course Asmsa is the right place for me, not only is the school I’ve looked forward to going to since the 7th grade, It is the type of school I’ve always needed to put me in the mindset for learning. I want to be in ASB because I think that this is a great opportunity for me to practice my leadership skills to help all students at Medea Creek. I enjoy helping people and working with others and I know that ASB is a wonderful chance for me to do so. I know that our school should have voices that help others who cannot speak up for themselves and I will help them raise their voices in school. With an unchallenging curriculum students skipped or simply slept during class. The school was a difficult environment to learn and I soon found myself getting into fights and trouble which led to my suspension. That momentous event was my turning point, I was hurting my parents and crushing their high hopes. I developed into a reckless person that had forgotten my goals. Being one suspension away from expulsion, I distance myself from my group of friends to evade trouble and focused on my studies. I was tired of the constant paranoia I felt going to school and the weak learning curriculum so after my sophomore year, I finally convinced my parents to transfer me to University High School (UHS). I want to keep myself busy and challenge myself, and I knew that I was just buying time from getting suspended again. Cliffside Park High School has offered me numerous opportunities. I took honors courses in English, mathematics, and science ever year. In addition, I have taken three years of Spanish as a third language and an advanced placement class for U.S. history. Throughout the past couple years; I have been able to sustain a high grade point average of about a 4.4 (based on calculations made at the end of sophomore year) and make High Honor Roll for almost every marking period. In an essay by Harley Tong, high school is portrayed as “a waste of time and a struggle to remain interested in schoolwork.” He continues to describe his own experiences and how they led him to begin his college career two years earlier than most students. He complains of the way that he was physically and verbally abused by other students, which is the case in many high schools. High school is not only a cognitive learning environment; it is also a social learning environment. Students learn how to communicate with fellow pupils, teachers and administrators. They find out how to come independent from their parents and how to prepare for the rest of their lives. I believe that Harley Tong was simply too advanced for his surroundings. He most likely found the other students immature and didn’t fit in with them. In his case, he found a solution to attend a community college instead of his high school, which I commend him for. Many students in his situation would simply drop out, and that is not the answer.

My academy experience to date has made me aware of issues in higher education that I want to explore further. Ultimately my goal is to better understand the critical issues in higher education and be able to influence change for the betterment of the academy as well as the students who are and will be participating in it.
One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
As a student in this modern society, I have seen firsthand that children are not respected for their way of learning; this thought gets lost in the midst of longing for uttermost perfection. The growth of the student is hindered by the realization that their value as a person comes from knowing what other people chose for them to know. Society often takes away the passion of a person when they start placing their own standards for people to live off of; often forcing them to become a shadow of their former self. Like Auden says in his “Letter to Lord Byron”, “[there is no need] to straighten out the kinks in the young mind,” because learning is part of the process and learning to fail, and accepting that failure is a lesson within itself. The human mind is too quick to jump to the results compared to taking their time to truly recognize that these mistakes are what makes a human successful in the future. Being unique and similar at the same time is like being a puzzle piece, all pieces are needed to make the picture, but each picture has its own purpose. Just like the puzzle pieces, people have their own jobs to fulfill, and they might not fit everywhere but they fit somewhere. Living up to my resolution, I joined several clubs, both in and out of school and academic and recreational. I also met some of my very best friends in high school. Achieving all of this, friends, memberships to academic clubs and good grades, made up my first successful experience in high school. I was driven by the years in middle school and the promise that I made to myself at the end of eighth grade. Throughout my under classmen years I exceled in all subjects and thoroughly enjoyed the clubs I had joined. I think my downfall for the last two years of school was that I took for granted my good grades and as my classes got more rigorous I didn’t change the way I learned the material, but continued on the same path that I had been following my entire academic career, even when my grades were slipping slightly. Halfway through my senior year, I realized I needed to change the way I was learning the curriculum my instructors were teaching. I’ve always been the type of student to take good notes or listen to a lecture and understand everything the first time around, as was the case in elementary school and middle school. But my more rigorous classes proved to be a challenge for me and I did not know the proper way of learning the material on my own.
